3WELCOME

Welcome to SOCAP: DESIgNINg THE FUTURE, a time when we gather together to look at where the market at the intersection of money and meaning has come from, where it is now, and where it’s going next.

This is a high concept SOCAP; we’re looking beyond the

immediate present at complex, systemic issues that we can only

influence by learning to work together toward a shared future.

That’s why we wanted to hold SOCAP: Designing the Future

in Sweden. This is a place where, once people realize what the

problems are, they naturally set forth working together to solve

them. We are grateful to Malmö University and the city of Malmö,

as well as Region Skåne and its partner group Business Region

Skåne for being our partners in this first ever Nordic SOCAP.

Impact investing − investing your money for a blend of financial

as well as social and environmental value − has become a

global phenomenon, a unique mix of an asset class that still

retains elements of being a movement for change in the world.

Impact investing invests in social enterprises: businesses

that are created to be financially sustainable and to return

capital to investors while they solve a social or environmental

problem. For-profit social enterprises range from businesses

creating jobs and hope in immigrant neighborhoods in Europe,

to companies installing solar panels in Sub-Saharan African

villages that simultaneously cut energy costs by 30% and

remove deadly kerosene fumes from the home.

Impact investing looks at success as blended value returns:

some value shows up on the balance sheet, some shows up in

clean water in a community, or in the fact that an eight-year-

old can safely walk two blocks to an ice cream truck in her

neighborhood. Blended value encompasses those things you

would gladly give to, that you would pay for, and that you would

invest your hopes and your money in. It’s the market at the

intersection of money and meaning; letting investors put their

money where their meaning is, and receive a return for doing it.

The market does not solve every problem, but it can solve

many problems better than either giving or public funding

alone. Blended value investing − investing for positive impact

along with financial return − does not replace philanthropy,

or government and publicly-funded efforts to address social

and environmental problems. Instead, it reduces their cost and

increases their reach and scale.

WELCOMEImpact Investing:

an asset class meets a movement

4 SOCAP: DESIGNING THE FUTURE CONFERENCE GUIDE 5WELCOME

It has become clear, as our global problems become more

complex and interconnected, that neither public-funding nor

philanthropy alone is sufficient to meet the problems we face:

from climate change, to immigration and inclusion, to youth

unemployment that is reaching 25% and more in some places

in Europe.

As we gather together investors and entrepreneurs from around

the world for SOCAP: Designing the Future, we are exploring

how we can bring all our resources to bear, within the limits

of planetary boundaries that put limits on unending growth,

to begin to sketch out the collaborative, inclusive, financially-

sustainable future we need in order to actualize the world we

want for our children and grandchildren. Join us as we design

the future.

KEVIN JONES

Convener

Things are changing. More and more investors are looking for

an extra dimension to their investments. And on a global front

we can see how industry, investors, decision-makers, and social

entrepreneurs are beginning to work together to develop new

types of companies from which we can all benefit.

Sweden in general − and particularly Skåne and Malmö − is

now well on the way to establishing itself as a development hub

for social entrepreneurship in Europe.

It therefore gives us great pleasure to host SOCAP: Designing

the Future here in Malmö, bringing with it a fantastic opportunity

for our region. The conference will put a new development

field on the map, not only in Sweden, but also in Scandinavia

and large parts of Europe. The conference will provide the

opportunity to attract new capital, which can be linked with

ideas and social entrepreneurs from all over Europe, parts of

the USA, and the rest of the world. The realization of SOCAP:

Designing the Future is an important part of the process to

broaden the concept of innovation in Sweden, and makes an

important contribution to Sweden’s advancement as one of the

leading operators in Europe with regard to social innovation as

a growth area.

Malmö University, Region Skåne, and the City of Malmö have

actively participated in SOCAP conferences in both San

Francisco and Amsterdam, and have formed a close relationship

with the SOCAP team in San Francisco. The founders of

SOCAP − Kevin Jones and Rosa Lee Harden − have visited

Sweden and Scandinavia on a number of occasions. They

have thus discovered that Sweden possesses a vast depth

of knowledge and a great interest with regards to both the

interaction between sectors and getting social entrepreneurs

involved in the work of development and growth – all with the

aim of finding new solutions to societal challenges.

WELCOME FROM OUR SWEDISH PARTNERS /

social entrepreneurs from the Nordic countries. According to

Tillväxtverket, social innovation and social entrepreneurship

is necessary if we want to achieve a sustainable society.

That is why Tillväxtverket considers social innovation to be

of high priority, and considers SOCAP: Designing the Future

an important event for promoting new ways of solving global

challenges and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to meet

investors.

1110 SOCAP: DESIGNING THE FUTURE CONFERENCE GUIDE CONNECTIONS

Effectively looking at the future takes connecting to those

who can help you build towards it right now. SOCAP provides

meaningful ways to connect with other participants and those

beyond the walls of the conference. Helpful volunteers, the

Pop-Up Hub, Hub-Create Sessions, the Sustainable Solutions

Video Tour, Landscape Cartoons, and a special trip offering to

Northern Sweden are just some of the ways we do that.

vOLUNTEERS /SOCAP: Designing the Future welcomes more than 40

volunteers who will act as your guides to the gathering. These

individuals are not your average volunteers. Inquisitive students

(many studying right here at Malmö University or nearby Lund

University), career changers, inspiring entrepreneurs, and

knowledgeable social enterprise staff — these individuals are

people you’ll come in contact with, or maybe even collaborate

with, for years after the conference is over.

Spot them with their orange t-shirts and feel free to ask them

logistical or schedule questions. They’ll be happy to help!

POP-UP HUB / Presented by Hub Stockholm / www.the-hub.net

The Pop-Up Hub is the place where ideas come

to life at SOCAP. We’ve created a physical

representation of the expansive global Hub

network. The Pop-Up Hub is a workspace with

interactive offerings that help you connect with other attendees

and members of the Hub around the world. Each table

represents a different city that has its own Hub. Writing your

email in the Pop-Up Hub will connect you with the Hub of your

choice: Mumbai, Zurich, San Francisco, and beyond!

HUb-CreAte SeSSiOnS

For the first time, SOCAP has incorporated a new approach

towards participant-driven content. “Hub-Create Sessions” will

run concurrently with regular sessions. Facilitated by the Hub

Network, Hub-Create Sessions are highly-curated sessions

that pick from the most pertinent and compelling topics

proposed by attendees prior to and during the conference.

Together we’ll discuss what matters NOW for the FUTURE.

WhEN / Join the Hub-Create introduction at 10:00 on Tuesday,

May 9th in the main hall. You’ll be able to propose topics on

paper and online. Hub Facilitators will then group and select

their visions for a sustainable world, and later showcase these

films. Other participants can vote for the contribution they like

the most.

“SpEED DATiNg” NETWorkiNg SESSioNS / These sessions

will bring groups of people to the Pop-Up Hub and guide them

through 2-minute meetings with a set topic like “What is the

best social innovation in recent years?”

The Pop-Up Hub, Hub-Create

and the Sustainable Solutions

Tour are brought to you by Hub

Stockholm.

The Hub is a local and global habitat for social innovators to

collaborate, access market opportunities and capital, build

community, scale ideas, and connect with a global network

of more than 4,000 Hub members. Up to 25 Hub founders

will be represented at SOCAP: Designing the future.

CARTOONISTS /

Throughout the conference, look for Malmö-based cartoonists

– as well as Global Social Strategist, Visual Practitioner, and

the sessions to be held during break-outs starting Tuesday

at 13:00.

WhErE To folloW / Sessions will be posted at 12:00 on

Tuesday, May 9th on a board in the main hall and in the Pop-

Up Hub. In addition, the Hub-Create session schedule will be

available in our online schedule at the SOCAPconnect.com

platform. Two sessions will be held during each Hub-Create

break-out: one in the Pop-Up Hub and one in the main eating area.

WhAT / Sessions can be of relevant topics relating to impact

investing, social enterprise, and biosphere economies. They

can be discussions of trends in disciplines like business

development, marketing, legal issues, fundraising, or can be

a conversation of ideas, movement creation, or ecosystem

building. These sessions are a time to put ideas to action and

address the most relevant topics that matter right now.

We are aware that problems like global warming,

starvation, and threats to human rights do exist.

And the world is asking for solutions. The question

is not so often whether or why we should act for

a more sustainable development, rather it is more often how we

can accomplish change.

Roaming around the space, you’ll see a vibrant team of

videographers interviewing conference participants. Their

videos will be showing in the Pop-Up Hub. These videographers

are leading the Sustainable Solutions Tour — a journey

around European cities with a simple mission: to find the

most innovative examples of sustainable solutions to social

and environmental challenges, and to share their stories

Throughout Europe, public funding is drying up. At the same

time, the need for social services is growing. How do we keep

society functioning in this new climate? New kinds of public-

private partnerships are arising, using innovative new models

of social enterprise and impact investment to fill the gap. The

UK has experienced a precipitous decline in public funding and

has created more new innovations than anywhere in Europe –

from the Big Society Bank (potentially Europe’s largest social

investment vehicle) to Social Impact Bonds – that change the

rules for success and failure in problem neighborhoods. We will

examine these new, promising, and replicable innovations and

experiments.

SCALINg SOCIAL ENTERPRISES /Getting to the future we want

requires social enterprise to

grow fast enough and large

enough to meet the challenges

of the future; to scale at the

pace of the world’s problems.

We’ll explore new models for

funding, hear stories from the

field from entrepreneurs and

investors, and share tools for increasing impact and consumer

demand. We’ll focus on the emergence of the blended value

economy, where you invest, give, and share to create value:

some value shows up on the balance sheet, some shows up as

a safe neighborhood, and some as clean air and water.

PUBLIC-PRIvATE PARTNERSHIPS /The following are the core session themes that will be covered

at SOCAP: Designing the Future:

INCLUSION /What are the best, creative,

market-based solutions to

the complex, interconnected

issues of youth unemployment,

immigrant inclusion, and

providing for the needs of a

growing aging population? A

new kind of investment fund is

teaching skills, creating jobs,

and funding new enterprises for

youth and immigrants. We bring together leading private and

public sector actors from around the world with new innovators

from the United States and across Europe to share ways to

improve individual lives, boost the economy, and ensure the

stability of social welfare systems.

BIOSPHERE ECONOMy /The economy of the future will

have to work for both people

and the planet, dissolving siloed

approaches that focus only

on the planet or only on social

problems. Investing within

planetary growth boundaries

is complex and calls for new,

multidisciplinary partnerships

that break down traditional

barriers between environmentalists and socially-focused impact

investors. We bring together valuable strangers – from young

world-changing entrepreneurs, to experienced investors, and

world-renowned scientists from the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

We are starting to work together using investment to solve both

social and ecological problems within a holistic framework,

as funders focused on species extinction learn to partner with

investors focused on market-based solutions to poverty.
