So6ix staff members have had a fun month preparing the “Nightlife” August issue. Summer is coming to a close, but the excitement of summer nights doesn’t have to end. We have ventured through numerous bars and nightclubs in the Oklahoma City met-ro area, and we are providing you with reviews and pictures from more than a dozen of the hottest spots for fun, food, drinks, and music. Oklahoma City continues to support clubs and bars that have been local favorites for years, as well new, fun places that are continually popping up as Oklahoma City remains on its path of expansion. Each place we reviewed has some-thing unique to offer, so enjoy your read, and find some new places to hang out for nightlife fun.

A member of our staff also took a

recent trip to Vegas and came back with two great articles reviewing the top party and music scene for Vegas nightlife. And for those of you looking for some new cocktail recipes, look no further. We found some refreshing, delicious, and sure-to-please drinks for the summer. And as always, we have tips in fashion, beauty, and self-help from some excellent Oklahoma City writers.

Enjoy the re-mainder of your summer!

arieS You must not allow your mind to trick you into believing that caution is in some way doubt or a lack of self-con-fidence. Uncertainty is part and parcel of everyone’s journey at differing times and throughout August, you may feel as if you’re not up to the task. It’s only likely in the first few days of the month, but after the 4th, optimistic Jupiter will definitely spur you on to move forward in your plans.

TauruSBy the 10th you might feel exasperated by your situation. And Mars and Ura-nus, notorious for mishaps, might actu-ally cause you to stumble and fall, both figuratively and literally. Try to plan very carefully, and don’t do too much rush-ing about during these transits. You may meet with obstructions, which in turn cause you to overreact, so take your time, and act in a measured way in all your dealings.

geminiThe period of the 3rd to the 5th is a per-fect time to seek out financial backing for your concepts. There are great devel-opments in your career, and you can look forward to laying down the foundations for your ambitions. Anyone who is in a position to assist you financially should be spoken to now, and you should also take special care with your business plan and mission statements.

cancerA new love affair or friendship is on the horizon from the 1st. Venus in perfect aspect to Uranus puts you in touch with unusual people who really stoke the fire of your passion. Try to exercise some restraint, however, particularly up until the 5th as Mars will also activate your Sun sign making you very impulsive and likely to do things more for shock value rather than for true inner fulfillment.

leoA friend or younger member of the fam-ily may need some assistance financially between the 8th and the 12th. Some-times money is not the solution, but rather helping someone to help them-selves. Look at the best-case scenario for them rather than just handing money over, and teach them the skills to earn and manage money for themselves.

VirgoVenus moves to your Sun sign after the 21st, and as a result you may realize that some facets of your personality and the way that you deal with people, possibly some negative habits or communica-tions traits, have held you back from achieving satisfaction. These insights should be welcomed as it gives you the chance to improve yourself and to im-prove your inner and outer worlds there-by creating harmony in many different areas of your life.

libraVenus enters your Sun sign on the 7th and makes contact with Saturn. Al-though you’ll feel good about yourself, you might find yourself in the company of more conservative people. Be careful how you present yourself, and don’t as-sume that others are going to think ex-actly like you. You need to scout out the territory first if you’ve been invited to a party or some other social gathering just to figure out what the people’s reactions to you will be like.

ScorpioRomantic surprises are on the cards this month with Venus and Uranus creating a favourable influence for you. The un-expected is likely to happen within the arena of work. Could this possibly be a workplace romance? Perhaps, but that comes with its own downside as you know. Be careful before jumping out of the pan and into the fire. Be particularly mindful of this scenario around the 27th, when the Moon also joins this combina-tion, making you highly emotional.

SagiTTariuSMuch of your attention this month, par-ticularly between the 5th and the 13th, centers on changes to career plans. There are wonderful developments in your workplace that have to do with new contacts. Sometime after the 16th you’ll experience an upswing in profits and this could be a gift, inheritance or some lucky win. You’re also in a better position to negotiate a joint venture or a contract. capricornYour attention this month could also be grabbed by some lingering issue relating to taxation or shared resources within your family. Resolve these problems par-ticularly between the 5th and the 10th. If you have been lavish in your spending and not putting aside enough money for your tax bill this could be a big lesson for you.

aquariuSBetween the 8th and the 11th, Mercury and the Sun emphasise close relation-ships, but you’re trying to find balance between feeling that you’re too demand-ing and that you simply want some fair-ness and harmony as part of the over-all deal. If you don’t ask for something, you’re never going to get it. Older rela-tionships are also highlighted through this cycle, but there could be a little ten-sion or aggression as part of some nego-tiation or agreement.

piSceSYou create a good solid basis for com-munication with the one you love most between the 9th and the 12th. Don’t be weak in demanding fairness for a mutu-ally supportive relationship otherwise you’ll find the other person stepping all over you. Posture respectfully. You’ll have all your needs met and the other person will also be satisfied with the outcome. Between the 13th and 17th you have to create the social situations and emotional experiences that you want.

Searching for love can be difficult and frustrating, especially when one rela-tionship after another continually fails. You begin to wonder if there is even someone out there? The answer to that question, my friends, is “yes.” The real questions that should be asked are: Am I looking in the right place? Am I the one who is doing something wrong? It is easy for us to automatically put the blame other things for our failure and frustra-tion. The same concept applies in rela-tionships. Let’s look at a couple things that might help you in your search for that perfect someone.

The first question: Am I looking in the right place? Despite the fact that the theme of this month’s issue is nightlife, if clubs and bars are where you are look-ing to find a potential mate, chances are you’re probably going to end up heart-broken and used. Why you ask? Because that is a scene where people are just out to have fun and are simply looking for

a good time; it is not to find a romantic relationship. Sure, that guy you meet there may say all the right things and promise you the world, but we all know what his ultimate goal is and it’s not long term. And yeah, that girl may make you feel like a stud, think she’s all about you, and showers you with compliments as she enjoys free drink after free drink and leaves without even asking for your name or your number. Let’s face it; the party scene is for fun, not for love. Try looking at places like church, friendly get-togethers, online dating, and other harmless activities where people are be-ing real.

The second question: “Are you the problem?” Like I said earlier, it’s easy to blame other things, but rarely do we ever look at our own actions and thought patterns. Maybe you are the person who keeps leading others on, starting argu-ments, being clingy, or just simply not knowing what you want. Next time you begin dating someone and things begin to go wrong, before you blame them or something else for the problems, look at what you might be doing or not doing to screw things up. Take a look at your dating history and patterns. Is it always the same reason for failure? If it is, then most likely you are the one that is the problem.

Dating can be hard, especially when you’re looking for true love, but it can be easier. First, pay attention to where you are looking for that special someone be-cause the wrong places will bring about the wrong results. You wouldn’t go to the grocery store to buy a hammer would you? Second, don’t be so hasty to blame other things for failure in a relationship. Pay attention to your dating history, find the repeating problems, and swallow your pride and check yourself first before blaming others. Following these simple things may not guarantee love, but it will most certainly make your search easier.

Summertime is working overtime this year. It’s one of the hottest we’ve had in some time. You may not be able to beat this heat, but make a few of the drinks below, and you’re certain to feel a bit better about it! Whether you’re flying solo or entertaining for a crowd, we’ve got you covered.

WATERMELON-BASIL MOJITO

This is a refreshing twist on an old fa-vorite, particularly good right now when watermelon is at its peak freshness. For an even sweeter drink, you can add one ½ ounce of watermelon liqueur or schnapps.

1/3 cup fresh watermelon chunks1 ounce fresh lime juice1 ounce simple syrup 4 basil leaves and a few more for garnish1 ½ ounces light rumsplash of club soda

Simple syrup is, well, very simple to make. Dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 2 cups of water over medium heat. Let the mixture cool, refrigerate it, and use it as needed. In a cocktail glass, muddy the melon, lime juice, basil leaves, and syrup. Add the rum, and the schnapps or liqueur if you like. Top it off with crushed ice and club soda, then mix well from the bottom up. Pretty up this sweet thing with a basil leaf and a piece of water-melon rind.

HURRICANE

Debuted at the 1939 New Orleans World Fair, this drink was immortalized by Big Easy club owner Pat O’Brien when he found himself with way too much rum on his hands right after the end of Pro-hibition. Although named for the hur-ricane shaped glass it is customarily served in rather than the weather disas-ter, this is a sneaky drink. This is a sweet, sweet libation, so you can’t even taste the rum if it’s properly made. The tradi-tional garnish for this drink is a mara-schino cherry and an orange slice. It is served on the rocks.

2 ounces light rum2 ounces dark rum1 ounce orange juicejuice of one ½ lime1 tablespoon simple syrup1 ounce grenadine

SANGRIA

This Spanish punch is no fuss and no muss. White or red sangria can be made in no time at all. Perfect for large gather-ings, many pitchers can be made ahead of time. Sangria is so much fun to make because you can individualize each batch, using your favorite fruits or sea-sonal picks.

1 bottle Merlot, Shiraz, or Cabernet1 lemon and 1 orange cut into wedges2 tablespoons sugarclub soda

Squeeze the juice from the fruit wedges into the wine and add the sugar, simple as that. It’s not unheard of to add a jigger of rum, gin, or brandy into the mix for an extra kick. Strawberries, kiwi, blue-berries and peaches tickle your fancy? Throw them in as well. Chill the mixture overnight. When you’re ready to serve it, pour in about a half liter of club soda. For a sweeter wine punch, use citrus soda or ginger ale instead of seltzer.

White sangria needs a tad more sugar, let’s say 2/3 of a cup. Gewurztraminer is a perfect wine for a white sangria. It’s light, reasonably priced, and it smells like roses. Riesling, Chardonnays and Pi-not Gris are great as well.

GROWN FOLKS’ LEMONADE

Another crowd pleaser, this ‘lemonade’ can be whipped up in mere minutes.

15 ounces vodka7 ounces triple sec½ can lemon-lime soda4 ounces fresh lemon juice½ cup sugarsweet and sour

Toss into your pitcher the vodka, triple sec, soda, and lemon juice. Pour sweet and sour mix in until it’s about halfway full. Stir in the sugar and serve it over ice. Two or three splashes of grenadine will sweeten it up a bit more if you like.

VODKA COLLINS

Well, the oldies are still around for a rea-son: They are classics. The Vodka Collins is easy on the waistline as well, weighing in at around 160 calories.

2 ounces vodkajuice of one ½ lemon1 teaspoon powdered sugarclub soda

Into a shaker with ice go the vodka, sug-ar, and lime juice. Pour it into a Collins glass filled with ice and top it off with soda water.

STRAWBERRY-COCONUT DAQUIRI

Summer wouldn’t be as fun without a gooey blender drink, would it, ladies? This concoction is a skinny drink of only 100 calories.

2 ½ cups strawberries, fresh or frozen (not thawed)3 tablespoons sugar2 tablespoons lime juice3 cubes ice, give or take¾ cup Malibu or other coconut flavored rum

Blend all ingredients but the ice and rum until smooth. Whip in the ice and rum until it’s good and frothy. This recipe makes about six drinks.

It’s easy to keep your calorie consump-tion in check without killing your buzz by making sure you always use freshly squeezed fruit juice instead of prepared. Also, use sugar and simple syrup to taste, regardless of how much the recipe actually calls for.

Dan McGuinness may be the only au-thentic Irish Pub in town, or at least the most authentic. It started in—you guessed it—Ireland, and they have kept the inte-rior atmosphere true to how it should be. The newest Dan McGuinness location is in Moore, meaning it’s away from most of the loud and crowded bustle of downtown. Dan McGuinness also has a location in Edmond as well, so there’s sure to be one close to you, and with karaoke Thursdays, it’s sure to be a great time. Their specialties are domestic and imported beers, but they also feature many other drinks as well, and they serve until 2 a.m. This is one of the best places to relax and simply enjoy a beer with friends, and although the menu features several traditional Irish dishes, you can still get a great-tasting prime rib or turkey sandwich.

The original Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub, located in Houston, Texas, was created in 1977 to em-body the electric living space of the great fic-tional detective Sherlock Holmes—a character made famous by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1995, new ownership took on the challenge of creating and fine-tuning this unique concept. Their vision catapulted that one neighborhood institution into what is now several locations made up of two unique concepts: Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub & Grill and 221B Baker St. Pub & Grill (the famed London address of Sherlock Holmes). Without los-ing sight of the original inspiration, each lo-cation remains true to its Sherlockian roots and strives to be unique to the neighborhood in which it resides – inviting all guests to call Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub & Grill their “local pub.” The Oklahoma City location is 2701 West Memorial. Baker St. hours are 11:00 am - 2:00 am Monday – Sunday.

Not that long ago it seemed the only hot spots for outdoor music in Oklahoma City were the beautiful Zoo Amphitheater and the many stages at our acclaimed yearly arts festivals. Now that our city is growing both materially and cultur-ally, many monthly micro-festivals have sprung up that always please this time of year. A wide range of local musicians await you at these venues along with a chance to connect with the arts commu-nity as a whole. Family friendly arenas, these gatherings feature food, a host of kids activities, and a platform for young local talent of all shades and stripes.

Devon Energy is generously sponsor-ing its Sunday Twilight Concert Series on the Grand Lawn of the newly revamped Myriad Gardens downtown. Bring pic-nic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs with you and lounge to the best sounds around as the sun sets on pretty Okla-homa City. Every Sunday night from 7-8:30pm you can be wowed by Oklaho-ma’s best performers. Variety act Shortt Dogg has something for everyone to en-joy on August 7th. If funk, blues, and reg-gae move you, don’t miss the Flatland Travelers on the 14th. Soothing choral music comes on the 21st, and the season winds down with the groovy Latin fusion music of Tekumbe on August 28th. These events are presented in conjunction the Arts Council, which asks only that you not bring pets or glass containers.

The Myriad Gardens have only been around since 1988, a long time coming from a 1960’s dream of the famed archi-tect I. M. Pei. The Gardens have just gone through a fabulous refurbishing, housing thousands of plants from six different countries. The Crystal Bridge has been gloriously repaneled by Project 180. The seventeen acres of flora now include res-taurants, a dog park, a skating rink, and a 35-foot waterfall. The piece de resistance is of course the new amphitheater, where you’ll be enjoying the sweet sounds of lo-cal talent these summer Sundays.

Live on the Plaza is an art walk extrav-aganza happening on the second Friday of each month from 7-11pm. August 13th brings live music by DJ Neu and Back to School Style MASCOT at Bad Granny’s Bazaar begins at 8pm. Past performers have included the Shining Lights and the Judges. Don’t miss open mic at Coffy’s Cafe, a roundup of poets and musicians from all over the metro. The sign up sheet is at the counter, so get up there yourself: You can do it!

The Plaza District suffered a down-turn in the 70’s, but is now the most pro-gressive arts district in Oklahoma City. The Plaza was the first air-conditioned theater in our state when it opened in 1935, and it presently houses our beloved Lyric Theatre. This district is rich with new galleries like DNA and the Conver-gence Collective Arts Space. You’ll almost always find the rising young star Matt Josef painting away in his studio as well. Atomic Dogs and Big Truck Tacos are fix-tures here, so stop by and tap your feet in the street: It’s dinner and a show.

We’re all excited about Classen Curve, a sleek and upscale addition to Oklaho-ma City. On the first Thursdays of August and September from 6-8pm, you can en-joy live music here hosted by the many businesses nestled in the Curve. Past acts have included Oxford Town, the Aguilar Brothers Band, and the Famous Ameri-cans. The Sugar Free All Stars will be giv-ing a show on August 13th at 10:30am beside Uptown Kids The shops stay open until 9pm on festival nights, and the retailers offer special bargains and dis-counts. Food and drink are available for purchase in front of Republic Gastropub and between Steven Giles and Uptown Kids. Come visit Balliet’s, On A Whim, and the upscale fitness studio Barre3 accom-panied by a grand soundtrack. Follow Classen on the Curve on Twitter to keep abreast of what they’ll do next.

If you have overwhelming debts, bankruptcy may be one of many options to pursue to get a fresh start to your fi-nancial life. The concept of bankruptcy is ancient; Chapter Fifteen of the Book of Deuteronomy is the basis for the mod-ern law. The founders of our country thought bankruptcy protection was im-portant enough that bankruptcy is spe-cifically listed as one of Congress’ jobs in our Constitution. If you have over-whelming debts as the result of job loss, uninsured medical expense, cut in pay, divorce, etc., there is nothing illegal or immoral about accepting the financial fresh start offered by law.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the most common type of bankruptcy and is the Chapter that most people associate most closely with a “bankruptcy.” In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the person filing a bank-ruptcy, a debtor, surrenders any paid off non-exempt assets (boats, RVs, Picassos, gold bars) and receive a discharge of all unsecured debts.

Prior to filing a bankruptcy, debtors have to show proof that they have com-pleted a credit counseling class. There is another class required prior to final-izing the case. In the Petition and at-tached schedules filed with the Court, the debtor(s) have to provide: a list of all creditors and the amount and na-ture of their claims, the source, amount, and frequency of the debtor’s income, a list of all of the debtor’s property, and a detailed list of the debtor’s monthly liv-ing expenses, i.e., food, clothing, utilities,

taxes, medicine, etc. Most of the property listed by debtors

will also be “exempt.” That means that creditors cannot take the property to pay for debts. In Oklahoma, this includes your homestead, 100 chickens, wages, and a host of other items. Most impor-tantly for most debtors, filing a petition under Chapter 7 “automatically stays” (stops) most collection actions against the debtor or the debtor’s property. This prevents creditors from suing debtors or continuing lawsuits, wage garnish-ments, or even telephone calls demand-ing payments.

After the filing is completed, in most cases the heavy lifting is over. Between twenty and forty days after the filing, the trustee will schedule a meeting where the debtor(s) have to attend and verify that they didn’t lie in their petition or schedules, that they really are the peo-ple that filed the case, that they don’t expect to win the lottery soon, and the creditors have a chance to come and ask questions of the debtors.

We’ll be covering other Chapters of the Bankruptcy Code in upcoming ar-ticles; if you have any questions about bankruptcy, please call qualified coun-sel. This is a very complex area of law and not an area where people should try to represent themselves. My law firm is a debt relief agency pursuant to the Bank-ruptcy Code and we assist people in fil-ing all types of bankruptcies. If we can help, or if you have questions, please let us know.

In an industry in which success is hard fought and longevity is a rarity, the reinvention of self is an absolute neces-sity. Internationally renowned DJ and producer, Paul Oakenfold, could easily be considered the reigning king of rein-vention and a musical trailblazer that has transcended the hands of time. Re-cently, Oakenfold and I chatted about life, Las Vegas, and music as we toured through Rain Nightclub at the Palms Ca-sino and Resort.

The two-time Grammy nominated DJ and producer began his musical career at the age of 16 in London. After DJing in Covent Garden, London throughout the late 1970’s, Oakenfold made the major move to New York City. He soon found himself working for Def Jam and Pro-file Records as an A&R rep in which he would sign such artists as Salt N’ Pepa and DJ Jazzy Jeff and, then newcomer, Will Smith.

After a stint as a promoter and agent for the Beastie Boys and Run D.M.C. throughout the mid-80’s, Oakenfold would find yet another reinvention of self in the most unexpected place. In 1987, he would visit the island of Ibiza to celebrate his birthday. The island is re-nown for its summer parties and amaz-ing dance following. It would be here that he introduced the world to his now-famous Balearic trance sound and truly make his mark as a producer.

After two decades of producing hits for superstars such as Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, U2, Nicki Minaj, Jen-nifer Lopez, and many more, Oakenfold made the decision to take his first U.S. residency at Rain nightclub with Planet Perfecto on Saturday nights. Consider-ing Perfecto to be just another event at a nightclub would be an injustice. In a city in which the incredible can appear mundane, Oakenfold says, “The average Vegas clubgoer is spoiled.” With this in mind, he created something that would leave even the most experienced partier in awe and craving more.

Perfecto is far more than just a Sat-urday night at a nightclub. Aerialists, characters, and planets take you on a dream-like trip. Promoting underground dance music with a show like no other, Oakenfold says, “We take you on a jour-ney through a musical galaxy. We are adding something different to Vegas. It’s more of a show instead of rather than a nightclub playing the same old music. We are focusing on the music, focusing on the show, and giving people far more for their money.”

When asked why he chose Las Ve-gas and Rain as his first U.S. residency over so many other locations, Oakenfold stated, “Vegas is an international desti-nation. It’s the new Ibiza for me. What happens here is the future. ”

Your face is your brand, or at least part of how you identify yourself and present yourself to the world every-day. Many women don’t feel confident that they look acceptable without their make-up. Some women spend an hour every morning to re-create the master-piece that is your face. The right foun-dation, blush, eyeliners, colors, and blending have to be applied masterfully and almost identically each day of your adult life. You feel “bare” without it, and debate whether or not to go to the store without you make-up. What if you could wake up the appearance that you are fully made up? The time you would save everyday alone would be life-changing. That’s what Permanent make up does for people__ it gives convenience, effi-ciency and a consistent look that gives you the confidence that reflects a fully made-up face.

What is Permanent make-up?

Permanent make-up, also called der-mapigmentation, micropigmentation, and cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic technique that employs tattoos or the permanent pigmentation of the skin, producing a design that mimics or re-sembles make-up or topically applied cosmetics.

Permanent make-up in OKC remains among the most popular aesthetic non-surgical procedures. The practice of cos-metic tattooing dates back to the 1930’s when vegetable dyes were injected un-der the top layer of skin as a complexion treatment. Nowadays, Permanent make-up can be used as eyeliner to enhance the lash line or to create an aesthetic contour for the lips. It can recreate the eyebrows which may be diminished or lost due to aging, chemotherapy or alo-

pecia. It can also be used to enhance the color of the face, lips and eyelids. It can be used to camouflage hypopigmented areas of the skin, including those due to vitiligo and to disguise scars. It can also be used to recreate and restore the breast’s areola and nipple after breast cancer surgery.

The Permanent Make-up Procedure:

The Most popular Permanent Make-up procedures are:

• Eyeliner• Eyeshadow• Eyebrow enhancement• Lip Liner• Full lip color• Areolar resoration (Free for Breast Cancer surgery patients)

Each procedures takes about 90 min-utes. It begins with reviewing health his-tory to make sure there are no contra-indications to the permanent make-up procedure. The make up is then drawn on and the possible colors are reviewed. A tattooing device is used to place the pigment into the skin in the appropriate areas. The swelling after the procedure is done may last 2-4 days. Touch –ups may be required once the swelling has resolved. If you have questions or want

The multi-billion dollar Las Vegas nightlife industry often serves as the benchmark that other cities around the world aspire to emulate in terms of nightclub styling and events. Each year, Las Vegas nightlife magnate and former Oklahoman, Jack Colton, hosts the party for all parties— the Las Vegas Party Awards. This event highlights the best-of-the-best annual nightlife events and celebrates the men and women who make them possible.

Thousands of votes were cast to select the events that would take home the cov-eted mirror ball trophies, and we were in Las Vegas at The Bank nightclub to wit-ness the awards ceremonies firsthand.

Downtown Oklahoma City has come such a long way this past decade. The development of Bricktown with all of the new restaurants, Thunder games, and nightclubs makes our state’s capi-tal a hopping place. Whether you are meeting some friends or going out to party, you always want to dress to im-press. Here are some suggestions on what to wear and what NOT to wear when heading out for a night on the town.

Nightlife is dark as is, so by wearing summer’s top bright colors like orange, pink, green, and blue you’ll be sure to stand out. These colors aren’t to be min-imized to shirts and dresses only. Dress yourself from head to toe. Bold color combos are sure to be spotted at club entrances and bars. Even just playing with color blocking can be great if done correctly. Check out Gucci’s Spring 2011 Collection to see color blocking perfec-tion. If on a lesser budget, you can also find great pieces at AmericanApparel.com. Use color in your skirts, shorts, shoes, and jewelry as well.

Ladies, listen up. Thick heels are in, and they’re marking their territory. It’s about time too! Skinny high heels don’t make for easy walking and espe-cially dancing, especially if you choose to have an adult beverage or five. De-signer Dries Van Noten has introduced bright colored and fun thick heels for the spring, so make sure to check them out. I even just saw some really cute color blocked heels at Dillard’s.

Even though the temperature here has been record-setting hot, sleeveless jackets are making a statement. The tuxedo sleeveless jacket is one of the more popular looks for this upcoming season, especially if you want to dress up your attire for nighttime.

The exotic snakeskin pattern has also made its way back into the scene. Snakeskin bags, shoes, and clothing can make you look sexy and feel sexy. Men can even get a snakeskin belt to

partake in this latest trend. If you’re feeling dangerous, snakeskin is sure to portray the vibe.

One of my personal favorites, white, is back. The classic little black dress can now be replaced by a little white dress. A lightly starched white button up shirt untucked with a great pair of shorts is a great look for a guy this summer. White also enhances the tan you’re most likely working on at weekends by the pool or at the lake. Pairing turquoise accessories with white is a fun way to sport this new look, as well as any metallics.

If there’s one thing you can keep from this past season, it’s florals. They’re here to stay, at least for now. If you don’t own any of these spring fashion trends, I advise you to make some purchases. If you’re in the trendy scene, you must fit the part. It’s summer, so show some skin. Opt for shorts, skirts, and dresses over pants. And by some skin I mean some; remember to keep a little skin hidden for the imagination. However, if you’re partial to pants, the ‘70s are back and they’ve brought along the flared jeans look.

The main thing to remember when going out this summer is to feel good in whatever clothes you choose. Hopefully, I have given you a few tips to keep you at the front of the VIP line and not be-ing overlooked. Above all, don’t forget to rock the OKC nightlife 2011 in style!

Crowdsourcing is defined as outsourc-ing a task typically to a group of people instead of a single individual. And when it comes to social media, crowdsourcing your job search could be an effective so-lution. Are you willing to take the risk?

I saw this great video and blog post from DJ Waldow (@djwaldow) and his Job Search Social Media Experiment, titled #projectawesome on Twitter. DJ was laid off from his marketing and com-munity job at Blue Sky Factory on July 1st, 2011.  Like most people when they receive news like this, he had a choice: either do something or do nothing.   DJ chose the former.  He used his contacts and relationships to create a 4-minute video testimonial that he has posted on his blog as well as YouTube from some of the most influential online marketers and social media thinkers.   DJ is being very open with his job search and rely-ing on testimonials and  crowd sourc-ing techniques to fuel interest from em-ployers and elevate his job search.

Creative job search tactics have re-ceived good press since the recession in 2008. I’ve seen more stories on people who have used billboards, sandwich boards, and even sell themselves on e-bay to find work.  DJ’s approach fits his industry (marketing and so-cial media) and demonstrates his expertise and credibil-ity not just because of the testimonials, but also be-cause of the quality of edited video that he put together.

DJ uses different versions of his resume to appeal to different audiences, while elevating his blog post at the top of search engines — You-Tube and slide share.

The concept of crowd sourc-ing your resume is one that I like.   It’s smart.   It bypasses the traditional long and often frustrat-ing job search and interview evaluation

process.  His hope is to reach a company or industry influencer without using an applicant tracking system or working with the first point of contact, usually the HR professional or recruiter.

Early case studies like this are inter-esting because they make use of social media and the micro celebrity in a new and interesting way.  The stigma that is sometimes still associated with being laid off by prospective employers is less-ened because he is able to demonstrate his own skills in action as an online and social media marketer.

The question is: how can you use social media to elevate your job search?  Can crowdsourcing tactics help or hurt your job search outside of the social media and marketing industries?   Have you built an effective social network commu-nity with influencers online who, when the time comes, will share your story and recommend you to their friends and business contacts? Watch DJ’s video and learn more at http://b4j.co/socialcrowd.

The August professional of the month is Heather Goldsby. She is a registered dental hy-gienist currently working at Elite Smiles for Mi-chelle Sanor D.D.S. Heather was born and raised in Edmond, OK. She began working as a dental assistant her freshman year in college to help put herself through school and gain knowledge into the dental field. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Oklahoma in 2004.

Heather knew after graduating high school that she wanted to earn her degree as a dental hygienist. Heather’s dental hygienist from her youth was the person responsible for pushing Heather into the dental profession. She always spoke very highly about her career and thought Heather would be a great fit for the profession. Heather truly loves her job and takes great pride in treating patients. Her desire to help others and affect healthy change is the number one per-sonal need that is satisfied by her role as a dental hygienist. Her job also allows her to develop long-lasting relationships with her patients. Heather said, “I truly enjoy getting to know my patients on a personal level. Getting to know one another personalizes the experience and helps the patient feel comfortable during their ap-pointment.” She also values the flexibility and level of independence that is associated with the profession from number of working days per week to the particular hours worked.

A dental hygienist’s job can be complex when you take into account the variety of patients seen on a daily basis. Every patient presents a unique educational opportunity concerning the impor-tance of good oral care. The continual sharing of knowledge is the most important part of her job. Heather said, “As a dental hygienist, I take into account the entire person, not just the mouth. The overall person, personality, and medical history have to be considered. Knowing all I can about a patient helps me to communicate bet-ter and make the patient feel more at ease in the chair.” Heather tries to stress the importance of oral health in correlation to overall health. Help-ing patients to attain more knowledge about their oral health can truly save lives. In the fu-ture, Heather hopes that the community, though media and medical doctors, will be more aware of the health complications that can take place if oral care is ignored. “I love my job. I love the people contact and the ability to improve overall health through dental hygiene,” says Heather.
