Two weeks ago I went to Semarang to attend my cousin's wedding. I was there for four days. Iwas involved in the preparation of the wedding ceremony. Like other Javanese weddingceremonies it has several complicated traditional rituals.

The first ceremony was Siraman (bathing ceremony). Siraman means take a bath. The siramanceremony was organized in the afternoon. I was also involved in preparing the place and thestuff needed. After the siraman, the bride was led to the wedding room. She was dressed with atraditional woman's blouse and batik clothes. Make-up was put on her by a traditioanl make-upwoman who led the whole ceremony. The bride looked very beautiful.

The second ceremony was Midodareni (ceremony on the eve before the wedding). The bridehad to stay in the room from 6 p.m to midnight accompanied by some elder woman giving heruseful advice. My other cousins and I also visited her for a while.

The next ceremony was Peningsetan or Srah srahan (traditional engagement ceremony). Thefamily of the would bride visited the parents and the family of the would be groom. They werebringing some gifts. After this ceremony, I helped the women in the backyard. We packed thesnacks for the party in the morning.

In the following morning, Ijab ceremony (religious marriage consecration) was held. I sat rightbehind the bride. I really did not want to miss this moment because it is the most importantphase in the wedding. After ijab, there were some Javanese ceremonies following the wedding

celebration. They were Panggih, Balangan suruh, Wiji dadi, Sindur binayang, Timbang, Tanem,Tukar, Kalpika, Kacar, Kucur, Dahar Klimah, Sungkeman and Mertui ceremonies.

After the wedding rituals, the reception followed. The newly wed couple received blessing andgreetings from the guests. The newly wed couple looked very happy, although they couldn'thide their tired faces.

I went back home in the evening by the last train. I went happily because I could attend mycousin's wedding even helped the preparation.

Ingredients 200 g peanut, peeled and fried (or you can use peanut butter)

Spice Paste - 2 cloves of garlic- 2 red chillies, seeded and fried- 5 eye’s bird chillies, seeded and fried (you can add more if you wish to) - 5 cm kencur (also known as kaempferia galangal), peel off the skin- 1 tablespoon dried prawn paste (terasi )

- 7 kaffir lime leafs- 2 tablespoon tamarind mixed and squeeze with 100 ml lukewarm water and drain.- 50 g palm sugar or more if you like more sweet taste- 1 tsp sugar

Additional Ingredients- 100 g bean sprouts, cleaned- 100 g spinach, cut- 100 cabbage, shredded

Directions 1. Fry garlic and the chillies. Set aside. And then grind or blend together with the rest of

ingredients of spice paste. Add the fried peanut. Continue blending to make it smooth.2. Add some of warm water to make the sauce thicken3. Cook all the vegetables. Set aside.4. One night, while they were praying, Buto Ijo a giant with supranatural powers passed theirhouse. He heard they pray. "Don't worry farmers. I can give you a child. They knew they had to keep their promise to Buto Ijo thegiant but they also did not want to lose their beloved daughter. "My daughter, take this bag. Itcan save you from the giant," said father. "What do you mean, Father? I don't understand," saidTimun Mas.Right after that, Buto Ijo came into their house. "Run Timun Mas. Save your life!" said themother. Buto ijo was angry. He knew the farmers wanted to break their promise. He chasedTimun Mas away. Buto Ijo was getting closer and closer. Timun Mas then opened the bag andthrew a handful of salt. It became sea. Buto Ijo had to swim to cross the sea. Later, Timun Masthrew some chilly. It became a jungle with trees. The trees had sharp thorns so they hurt Buto

But Buto Ijo still could escapefrom the field. Then it was the last magic stuff she had in the bag. It was a shrimp paste orterasi . She threw it and became a big swamp. II. Essay!!

Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend Grandpa’s funeral. It was my first time togo to such a ceremony. We gathered there with our kin in the ceremony.

Overall, the ceremony was quite elaborate. It took about a week. Several days before theceremony was done, grandpa’s body was kept in a series of houses arranged in a circular rowaround an open field called tongkonan. His corpse was dressed in a fine wearing.

The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we slaughtered the pigs and buffaloes, andthen moved the corpse to face north. In this ceremony we wore black clothes. After that, the

corpse was placed in a sandal wood coffin. Then, it was brought out of the house and placed onan open platform beneath the granary. Meanwhile, my uncle, my brother, and I prepared thewooden puppet and a funeral tower called lakian. The next phase of the ceremony was held inthis place. The coffin is borne from the house and placed in the lakian. During the day, therewere also buffalo matches. They were great matches. In the night, we were feasting, chanting,and dancing.

On the last day, the grandpa’s coffin were lowered from the funeral tower and brought up tothe mountain side family graveyard. It was followed by great shouting and excitement from therelatives and the guests. Finally, we installed the wooden puppet on a high balcony where otherpuppets representing the members of a whole family were already there.

The funeral ceremonies made my family and me tired. However, we were grateful because itran smoothly.
