Studies in European Urban History (1100–1800)

Series editors: Marc Boone, Anne-Laure Van Bruaene

By focusing on the growing importance of the city in the history of Europe, the essays in this series explore di erent urban communities in time and space and address a wide range of topics: the interconnections and interdependencies between city and countryside, governance of behav-iour, civic identity or the socioeconomic and cultural practices of the city dweller from medieval towns to the modern metropolis.

Rural economy and society in north-western Europe, 500–2000

Series editor: Erik oen

In these volumes an international team of more than 60 well-known researchers aims to explain how rural societies around the North Sea coped with the enormous social changes between the sixth and the twenty- rst centuries. ese publications investigate the relationship between economic growth and ecological constraints, between markets and income structures as well as between lords, governments and peasants. Each book opens with a general chapter on the period 500–1000 and is further subdivided into two periods, 1000–1750 and 1750–2000, and ve regional subchapters (Northern France, the British Isles, the Low Countries, Northern Germany and Scandinavia). e books conclude with a comparative synthesis.

Rural History in Europe

Series editor: Gérard Béaur

Promoting understanding of the rural landscapes of today in the light of historical experience: such is the ambition of this collection devoted to European rural history. Rural environments have  seen many other changes over previous centuries, and their history is rich in lessons if we seek to understand the ways that have been travelled, the issues that lie ahead, and the reality of a complex world.
