What is cyber-bullying?
Cyber-bullying occurs when the victim is tormented, harassed or embarrassed using the internet, or other technology
Sometimes, it is so severe that it includes threatening behavior

Why does this matter? About 33% of teens are victims of
cyber-bullying
66% of teens have reported when they saw the harassment online, others joined in
Over 14% of high school aged people have considered suicide and being bullied makes contemplation of suicide 2 to 9 times more likely

What causes cyber-bullying?
To show off to friends
For fun/entertainment
Revenge
To harm someone they dislike
To embarrass others
What are the effects?
Continuous bullying, even at home
Suicides among young people
Depression among young people
Also effects the bully themselves: cyber bullies spend much more than the average amount of time online and become addicted to these unhealthy behaviors

Affects mostly middle school and high school teens
Highest among 7th and 8th graders

Technology’s Role
Social Networking sites make cyber-bullying easier and more prevalent, as do mobile devices
However, technology has also played a role in combating cyber-bullying

Who can improve the situation? Schools can hold anti-bullying events
in which they discourage online bullying
Parents can restrict internet usage and ensure their children are neither bullies nor victims.
Teens can discourage online bullying by standing up for victims, etc.
Lawmakers can make online threats a serious offense
