city tremendous attention and respect as he was crowned MVP of the NBA and delivered a speech that showed the spirit of our great city.
This is truly a great time to live in Oklahoma City and I'm very excited to bring you our OKC Living Issue. In this issue, you will find great articles and information about jobs in demand in our city, new city living spots, shopping, restaurants, and where to find all of the entertainment. Also, this month we reached out to the public in search of your photos of the city. Dozens of photographers from all over sent in amazing and artistic photos of the city that we are very happy to show you.
As you read through this issue, take our advice on places to go and things to do this summer. We have a beautiful city and I hope you’re out enjoying it every chance you can.
Going all the way back to my childhood, I have heard too many times that Oklahoma City is not a real city. Kids in high school used to say how they wanted to graduate and move to a real city. As long as I have lived in Oklahoma City, I have heard these types of things said and for much of my time here I could understand why people said these things. Now, in 2014 I live in a City that past generations never knew. We now live in a city exploding with business, culture, art, adventure, and life. A city that Business Journals ranked #1 in economic strength and one of the most affordable cities to live in. A city that ranks #4 in top 25 cities for designers and artists according to Art Bistro, and #7 in most charitable according to How America Gives.
We now live in a city exploding with growth and expansion, ushering in the developments of Bricktown, Midtown, and Downtown. Festivals of 10 of thousands of people fill the streets, new attractions and parks are always coming, and people from around the country are moving here for opportunity.
Just this year our own Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant once again brought our Jack McBride

day-to-day business practices, and we have a very
active local government that is ready and willing
to spend money when necessary.
STARTUP STRONG
Oklahoma is profitable for both new and existing
businesses. Recently, CNN named Oklahoma City
the number-one place in the country to launch
businesses that are flourishing in the Oklahoma
City metro area. In fact, last year they only
accounted for 12.4% of the state’s gross domestic
product (GDP). What other types of industries are
thriving in Oklahoma’s very profitable economy?
TRADE, TRANSPORTATION AND UTILITIES
As you can see, the industry that accounted for
the biggest share of Oklahoma’s GDP last year
was trade, transportation and utilities, followed
by the government. This makes sense, as almost
every business in Oklahoma uses utilities for their
The oil business has been a staple of Oklahoma
City’s economy forever. However, as recent trends
in the last couple of years have shown, companies

The answers may surprise you. Here are a few of the top industries along
with their corresponding GDPs for 2013:
• Trade, Transportation and Utilities – 18.0%
• Government – 15.9%
• Financial Activities – 13.7%
• Mining (oil) – 12.4%

creates a level of money circulation that many
cities are never fortunate enough to reach. These
new business startups—cupcake shops, bars,
boutiques, restaurants, and others—are helping
our economy thrive at a level that surpasses most
other major cities.
In addition, over the past few years Oklahoma
has seen a recent rise in jobs in demand across
many different fields. Some of the newer and
more popular businesses that are hiring or are in
great demand around the Metro are healthcare,
biotech and technology companies. Energy
companies always seem to be hiring, as our state
has several wind farms and other alternative
forms of energy production.
a startup business. Small business loans are
relatively easy to get here, and our state’s low
cost of living and low income tax makes Oklahoma
City a haven for new startups and entrepreneurial
business ventures alike. According to NerdWallet
analyst Sreekar Jasthi, who conducted the CNN
startup business study, “Oklahoma City has seen
a recent uptick in small business lending, which is
helping to spur entrepreneurship there.”
WE’RE GROWING
Oklahoma’s rejuvenated downtown and
several new business accelerators are helping the
city attract tons of new startups, many of which
turn a profit very quickly. When their startups turn
quick profits, business owners are more likely to
put that money back into the economy, which

Fun and functional: two words to describe this easy DIY home storage hanging shelf. It’s the perfect storage solution for renters, dorm-dwellers and others who are worried about too many holes in the walls. This is an easy way to change up your décor.
Materials & Tools:• heavy duty rope• wooden box• paint• drill • ¾ drill bit (or a bit large enough to fit your rope)• scissors• paintbrush• pencil
Instructions:1. Measure and mark where you want to drill the holes on each side of the wooden box. We recommend placing the holes toward the center of the box so that they will distribute the weight of the shelf more evenly and hang a bit easier.2. Drill the holes using a drill bit large enough to accommodate your rope.3. Thread your rope ends through each hole and tie a knot on each end on the inside of the box.4. Paint the outside edge of the box and let dry. It may require a few coats.5. Hang up your shelf on a new or existing wall hook.(www.brit.co)
Modern Hanging Shelf

I’m in love with this look: it’s modern and edgy, yet classic. Who would have thought that thumbtacks could be so gorgeous? Try this easy art addition for your space. The canvases can be either hung on the wall or leaned against a wall or shelf.
Materials & Tools:• canvas size of your choice (the one pictured is 12 x 12”)• 700 gold or silver thumbtacks• small hammer (if you don’t want to press them all with your fingers)• pencil and eraser
Instructions:1. Draw a shape on the canvas with a pencil.2. Fill in the outline with tacks.3. Fill in the remaining blank space with tacks. It’s easiest to do this in small sections, working in rows.4. Hammer over the entire piece of art to ensure all thumbtacks are sealed down.(www.livelovediy.com)

Move past monotone walls! We’re totally digging the striped wall. Don’t feel obligated to make the entire room striped. An accent wall is perfect for this project.
Materials & Tools:• 2 colors of paint (this looks great with colors in the same shade spectrum)• painter’s tape• laser level• measuring tape• pen or pencil• paintbrush• paint roller
Instructions:1. Choose horizontal or vertical stripes for your wall.2. Paint the entire wall a base color. It’s typically best to use the lightest color paint first. Let dry for 24 to 48 hours.3. Measure your wall. Divide the wall into stripes. The stripes should be between 4” and 18”, depending on how wide or narrow you prefer them, and they should be an even height or width across the wall. Mark these spots along the wall with a pencil using the laser level and measuring tape.4. Mark off the sections with the painter’s tape. Remember that the tape itself is not included in the width of the stripes. Place it accordingly to ensure the stripes are still the same width with the tape on them.5. Paint in the stripes with the second color. Let dry for 24 to 48 hours.6. Remove tape to reveal stripes.7. Decorate the wall as desired! (www.HGTV.com)

plans to open in the area, on the northwest corner
of N.W. 10th and Shartel Avenue. The multi-million-
dollar luxury apartment complex will also feature
retail space on its ground floor. The complex will
have three courtyards with a pool, outdoor kitchen
and community
space, as well as a
game room, yoga
room and fitness
center. LIFT plans
to open in the
summer of 2015.
Main EventMain Event packs bowling, laser tag, an aerial ropes
course, games, restaurants, bars and more into 58,000
square feet. This venue is a Dallas-based entertainment
powerhouse that will appeal to everyone. Main Event is
coming to Memorial Road between Penn and Western
sometime in 2015.
Chisholm Creek DevelopmentChisholm Creek, nestled in the growth corridor of northwest Oklahoma City, is the city’s first pedestrian-friendly mixed-use development. Chisholm Creek will be the perfect combination of first-class entertainment options, eclectic local and national restaurants and urban residential living. The development will run adjacent to an 80-acre city park with miles of walking and biking trails. There is talk of many national retailers moving into this prime location. Top Golf, a 65,000-square-foot golf-themed entertainment facility, has already confirmed that it will be building in Chisholm Creek. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements!
70-Acre Downtown ParkMAPS 3 has approved a master plan for a
downtown park that will consist of 40 acres
north of I-40 and 30 acres between I-40
and the river, connected by the SkyDance
pedestrian bridge. This park will be a
place where the community can gather to
play, picnic, exercise and attend concerts
and festivals. The goal is to entice the
community to spend more time outdoors,
encouraging a healthier lifestyle.

the Outlet Shoppes, which opened in August 2011.

years ago, Kendra Scott

this popular jeweler.
West ElmHome furnishings galore are heading this way!
West Elm, a subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma, will

company. This upscale
home décor store is
sure to lend a touch of
contemporary style to
homes across the state.
Oak and Ore
The Plaza District is adding to its family. Oak and Ore, a craft beer restaurant, will

Chicago and the boom in the social eatery market.
Roxy’s Ice Cream

with food truck
fans, is opening its
first storefront this
summer. Roxy’s
will feature an old-fashioned counter where
customers can enjoy freshly made ice cream,

LIVINGOne of the new up-and-coming places in Midtown
is the Edge, a multi-level apartment complex complete
with first-floor shopping, a resort-style swimming pool, a
rooftop dog park, a 24-hour gym and much more. Many
people are finding that they can ditch the homeowner
lifestyle and jump into the amenity apartment lifestyle.
This is a way for people to finally experience a true city
and luxurious lifestyle for less cost. This is just one of the many places popping up in Midtown with a
combination apartment/shopping complex, which is proving very popular in large cities these days. The
Edge will open in September 2014.
One of the reigning champs for desired midtown living is the Twelve Twelve building. This apartment
complex sits just above the popular Waffle Champion and Dry/
Shop (Blow Dry Bar & Boutique). There are 24 contemporary and
luxurious apartments that have open floor plans, balcony views
of plaza court, downtown, and the perfect walking proximity
to restaurant and retail. Perfect for a person who wants to be
submerged in the urban out and about lifestyle. There’s plenty of
festivals, restaurants, and events to keep you busy!
Just northwest of downtown Oklahoma City, there’s a place that is currently experiencing
more growth than any other part of the Metro. We’re talking about Midtown, of course, which
has some of the best eateries and nicest places to live in the city. Over the past few years,
Midtown has become one of OKC’s most populous districts. It currently sits at right around
3,600 residents. According to midtownokc.com, the Midtown we see today was a direct
response to the community’s desire for urban lifestyle options. “In this vision, a hip, energized
urban population enjoys exceptional restaurants, stylish shops and first-rate art galleries, all
located nearby.” The city planners certainly have fulfilled that idea, and today Midtown is one
of the best places in the greater Oklahoma City area.

EATERIES
Café do Brasil, located on 11th Street, is one of the best spots in all of OKC for live music, exotic drinks
and an entertaining atmosphere. Café do Brasil is located in a white Spanish mission-style building and
is open Tuesday through Thursday. Head Chef Ana Davis has carefully crafted her menu with inspiration
from the most prominent and highly respected chefs in Brazil.
If Brazilian food isn’t your thing, 1492 New World Latin Cuisine at 1207 N. Walker Ave. is another great
place to enjoy a meal with friends and family. With its abundance of Mexican and Latin dishes set in a
modern atmosphere, this place has been one of the top restaurants in Midtown and OKC alike for years.
This place will certainly keep you coming back for more.
There are also many new up-and-coming eateries that are sure to satisfy your taste buds. One of the
newer restaurants around Midtown is Stella, a small upscale eatery that serves modern Italian cuisine.
OKC diners love this restaurant, as it was named the top new OKC restaurant in 2011 by readers of the
Daily Oklahoman.
DRINK UPMidtown isn’t just restaurants and apartment complexes. It has plenty
of bars and pubs, too. One of the most famous bars in Midtown is James
E. McNellie’s Pub on Classen. McNellie’s has four locations around the
state, and it is definitely an Oklahoma favorite. Their massive, top-notch
beer selection from around the world is a must-see for both casual beer
lovers and connoisseurs. With more than 350 beers in their inventory,
you can sample everything from difficult-to-find draught beers to great
local brews like Choc American Wheat and Marshall Sundown Wheat.
Their food is great too, especially the burgers.
Midtown is also distinguished by its proliferation of coffee shops,
and one stands out from the rest. Cuppies & Joe not only has a great name, but it has the refreshing,
down-to-earth local feel you might be looking for if you’re at your Starbucks saturation point. They can
make any kind of cupcake you could ever dream of, and one of those with a good ol’ cup of coffee is
a great way to start your day. They make pies and other treats as well. With this menu, it’s no wonder
Cuppies & Joe is one of the hottest coffee shops in OKC.
Oklahoma City is truly a great place to live. Our city is flourishing: the oil business is the backbone of
our economy, and the Thunder has pushed us to a new level. Midtown is located right in the heart of all
this prosperity. With numerous new projects and additions still taking place, the future looks very bright
for this 387-acre district.

Income should increase as well but you may need to wait a while before you actually see increased numbers on your bank balance. The 16th is excellent for connecting with friends and discussing commercial ventures. By the 25th you may have that long awaited pay rise but be careful on the 26th when relationships and work could be in conflict.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)Your energies are low now with Mars the active planet in your twelfth house at the right angle to Jupiter. Don’t expend more energy than necessary to get the job done and if in doubt leave it out. The period of the 2nd until the 7th may be a problem but you can start to manifest your dreams around the 7th when Mars and Neptune create a favourable aspect. A highly favourable transit of Venus to your ninth zone of travels, higher education and spirituality on the 12th is excellent for bringing you some better times.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)With Jupiter’s entry into your zone of sexuality and deeper intimate issues and the Sun also positing this zone of your horoscope, it’s likely that you want to clear up issues which are not normally spoken about. Secrets, the distant past and any sort of skeletons in you or your partner’s closet may come out into the open now. Don’t allow these discussions to degenerate into disputes and confrontations around the 3rd. A cool standoffish attitude may prevail between the 9th and 12th. Use this time to grow closer not further apart from the ones you love.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) There is a distinct change in the energy around you this month as Jupiter transits the twelfth zone of secrets, spirituality and hidden insights. This is significant and sets the trend for the next 12 months indicating that you're likely to be interested in developing your spirituality generally. Unanticipated twists and turns occur after the 9th but a heart-to-heart conversation around the 13th smooths things over. Expect good fortune on or around the 25th due to the conjunction of the Sun and Jupiter.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)Sharing your thoughts and dreams with others will help you solidify those ambitions and up until the 9th you have the perfect opportunity to do this. You will be busy preparing for outings and engagements and may act as a core part of the preparation or management of these events. You continue to attract friends throughout this month with the 12th being a significant date as Venus moves to the eleventh zone of friendship and social activities. By the 23rd you will need some time out with the Sun moving to the quiet area of your horoscope. Watch your health around the 30th.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)The Sun and Jupiter bring with them incredible good luck and around the 2nd or 3rd Mercury’s conjunction with these planets should bring good news regarding work and profession.
so6ix.com | AUGUST 2014 31
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)Zany characters enter your sphere of influence around the 1st but be careful when Venus and Uranus are at odds with each other as you may be likely to be impulsive in your choice of romance. Once again this may happen after the 12th when Venus and Mars influence your relationships generally. Tasteless passion should be avoided on the 28th. New information at hand will affect a close relationship that you’ve otherwise thought is going smoothly. By all means listen to what is said but in the end make your own informed decision.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) Saturn performs some transformative actions on your deep inner self and psyche. Confronting issues from your past between the 5th and the 13th may be unpleasant but refreshing to your mind and soul. A trip in the latter part of the month, perhaps after the 26th will be an excellent reprieve from some of the pressures of life. Try tying up loose ends.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) You will play a dominant role in your social and professional circles this month as the Sun uplifts your energy and attracts others to you. You have an extraordinarily creative mind throughout this month but will also find yourself distracted by financial issues that need your focussed attention. Carefully managing your schedule is essential. After the 26th you can expect some rather interesting changes in your workplace.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)Your desire nature is strong between the 1st and the 7th. Know when enough is enough and when someone is taking advantage of you. Heavy responsibilities can be expected between the 10th and the 23rd. This may impact on your health so increase your vitamin intake and gain adequate rest. Listening to your body signals is the key. Frustrations around the 26th may cause you to say and do things that you may regret later.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)You could be angry and will lash out at others who are either too slow or incapable of understanding your viewpoint. With Mars and Saturn edging closer to an intense conjunction in your workplace, this could relate to co-workers and their work ethics or attitudes. Flashpoints could be expected on the 10th and 11th, the 12th and the 16th to the 18th.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)You may feel as if you are out of control of your life currently with other people pulling your strings. This is a month when you need to break free of frustration and this requires pure and simple honesty on your part. The critical time is the 21st to the 26th when Mars and Saturn conjoin in your zone of romance, creativity and younger children. All of these areas require extra patience and clever negotiation on your part.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)This should be one of the better months of the year with Mercury, Jupiter and the Sun all congregating in your Sun sign of Leo. This brings with it wonderful feelings of wellbeing, confidence and optimism. Others will note this and especially around the 9th, 12th and 18th, when Venus joins this planetary line-up, expect an upliftment in your personal or professional profile and some unforeseen good fortune. Your focus turns to money after the 23rd.

This month, we headed over
to historic Stockyard City to try
out Oklahoma’s oldest restaurant,
Cattlemen’s Steakhouse. This
restaurant has a long and colorful
history dating back over 100 years
when Oklahoma City was a hub for the beef industry and the endless herds of cattle that came
through. Cattlemen’s legend has grown from the generations of ranchers, cowboys, and cattle
haulers that have frequented it to the dozens of famous actors, musicians, and even presidents
that have dropped in for the perfect steak. Cattlemen’s proudly showcases pictures of John
Wayne, Reba McEntire, Charles Barkley and even President George Bush enjoying Cattlemen’s
unrivaled steaks. Proudly, Cattlemen’s has been featured in the national spotlight in television
shows such as Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, as well as Man Vs. Food and magazines like Bon
Apetit and Southern Living. Today, Cattlemen's is known not only for its unique history, but mainly
for its terrific food - perfectly aged steaks, legendary breakfasts, and the best cup of coffee that
Seattle couldn't touch. Smack in the middle of Oklahoma City's Stockyards City, make a stop and
soak in the rich atmosphere that feels like home. This is one restaurant that every ‘Okie’ has to
eat at and enjoy the quality history and amazing food.
T-Bone Steak
This hearty portion is sort of “two steaks in one”. It combines the full flavor of the Strip Sirloin,
the impeccable tenderness of the Filet and joined together by the famous “T”. This is the steak
President Bush preferred when dining in Oklahoma City.
Filet Mignon
A choice cut of beef tenderloin with all the sealed in savory juices, bacon wrapped and broiled
to your taste.
Lamb Fries
A Cattlemen’s specialty for many years served with a baked potato and includes Cattlemen’s
salad and homemade rolls.
Cream Pie
This delicious slice of pie is homemade in their bakery and is the perfect finish to your meal.

BRACIOLA(pronounced brah-zhul)
Braciola:1 - 1 1/2 pound Red Rock Premium Beef Flank Steak1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese1/2 cup panko bread crumbs1/2 cup minced fresh parsley 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oilkosher saltblack pepper
Garnish:1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese1 tsp. minced fresh Italian parsley
COOKING WITH CHEF ROBINETT
Instagram: @chefrobinett5Twitter: @chefrobinett5
Trim off any large pieces of fat on the surface and along the edges - not much trimming should be necessary, and pat steak dry. Next, wrap flank steak with plastic wrap - leaving space around all four sides, pound out the meat until it is nice and even, about a half inch thick all the way through. Once the flank steak is pounded out remove from plastic, liberally season one side with salt and pepper, place that side down. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, mix together the remaining Braciola ingredients to create the filling. It should stay together when pressed. Arrange prepared steak so that the length is running left to right. Take filling and spread across, press into flank steak until completely covered on one side, leaving about an inch free of filling on the long side closest to you. Starting with
the edge without filling, roll the flank steak like a pinwheel. Tie the roll using butcher's twine so that it will hold together during the cooking process.
Heat olive oil in Dutch oven until very hot. Carefully lay the rolled flank steak, seam side down, into the hot oil. Allow to brown for 1 to 2 minutes, repeat until all sides are browned finishing with the seam side down. Add your sliced onions and brown, then add dry white until nearly cooked out of the pan, then add remaining sauce ingredients, stir thoroughly bring to a simmer, cover completely and place in oven to braise for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Remove from oven, carefully remove lid to check sauce. There should be a nice hearty sauce in the base of the pan, if sauce is really thick, add just enough water to loosen it up, blend well. Allow meat to rest in the pan for 10 minutes.
To serve: Remove Braciola and place on cutting board, remove butchers twine, and slice Braciola into 1-inch thick pieces - serve with sauce, and garnish.
Using the right beef here is very important. When you put your valuable time into making a dish like this, you want the best possible outcome. I prefer, and highly recommend using beef from Red Rock Premium Beef Company – it’s all-natural, grain fed, and dry-aged – you can’t beat it!
Sauce:1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced1 cup dry white wine1 15 oz. can tomato sauce1 15 oz. can diced tomatoes2 tsp. dried oregano1 tsp. dried thyme1 tbsp. dried parsley
Preparation:Pre-heat oven to 375 F

Meet Amanda, a marketing director
for Cornerstone Development, a major
development powerhouse for living here in
the city. Amanda got started in the multi-
family industry in 1999 from a leasing agent
position. She quickly found herself growing
and being recruited into higher-up positions
among various property companies. She
even worked for the popular publication
and website of Apartment Guide and
Apartmentguide.com, helping thousands
find their place in the state.
Now with Cornerstone, Amanda’s favorite
part, on the marketing side, is being able
to use her creativity and enhance the
properties traffic. Her goal is to fill them
up, increase the traffic, and maintain those
numbers. She loves being able to connect
with people and businesses around the city.
It’s extremely rewarding for her to really
help people find their home. Whether it be
a temporary fit or complete relocation, they
have so many properties that she is able to
find a perfect fit for just about everyone. In
our economy today, it’s always the question
of rent vs. buying and what to do. Amanda
is pro either way, but puts an emphasis on
the renting side. She explains that there
is much less upfront cost and incredible
properties that can offer the amenities that
most people would love to live with, but can’t
afford or upkeep along with a home. People
can finally have the lifestyle without all of the
costs and long-term commitments. It’s a way
of urban life with special treatment.
When not marketing property, Amanda
loves spending time with her two kiddos.
She loves being able to entertain them
and truly just make them happy. She also
enjoys spending time with friends, traveling,
soaking up time on the beach, and spending
time with family. She is a tutor at Whiz Kid’s
studio, and is also a two-time NOVA award
winner throughout her career.

TOM H. VAUGHTCommercial Real Estate Advisor at LaGree Associates
Meet Tom, a commercial real estate
advisor here in the city for the past
four years. Tom has always been an
entrepreneur from a young age. He started
his own eBay business where he bought
and sold items for a profit. Tom realized
once college rolled around that he would
study entrepreneurship. Lucky enough for
him, Oklahoma State has recently started a
new program that was growing quickly and
successfully due to Mr. Morris, a professor
that had a large impact on Tom’s career and
drive. Commercial real estate truly lets Tom
work with small businesses, his passion,
every single day. He is constantly learning
about business plans. In the future, Tom
hopes to own and run an array of different
businesses, in addition to real estate.
His favorite part is meeting with clients
and taking the time to figure out what they
need and how to fit them to the right area
or space for their business. It’s rewarding
when he is able to make the perfect match
for an appreciative client. Tom’s main focus
of business is in the Northwest side of
Oklahoma City, in addition to the occasional
Bricktown or Downtown space. Tom has
lived his whole life in the city, seeing it
grow and the new businesses coming in is
exciting. He loves the way the city is headed
in growth.
When not in real estate, Tom is outdoors.
He is the captain of an Ultimate Frisbee team
who are in their summer league right now. He
enjoys kayaking, wakeboarding, mountain
biking, and hanging out with friends in
midtown. One of his other passions outside
of work is helping out with children’s church
at Frontline Church downtown.
