What is information technology

Page 5: Social Impact on Information Technology For

Information technology (IT) is concerned with technology to treat information. The acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications are its main fields.[1] The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Leavitt and Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT).". Some of the modern and emerging fields of Information technology are next generation web technologies, bioinformatics, cloud computing, global information systems, large scale knowledgebases, etc. Advancements are mainly driven in the field of computer science.

Information

The English word was apparently derived from the Latin stem (information-) of the nominative (informatio): this noun is in its turn derived from the verb "informare" (to inform) in the sense of "to give form to the mind", "to discipline", "instruct", "teach".

Raw data is given structure and then is called information. Understanding this information is then called knowledge, which leads to an information ladder.

Technology

IT is the area of managing technology and spans wide variety of areas.

IT professionals perform a variety of functions (IT Disciplines/Competencies) that ranges from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as management and administration of entire systems. Information technology is starting to spread further than the conventional personal computer and network technologies, and more into integrations of other technologies such as the use of cell phones, televisions, automobiles, and more, which is increasing the demand for such jobs.

In the recent past, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery have collaborated to form accreditation and curriculum standards for degrees in Information Technology as a distinct field of study as compared to Computer Science and Information Systems today.

IntroductionBangladesh is now sailing before a strong, favourable wind into the century of the information

society. Governments and politicians need to realize that it is timely to formulate a vision of thefuture of this journey. This article has two key words: guidance and vigilance. Guidance refers to the Government's(policy makers) role in guiding information technology along a path and facilitating its headwayinto as many fields as possible for the benefit of Bangladesh. Vigilance refers to the furthernecessity of the Government's standing guard over cultural and ethical values, such asBangladesh’s people's identity and the protection of sensitive, personal information, which somefear will be swept away in the flood of change.Although at first glance it may seem that these two key words would be antithetical, they in factturn around the same axis. This axis concerns the chief objective of the vision of the future thatBangladesh be in the forefront of the nations of the world in utilising information technology inthe service of improved living conditions and prosperityThe challenge Bangladesh faces is how to become a learning society and to ensure that its citizens are equipped with the knowledge, skills and qualifications on information and technology (IT) they will need in the next century. IT revolution imposes particular challenges on education systems in Bangladesh. These challenges reduce to three broad areas. The first has to do with participation in the information society, the second considers how IT impacts on access, cost effectiveness and quality of education, while the third is to do with the way that IT changes the education process. However, IT is contributing to ever-increasing inequalities in Bangladesh through the so-called “digital divide” that splits the Bangladesh between those who are “IT-literate” and the majority who are not and most of the women have no access to a computer and the Internet. A series of factors, including literacy and education, language, time, cost, geographical location of facilities, social and cultural norms, and women's computer and information search and dissemination skills constrain women's access to information technology. Dhaka Ahsania Mission is playing a vital role to provide computer and Internet facility in the rural areas shorten “digital divide” and create opportunities for addressing and eliminating poverty and hunger through education and technological intervention. According to this mission and vision, Dhaka Ahsania Mission has established Ahsanullah Institute of Information and Communication Technology (AIICT), Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology (AUST), Institute of Literacy and Adult Education (ILAE), Non-Formal Basic Education, Continuing Education Program, IT Ganokendra (a community learning center that has access to the computer and internet) etc. Dhaka Ahsania Mission is trying to establish a relationship between Ganokendra and Bangladesh Open University (a governmental institution for distance education) so that poor rural people get distance and adult education. However, it needs to be realised that information and communication technologies by itself cannot be an answer and elixir to all problems facing Bangladesh but it does bring new information resources and can open new communication channels for the rural communities. It offers new approaches for bridging the information gaps through interaction and dialogue, building new alliances, inter-personal networks, and cross-sectoral links between organizations. The benefits include increased efficiency in allocation of resources for development work, less

duplication of activities, reduced communication costs and global access to information and human resources.

Main objectivesThe chief objective of our vision of the future is: Bangladesh shall be in the forefront of theworld's nations in the utilization of information technology in the service of improved humanexistence and increased prosperity. In following up this chief objective, five main objectives can be identified as a foundation for avision of the future:1. Bangladeshi shall have easy access to the information society. Its advantages will beutilised to strengthen democracy and increase the quality of life for the benefit of the publicand the Bangladesh economy. Information technology will be employed in all fields, whetherfor innovation, public health, science, the arts or other fields of daily life.2. Complete equality shall be ensured between the public and private sectors in the field ofinformation technology and the information industry. The Government, with the help ofinformation technology, will facilitate access to governmental information and services tolevel the status of individuals and companies without regard to residence and economicresources.3. Information and telecommunications technologies shall be mobilized to improve thecompetitiveness of the Bangladesh economy, increase productivity and proliferate thepossibilities of exporting Bangladeshi inventiveness.4. The educational system shall adapt to change social dynamics and focus generaleducation and continuing education upon the advantages of the information societywhile, at the same time, keeping watch over our language and culture.5. Legislation, rules and working methods shall be re-examined with respect to informationtechnology to stimulate technological progress and to protect the rights of individuals andcompanies.

Education, Research, Culture

Page 8: Social Impact on Information Technology For

The educational system should adapt to the changed dynamics of society and prepare students forjobs that will continuously demand the gathering of new knowledge. Also the advantages ofinformation technology should be utilized to reinforce and maintain language and culture.Research and development in the field of information technology and the information industryshould be supported at the same time as the technology itself is used to stimulate research anddevelopment in other fields.Educational institutions have the important mission of preparing students for life and work in thesociety of the future. Education is, in fact, the foundation upon which development and progressrest. In the information society education will not be contingent upon residence and time asbefore. By utilizing the advantages of technology, access can be assured for all countrymen toinformation and knowledge. One of the roles of educational and cultural institutions is workingtoward making this a reality.Changing Mode of EducationEducation will change greatly in the next years, with many aspects of it changingsimultaneously. Specialized education will become obsolete sooner and educational requirementswill increase. The current emphasis on schooling being tied to a certain time of life will decrease.Continual education will acquire the same value as a traditional academic curriculum. "Reading"pictures, or the knowledge of the "grammar of graphics", which is the backbone ofcommunicating information with pictures, must therefore become a part of education. In addition, information technology creates new dimensions in Bangladeshi cultural life andmultiplies the ways that the arts are communicated. It can be utilised to bolster the presentationof cultural activities and the creation of art greatly and to facilitate coming into contact with thevalues provided us by our cultural life.

Some Ways of Implementing• All Bangladeshis should have access to primary and secondary education as well as continualeducation and training in applying information technology for their own benefit in life andwork.• In re-examining curricula at all levels of schooling, emphasis should be placed on thedevelopment of all subjects in accordance with the possibilities offered by informationtechnology. An important aspect in this process is good knowledge of the mother tongue andother languages. In the international arena, a thorough knowledge of English is especiallyimportant.• The importance of the country's schools' having adequate computer equipment should bestressed, as well as support services, so that students and employees can utilize the potentialof information technology in studies, teaching, research, management and domestic and

Page 9: Social Impact on Information Technology For

international communications. Means for handicapped people to utilize informationtechnology for participation in regular schooling should be specially considered.• The operations of the Educational Network must be robust. Among other things, there shouldbe information about Bangladesh educational institutions, data banks and educationalprojects, distance learning, continual education and other offerings linked to education in thiscountry. Access to the Internet and other comparable networks for schooling should beavailable in all the country's educational institutions.• Stress should be placed on continual education and self-instruction, which make it possibleand normal for all to renew and adapt their knowledge to new circumstances, move betweenjobs or create new ones. Facilities, information and educational materials must be obtainedfor those involved in continual education and self-instruction; and data banks should be setup to service distance learning and electronic communications.• Educational institutions for teachers on all levels of the school system should organize andconduct multifaceted and carefully crafted basic and continuing education courses on theutilization of information technology in various subjects for teachers, school managers andother employees.• It should be possible to take diverse, special courses in the field of information technology atthe secondary and university levels. University-level institutions should be encouraged tocontinue to prepare and offer such special courses.• It is important to support and strengthen research on the use of information technology inschooling and its impact on education. Purposeful attempts should be made to useinformation technology at all levels of schooling.• Research and development in the field of information technology and information affairsshould be intensified.• The community of science, that is, the community of those doing scientific work, shouldutilize information technology in the most efficient manner to strengthen their work.• Information technology should be utilized to preserve cultural values as well as to teach andpresent Bangladeshi culture, artists' activities and works in this country and abroad.

Undergraduate and post-graduate levels At the moment Bangladesh has more than 8 public and 50 private universities, 4 BITs and some national university-affiliated post-graduate institutes and colleges, which are offering courses related to computer science and information technology. Bangladesh Open University is the only university in Bangladesh that is offering Distance Education. Established in 1992 by an act of Parliament, it has opened up new vistas in distance education in the country. Situated at a picturesque site of Gazipur, 30 km north of Dhaka, BOU has a printing and production division and a modern media centre. Construction of these organisational structures is almost complete, with financial assistance from ADB and the government of Bangladesh. BOU`s programmes are aimed at everyone, particularly working people and women and those socially disadvantaged. Bangladesh Open University relies heavily on print materials, electronic media like radio-television and audio-video cassettes, tutorial services, computer networking and the internet. The use of these techniques helps BOU to take its academic programs to the doorsteps of people far and wide. It makes room for in-house education. Some other institutions have also initiated research programmes in IT-related fields. These include machine learning, pattern recognition, speech recognition, automatic translation, computational algorithm, VLSI and 3-D vision. Considerable research work has been done in the use of Bengali in computers. Unfortunately, like R&D in other fields of science and technology, there is very little interaction between academia and industry.

Social network

A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.

Social network analysis (SNA) views social relationships in terms of network theory consisting of nodes and ties (also called edges, links, or connections). Nodes are the individual actors within the networks, and ties are the relationships between the actors. The resulting graph-based structures are often very complex. There can be many kinds of ties between the nodes. Research in a number of academic fields has shown that social networks operate on many levels, from families up to the level of nations, and play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals.

In its simplest form, a social network is a map of specifiedties, such as friendship, between the nodes being studied. The nodes to which an individual is thus connected are the social contacts of that individual. The network can also be used to measure social capital – the value that an individual gets from the social network. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines.

E-learning

E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. The information and communication systems, whether networked learning or not, serve as specific media to implement the learning process. The term will still most likely be utilized to reference out-of-classroom and in-classroom educational experiences via technology, even as advances continue in regard to devices and curriculum.

E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual education opportunities and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

Abbreviations like CBT (Computer-Based Training), IBT (Internet-Based Training) or WBT (Web-Based Training) have been used as synonyms to e-learning. Today one can still find these terms being used, along with variations of e-learning such as elearning, Elearning, and eLearning. The terms will be utilized throughout this article to indicate their validity under the broader terminology of E-learning.

Web search engine

A web search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web and FTP servers. The search results are generally presented in a list of results often referred to as SERPS, or "search engine results pages". The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Unlike web directories, which are maintained only by human editors, search engines also maintain real-time information by running an algorithm on a web crawler.

GOOGLE, YAHOO, BING ,AOL and many more.
