How my magazine representsparticular social groups

Page 2: Social groups presentation

My magazine presents teenagers and young adults, and within that, mainly indie, pop/acoustic singers. Some who are already popular and successful, and some fairly unknown and new artists.

My main cover image is of an artist that is up and coming with a debut album that people may have heard about , the magazine presents her to the world in a positive light to help her gain recognition.

Contents page

I have kept my contents page fairly simple with not too much going on and sticking to a colour theme of black and dark red. This keeps the laid back mood and genre of the magazine, so it doesn’t look to busy and packed.

I have added a prop to the outfit on the model, a beanie hat from ‘Monroe Apparel’ clothing which not only links to the title of the magazine, but represents indie groups by using clothing from fashion ranges typically associated with them.

Article

I have included the word ‘Indie’ in the heading of the article, which clearly lets the reader know the genre of music the artist sings.

The language and tone of the interview is very informal and chatty, making them seem positive and friendly.

In the interview, the artist tells the magazine interviewer some of her musical influences, including many indie, acoustic, folk singers, to present those social groups in a positive light as they have influenced a successful and popular artist.

I’ve included photos of different outfits and styles associated with social groups that aren’t typical or boring, they look very different and indie.

The magazine cover lines feature Lewis Watson, who is a young acoustic singer from Oxford who started by covering songs on Youtube then released an album on the itunes charts.

Many people may not have heard of him so this represents young, fresh, new social groups who want to find out about the newest, most exclusive artists.

The magazine also features well known, popular artists that reflect the mood and genre of the magazine, such as Marina & The Diamonds, The Killers, Ed Sheeran, Mumford & Sons and many more, which represent different musical styles and both males and females.

As the main model used in the magazine is female and the article features an interview with her, the magazine may attract girls first. But as you look at the genre of the magazine, some of the artists and other features on the contents page, there are a lot that boys will enjoy too.

The general language and tone of the magazine I would not make gender biased so both girls and boys can enjoy the magazine.

The social groups represented are mainly 16-24 year olds who are comfortable with their identity, enjoy ‘different’ styles of music and fashion, and enjoy going to gigs and festivals featuring artists and bands of those styles and genres.
