The national championship is now past the halfway point and while a couple on annual front-runners have missed rounds or are out for the season with injury, an equal number of up and coming racers have stepped up to take advantage of the opportunities.

Elias Ishoel is back in the game, sweep-ing the Pro Lite class in Deadwood and posting a sixth at the X Games.

Jake Angove has been on the move since Fargo, gaining over ten spots in the championship.

Adam Renheim reeled off podiums at three straight national weekend and Winter X to put himself in the top 3.

Corin Todd earned his first podium at ACS round 7 in South Dakota and backed it up with a Bronze medal in Aspen.

Tucker Hibbert kept his Monster Energy / Arctic Cat / RAM Truck broom out of the closet, sweeping the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Pro Open division for the third straight time this season. Meanwhile, the Pro Lite division continued to heat up with two repeat winners and a point leader who refuses to stray too far from the podium. Hibbert has been on a tear since the holiday break

and won every time he was on the track in front of the typically huge crowd in western New York, including all four of his qualifying heats.

Behind Hibbert, the action on the track was as good as it has been all season with positions two through five being determined each night on the finals laps of competition. Despite injuries that have shelved a number of top competitor for the season,

Empire State Showdown

the Pro Open class is experiencing a strong youth movement that signals great things for the future.

Kyle Pallin made his return to the podium after an unexpected dry spell over the past six rounds that had many wondering what was up with Team LaVallee’s rising star. Pallin would finish on the box each night with a second and third and a number of strong qualifying runs including a great prelim battle

with Hibbert.

Logan Christian rounded out the Pro Open podium on Friday on his recently re-branded Drink Doc Arctic Cat. Christian would also finish fourth on Saturday, keeping him in a tight point battle among racers in the third through seventh position in the standings. Lincoln Lemieux was second in the premier class on Saturday, in what was effectively a home race for the

youngster from St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Lemieux was fast all weekend and had been making a run at the top five on Friday before unloading in the midst of a battle with Christian.

Adam Renheim saw his streak of consecutive weekends on the podium come to an end but the hard-charging Swede did turn in fifth place finishes each day and remains third in the championship on his Jimmy John’s-backed Ski-Doo.

Page 13: SnoX365 #005

The big question surrounding the Pro Lite class entering the weekend was could anybody crack the rock solid season being laid down by New York native and class point leader Montana Jess? With Makita/GMC/NSK racer Elias Ishoel arriving fresh off a sweep in Deadwood and a strong ride at the X Games, it wasn’t out of the question for him to begin upstaging Jess, but once again, Ishy’s propensity to unload at mid race put an even brighter spotlight on Jess who just doesn’t seem to stumble.

Axalta/Jack Link’s/AMSOI Polaris racer Jake Angove outshined both riders when he won Friday night’s final and edged closer to Jess in the championship. Jess did minimize damages with a second place, while fellow Cat racer Dan Benham stayed in the mix with a third.

On Saturday, Ishoel would manage to hang on for the entire final with Jess finishing second ahead of Angove and Benham. With the exception of Ishoel’s win it or wear it riding style, this is one of the most consistent groups of Pro Lite riders in quite some time and the championship is going to come down to every last point earned in qualifying as well as main events.

For the first time in three years, Montana Jess left New York with all his body parts intact along with the lead in the Pro Lite championship.

Jake Angove has been on a meteoric rise to the top of the Pro Lite class but now has to be nearly perfect to gain on Jess.

Dan Benham has given away a few more big point days than his top rivals, but has been very solid since earning his first win in Minnesota in January.

It was a big weekend for several racers from the northeast competing in the Pro AM classes. Danny Poirier is a legend in this part of the country. Hailing from St. Theodore d’Acton, Quebec, he is a perennial contender in the ECS Pro Open class, as well as a front-runner when he competes in the +30 class on the national tour. Poirier swept both of those classes during the weekend while also racing Pro Open with ISOC.

Megan Brodeur, another Quebecor who competes full-time in the national Pro AM Women’s class showed that her opening round win in Duluth was no fluke, as she stood on the top of the box for the second time this season. Brodeur jumped to an early lead in her final and held off challenges from Elina Ohman and defending champion Marica Renheim, who was out with an injury when Brodeur won at round one.

To top things off, Brodeur’s father Patrick finished second to Poirier in the Vet class, which meant both family members left New York leading the championship in their respective classes.

New Yorkers love snowmobile racing and the fans in Salamanca always show up, snow or no snow.

The Brodeur family lining up next year’s Christmas card photo after both Patrick and Megan (back right) locked down the point lead in their classes.

Danny Poirier puts in more laps than almost any rider on a typical weekend, competing in both Pro Open and Pro AM +30. He added another class as part of the combined program with the ECS in New York and came away with two overall wins on his Ingles Performance Ski-Doo.

AM ReportThe kids were up early and ready to race on Friday morning. It was cold, windy, and heavy snow at times for the AM portion of the day. The racing was fast and the story lines were action packed all day as the amateur racers tackled the technical track that awaited them.

First to line up was the Transition 8-12 class. Kyle Thome continues to improve. After back to back third place podiums in the national series Kyle made it happen in NY and won his first Snocross National. From Quebec Jordan Lebel finished the main in second place and Drew Freeland rounded off the podium in third. This class is very competitive and there are several entries at every event and we enjoy reporting on them and there success as they start there amateur racing careers.

Woodies Racing Jr. Girls 9-13 -  Taven Woodie made it three in a row but it didn’t come easy as Inanna Hauger from Michigan gave her a couple hard fought heats and and a very thrilling final and stood proud next to Taven in second place. Autumn Schlauderaff made her first podium appearance and claimed the third spot of the box.

Jr. 10-13 -  What else can we say about Eric Downs that I haven’t already said this year already. Again Downs dominated the field keeping his JR 10-13 record perfect for the season. The KC Motorsports entry of  Evan Christian made some more progress this weekend and finished second in the final. Evolution

Nick Lorenz has taken over the point lead in the Sport class after a pair of podiums in New York, including a win on Saturday.

Ryley Bester getting it done in the Jr. division.

Eric Downs and the Frattalone Racing team have been dominating podiums all season in the Amateur ranks.

Racing’s Benjamin Wilbert stood on the national podium for the first time this season at the end of the day placing third overall.

Jr. 14-15 & JR 16-17 -  Like his Frattalone Racing teammate Downs, Ryley Bester is perfect in both the Jr. classes and remained that way after round #5 in New York. We will get back to Ryley later in this report as he has been running the Sport Lite class. The second tier of the national podium belonged to Raphael Lemieux from Terrebonne, Quebec as he fell short of stopping Bester in both the JR classes. Taylor Cole finished third in 14-15, and Carson Alread ran third in the 16-17 class.

Sport Lite 1 - Adam Peterson has been the rider to beat in the Lite class all season, Friday would be much the same. Adam ran strong in the heat races and then went on to win the main. Connor Roscoe after making the switch from the Rockstar team to DeSilva Racing one of the premier East Coast teams ran strong and finished the day in the second place slot. Brian Petersen placed his Ski Doo on the box in third place giving Ski Doo a good looking podium in the Sport Lite 2 class.

FXR Sport 1 -  Here is where the night really gets interesting. We will start with a shout out to Polaris racer and FXR Sport points leader going into the weekend, Jake Yurk. The kid from Michigan who

has sported the red plate since Duluth was involved in a probable season ending accident. Jake was air lifted to the emergency room and suffered a lacerated liver, bruised lungs, and a injury to his arm (undetermined). The good news is Yurk will not require surgery and is back home in Michigan recovering. Don’t be surprised to see him return at Lake Geneva. In Yurk’s absence, Adam Peterson stepped up to score his first career national win in the Sport class. Peterson’s Team LaVallee stablemate

Evan Daudt got a much deserved and long overdue second place, and Nickolas Lorenz finished third and took over the red plate as your current FXR Sport points leader.

Lets rewind back to the same event last year where then current points leader Montana Jess suffered a similar

injury as Yurk and surrendered the red

plate. Fast forward one year to a now rookie Pro Lite racer named Montana Jess who has held the red plate on his Arctic Cat since Duluth.

Saturday was a new day with bright sunny skies as the morning program started the day off. Only Sport Lite and FXR Sport class were on the docket in the way of amateur racing. But there was plenty of action with theses two very  stout classes.

Sport Lite 2 - Riley Bester has moved up to the Sport Lite class to run with some faster riders and improve

Autumn Schlauderhaff racing to a third place finish in the national 120 class.

his skills in hopes to better himself in the amateur ranks. Well it turns out he is one of the fast kids in the class as he didn’t take long to make it to the podium, and the top of the podium at that. The kid is fast and we look for him to be one of the  future star of our sport. Woodie Racing Joachim Olsen from Norway continues to enjoy his stay here in the States and finished second in the final. Joachim who was only here for a couple races originally, will be here for the remainder of the season. ECS racer Cody Paolella completed the podium with a solid third place finish.

FXR Sport 2 -  It seems only fitting after laying claim to the red plate the previous night that Nickolas Lorenz would pilot his Polaris to the top of the FXR Sport 2 podium and make a statement that he will be the one you need to beat if you want the FXR Sport Championship. Eddie Neubauer continued his great season and grabbed another podium with a second place showing. Another bright spot from the weekend is #413 Evan Daudt, a true testament that you don’t give up, because if you work hard and keep trying, it will happen. Also Evan stands on the second or third spot of the podium just as proud as if he were on the top, all racers should follow in this young mans ways.

120 Champ results were Lawson Sterry with the win, Tucker Haala in second, and Autumn Schlauderaff finished strong in third.

Teven Woodie sails to her fourth straight win in Jr. 9-13 Girls.

Kyle Thome has been picking it up as of late and had a pair of thirds.

Eddie Neubauer continued his great season with another podium, finishing third on Friday.

Over the course of three seasons, what was once the bane of the national snocross schedule has become an all-out favorite stop on the tour. Set in the scenic and hospitable gulch that is Deadwood, South Dakota, the literal bull ring racetrack produces some of the best action of the season at a venue that is walking distance from the hotels and casinos occupied by racers and race fans throughout the weekend.

Tucker Hibbert has made no bones about the fact that Deadwood is still not on his short list of favorite events, but the T-Train steamrolled the competition this year, picking up his third and fourth consecutive wins. With perennial challenger Kody Kamm out and Ross Martin still nursing an ankle injury, the door was open for the surging group of young Pro Open riders to make their mark. Corin Todd was the first to stake

his claim with his first career Pro Open podium on Friday, leading much of the race and finishing in second. Tim Treblay carried the flag for the old guard rounding out the podium in third.

On Saturday Adam Renheim finish second to Hibbert, claiming his third podium in three weekends of racing. Jake Scott scored his first Pro Open podium on his Jess Racing Arctic Cat with a strong ride that had him out front for a number of laps before Hibbert made his way passed. The closing laps of the final had Renheim, Scott, Todd and Lincoln Lemieux all mixing it up into the last turn.

Elias Ishoel was racing at 100% for the fist time since breaking his ankle at round two in Duluth. Ishoel won three of his four qualifiers en route to a sweep of the class finals and appeared to be riding with a bit more patience and control.

Max Taillefer and Dan Benham rounded out Friday’s podium with title combatants Montana Jess and Jake Angove following in fourth and fifth.

On Saturday, Angove and Jess swapped positions behind Ishoel, finishing second and third, while Taillefer continued to make his case as a potential title threat finish fourth. Benham gave up a few position with his eighth place run, while Mike George had his best result of the year for the Woodies Racing team in fifth.

Amatuer RacingUnlike the pro riders who will tell you they have a love – hate relationship with the Deadwood track. The amateur racers say they love it, but you must get a good start. After that first left hand 90 from the holeshot you just put your head down and do work. A quick prayer and a little luck will go a long way as Deadwood is brutal, and will chew you up and spit you out if you don’t bring your best stuff on race day.

Elias Ishoel stormed to two wins in Pro Lite, while Jake Angove kept him in his sights throghout much of the weekend.

Cat racers Dan Benham and Montana Jess have been rubbing spindles all season at the front of the Lites field.

Kevin Wallenstein has been hanging it out this season and the effort has been rewarded. A pair of sixes in Deadwood.

Friday, the FXR Sport class and the Sport Lite class were the only amateur classes on the schedule. Beautiful weather was the perfect setting for a track built smack dab in the middle of a town surrounded by mountains. 50 degree temps also made for some heavy wet snow conditions that the riders and teams had to deal with. ISOC allowed for riders to test holeshots on Thursday, being in the mountains, setups were much different than most race weekends. Testing and setups complete, it was time to get to work and do some Snocross racing in Deadwood.

Sport Lite 1: It is my opinion, the three young men that stood on the podium at the end of the day are three names we will be hearing about in this sport well past the amateur ranks. First place Adam Peterson, cool and calm. Second place Riley Bester, smooth and strong and his mechanic has that sled dialed. Third place Taylor Cole, confident and smart. I watched this kid walk thru the pits helmet in hand and on his way to race. He walks with his head high and a look of determination on his face. The Sport Lite class I think is a great addition to the series and the racing is good.

Next was the FXR Sport 1 class: The red plate still on the Jake Yurk Polaris, Yurk has struggled the past 3 rounds and the rest of the field can smell the blood in the water. But on this night it was going to take much

more than a red number plate and a field of hungry sharks that make up the FXR Sport class to keep Nickolas Lorenz off the top of the box. Lorenz and his team were traveling to this event on I-90 and hit some black ice, the truck, trailer, and sleds were totaled after flipping and rolling into the ditch.. And thankfully nobody was injured. They went back to the shop, grabbed a different truck and parted out three sleds to make one not so pretty race sled. It did not need to look pretty as Lorenz drove that pieced-together Polaris right to the top of the FXR Sport 1 podium. His sled was fast and he was determined, and it was just one of the great moments that Deadwood always seems to produce. Eddie Neubauer and Jay Lura continued to show strength in the class, Eddie grabbed the second spot, and Jay finished in third. Points leader Yurk had a decent day finishing fifth in the main after a first in heat one, and a fourth in heat two, he walked away eager for Saturday and still sporting the red plate.

Saturday is a amateur packed day of racing as the kids were ready to get busy in the middle of the historic rodeo 76 arena.

First on the docket was the Transition class: An all green podium lead by Freeland Racing”s Drew Freeland who won his first National Transition final. It was a great team celebration on the podium. Raycer

Frank continues to be fast and finished the final in second place. The #361 Arctic Cat of Kyle Thome grabbed the third place podium spot for the second week in a row. And he started his day with a ninth in heat one, followed that up with a second in heat two.

Woodies Racing Girls 9-13 class: There were only four girls that made the trip for this race, but that

don’t mean it wasn’t going to be good racing. The young ladies rode hard and put on a great show for the Deadwood locals that were up early for the amateur classes. Taven Woodie and Ryley Hasenack both also raced in the JR 10-13 class with the boys (sorry fellas). Taven and Ryley battled the entire main event, swapping the lead spot several

times until Ryley got hung up slightly in turn two. That was all Taven would need to get away and grab the checkered flag for the third consecutive Woodies Racing Girls 9-13 final win. Hasenack in second, Makenna Kleiman rounded off the podium and Autumn Schlauderaff finished in fourth. this is another class that is a great addition to the Snocross tour.

Jr. 14-15 and Jr. 16-17: Frattalone Racing Ryley Bester has dominated both these JR classes the fist three events this winter and this weekend would be no different. I do think we are watching one of

The rough and tumble track in Deadwood is situated inside the Days of ‘76 rodeo grounds putting a snowy twist on the expression ‘Cowboy Up”

Page 31: SnoX365 #005

our next stars of the sport come up thru the ranks. Zak farmer doubled up on the podium finishing third in Jr 14-15 and second in JR 16-17. Taylor Cole returned to the box with a second place run in the 14-15 class. Isaac Schlauderaff made his podium appearance of the season running hard in the JR 16-17 final.

Jr. 10-13: By the time the final hit the track, the word was out in the 10-13 class. There were two girls that moved up to race with the boys and they were fast, and it showed in the heat races. The boys at Frattalone Racing were not intimidated as Eric Downs continued his perfect season and went one-one and first in the final. KC Motorsports’ Evan Christian was fast all day and ran a great final finishing second. Downs’ Frattalone Racing teammate Logan Frattalone joined in on the podium festivities finishing third in the final.

120 Champ Class: one of the fans favorite classes, the 120s always race hard and put on a great show. Plaisted Racing Cameron Cole was the man to beat all night and he made short work of the final and was all smiles on top of the 120 Champ podium. Tyler Martinson finished in second and Tanner Johnson took third.

Sport Lite 2: Joachim Olsen of Woodies Racing was brought in from Karasjok,Norway to fill in for injured Sport Rider Kaden Woodie. Olsen struggled in Shakopee (his first race in the U.S) in the FXR Sport class. This week he raced both the Sport and Sport lite class. The team has worked hard and has his Arctic Cat dialed in. Joachim grabbed the top of the podium after he had a nasty off over the finish line as he tried to hold of Bester and Jesse Hendrickson.

FXR Sport 2: Fast, fierce, and intense is how I would describe this class. They all want what Jake Yurk has, that red plate. Saturday Yurk wasn’t in the mood to deal with that, he came out swinging and served notice to the rest of the class that he is still the man to beat if you want that FXR Sport Championship. Winning the final and going to New York with a little momentum and some much needed confidence for the second half of the season. Nickolas Lorenz was right there and was fast again all night finishing second in the main. Eddie Neubauer continues to ride well and finished third.

The Canterbury CurseChampion racer turned Team Manager Robbie Malinoski often references the post-holiday rounds at Minnesota’s Canterbury Park as the most critical weekend on the schedule, noting that if you are not up to speed by the time you leave Shakopee, it’s doubtful that things will change down the stretch. Unfortunately, it has also proven out over time, that the Minnesota round, for no reason in particular, has a nasty habit of putting racers on the disabled list, often for the season.

Coming into what is traditionally one of the marquee

events on the tour, Tucker Hibbert and Kody Kamm were locked in a battle that many were hoping would extend to Lake Geneva. Each had a least one win in their pocket and Kamm appeared to be taking advantage of qualifying points to keep pace with the champ.

The tide would take a dramatic turn, however, as Hibbert would blast to a win on Friday, while Kamm would get scored with a 14th after gorking his throat on the handlebars and having to pull off the track.

Page 33: SnoX365 #005

WALTON

To make matters worse, Kamm would catch a rut while leading the closing laps of Saturday’s final, causing him to get pitched off the track suffering a shoulder injury that would require season-ending surgery. Hibbert would capitalize for the win but noted on the podium that he had all but conceded the victory and wasn’t comfortable trying to match Kamm’s pace on the ultra gnarly track and chalked the win up to experience.

BOSS Racing’s Adam Renheim backed up his performance in Fargo with another second place

finish, showing the way to the podium to fellow Swede Petter Narsa who captured his first top three for Hentges Racing and event sponsor Pirtek.

Narsa would improve his standing on Saturday when he finished second in the final ahead of AMSOIL/U.S. Air Force rider Lincoln Lemieux. CBR’s Logan Christian had been running in a podium position with just a few laps remaining when was crossed-up coming over the finish line jump, landing sideways before regrouping to finish fourth.

Page 34: SnoX365 #005

It was a weekend of firsts in the Pro Lite division with Jake Angove and Dan Benham racing to their career first wins on Friday and Saturday. Travis Kern and Kevin Wallenstein also had their first podiums of the season on Friday placing all three brands who complete in the series on the podium. Something that has happened on several occasions this season.

On Saturday, point leader Montana Jess would get back on the podium in the second spot while class rookie Cole Cottew would earn his first career podium in third.

Amatuer RacingWith the dawn of a new year and the holiday break over, it was time to get back on the race track. And what a better venue to start the new year than at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. One of the bigger tracks on the ISOC tour, Canterbury has a little of everything for the pro riders and the amateur racers as well.

Friday we started with the Sport Lite class and the young Polaris rider Adam Peterson continued to dominate the class as he has done all season. Peterson made three flawless runs and finished 1-1-1 for the day. Ryley Bester who has been tearing up the Jr. 14-15 and Jr. 16-17 ranks, jumped up to

Sport Lite for the day and finished first and third in his heat races and second in the final. Brandon Lind finished third to claim the last spot on the podium.

Also on Friday the FXR Sport 1 class took to the track. Jake Yurk is the rider with the red plate and was looking to keep it that way at the start of the weekend. If only the final would have gone like his heat races that he won, but it would not be the Polaris riders day as he could only salvage a tenth place finish. Eddie Neubauer was the man standing on the top of the FXR Sport 1 podium at day’s end and KC Motorsports Jay Lura had a great day and finished second overall. Durk Roper rounded out the podium in third.

Saturday, weather would play a part as temps dropped overnight and riders and teams had to adjust. Saturday is a big day of amateur racing with all classes on the schedule for the day starting with the Transition class. This class is always very competitive and this weekend would be no different than the first two rounds of the

Shakopee featured a unique elevated starting hill ala BMX that turned out to be an awesome addition to what is already a favorite course of many.

Jay Lura had a second place in Sport on his KC Motorsports Arctic Cat.

Eddie Neubauer put his own Canterbury Curse behind him with a win in Sport, marking the first time in three seasons the N2 rider has been healthy going into round seven.

young snocross season. Raycer Frank was looking like the rider to beat as he qualified number one. But the young man from North Branch, Minnesota #144 Anson Scheele rode hard and won the Transition class. Raycer Frank was there ’till the end but just could not get by Scheele as Kyle Thome also joined in the mix and the three Arctic Cat riders put on a show for the crowd. Thome would finish third. Going into Deadwood which has a smaller, tighter track this will be a class we will have our eye on.

Next was the Woodies Racing Jr Girls 9-13 class and the rematch we were waiting to see, was going to happen. After winning the inaugural race at Duluth, Inanna Hauger was on the starting line after missing round two of the series. But the riding level of Taven Woodie is fast and intense lately and Saturday was just another day of work for the young lady from Alpine, Wyoming . Taven won both her heat races and finished with a half lap on the rest of the class and grabbed her second win of the season. Makenna Kleiman raced hard all day placing second in the final as well as in both of her heat races. McKaylee Meyerhofer finished strong and landed in the third spot of the national podium. Inanna Hauger qualified third but had a few bobbles in the main and finished fifth.

Racing entry of Eric Downs. Downs has won every heat and final in all three events now this season, leaving the rest of the class wondering how to beat him. Nathan Lavalley raced hard all day with a second in round one, and a first in round two. Nathan placed his Ski-Doo on the box in second place in the final. Andy Pake stayed strong in the final and finished third.

Jr 14-15 and Jr 16-17 classes – Ryley Bester of Frattalone Racing makes it look easy each time he is on the track. Bester won both the Jr. classes and heads into Deadwood with a lot of momentum. Taylor Cole and Reid Runkel topped off the 14-15 podium. And in the 16-17 class ,Carson Allread continues to search for a way around Bester finishing second, and Reid Runkel landed on the podium for second time of the day in third.

Sport Lite 2 – Who doesn’t like Taylor Cole of Plaisted Racing? This kid is a fan favorite for sure. And much to the approval of the Shakopee crowd Cole was on

the top of the podium. It was a fun night for Taylor and the rest of the Plaisted Racing crew. Jordan Wolfe has been putting in the work, racing in all the nationals and Minnesota regionals. And hard work is paying off as Jordan finished in second. Brian Petersen finished in third and completed the Sport Lite 2 podium.

FXR Sport 2 – Eddie Neubauer picked up where he left thing on Friday,, winning both his heat raced. But he could not run down the Polaris of Nickolas Lorenz. Lorenz raced hard and fast to land on the top of the box for his first national win. Neubauer wrapped up his best weekend of the season with a second, and Ingles Performance racer Hunter Patenaude grabbed the third spot to round off the FXR Sport 2 podium. Points leader Yurk had a better day winning both heat races and a respectable fifth in the final.

Corey Davidson open the USXC season with a huge, $13,000 win at the Gerald Dyrdahl Memorial in Gonvick, Minnesota but it has been all Wes Selby and Zach Herfindahl ever since, with the Arctic Cat racers splitting the last four Factory 600

wins. Selby retains a slight seven point advantage as the series now has a few weeks off with the weather-related cancellation of the Winnipeg to Willmar I-500.

Selby (15) and Aaron Christensen (10) have led the charge for Cat and Polaris in the Pro ranks, but there is plenty of competition among the neighboring brands in the semi-pro class as well.
