Norum House ResidentiThe bubble diagrams focused on the functions, circulations, and the relationships be-tween front yard and back yard. The conceptual diagrams were created in three different forms: curvilinear, rectilinear, and irregular, and the paving materials for these designs were stone, wood, and con-crete.

al DesignThe master plan was a combination of three bubble diagrams and concept plans. It focused on an easy ADA access to the front door, keeping some of the existing vegetations, adding a picnic table and chairs & water feature in the backyard, creating a enjoyable view from the kitchen to the backyard, which were based on the client requests. The drive way to the garage was paved by stones which can afford heavy weight, and the backyard patio’s material was wood, which is suitable for easy activities and relaxing.

This project is to describe one English word- Mystery, on a hypothetical 1-acre square site with one plant material and two ground cover materi-als. Based on the definition of mystery- “anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown”, a sequence of spaces formed a cur-vilinear design with varied topography, which will give visitors a serious of view changes and surprises every time they turn a different corner. The tree selection, weeping willow, reinforces the mysterious experience with their long pendulous branches blocking people’s view from see through the whole site.

Rooftop Children Garden Healing The patient population for this rooftop garden are children. Based on this particular population, the design is focused mainly on making all entrances ADA accessible as well as welcoming and child- friendly; providing differentiation of spaces for pre-adolescent/ adolescent groups; providing a comfortable social environment with plenty of places for parents and staff to sit and share the space with children; providing as many options as possible for children to interact with nature through their senses and/ or hands-on activities, including op-portunities for planting and harvesting; providing a range of appropriately scaled, accessible multi-purpose settings for social gathering of different types.

Section Perspective

The section perspective shows more features on this children’s garden. Starting from the left, the tall deciduous tree provides shading for the nearby seats. The sculpture is designed in children’s scale, which allows kids to crawl around. The playhouse’s roof is made of glass which is meant to let people experience an open view even when they are indoor. And at night, the lights will shine out of the house, creating a welcoming, comforting night view. The octopus is also the structure for swing sets, as shown on this perspective, which provides more color and fun for the children.

The wish tree is placed next to the playhouse, so children can hang their wishes or thoughts on the tree. Meanwhile, another child can also leave comments or thoughts under each note. In that way, the wish tree is more like a plant form for the children to communicate with each other when they are fighting against illness.

Bubble Diagram

PerspectiveThis perspective shows one of the many pocket gar-dens on site. As you can see, there are wood benches attached directly to the planters, in order to create a closer relationship between people and nature.

The bubble diagram indicates the traffic relation-ship and function relationship among different parts of the site. The road is mainly provided for pedestrian use but it’s also wide enough for emer-gency vehicle to pass through.

Addressing

Snow Piao [email protected] 509-715-9924

The main goal of this Caldwell Hall redesign is to bring the pathway on the east edge of the Founders Garden (which is on the south side of the site) and planting space together. The con-cept is developed in a 45 angle format, with more seating area and planting space. The plants are used as primary tools for providing spatial definition, screening to buffer noise and sun, and emphasis the interesting focal points. The water fountain on the south side of this property is aimed to create sound attraction, which would potentially draw people going down and spend quality time enjoying the nature, perhaps during classes.

Design For Speed Median

The idea behind this practice is to express yourself with pastel under music, based on the music’s melody, beats, and emotions. The three songs I chose were ‘You raise me up’, ‘Innocent’, and ‘Awesome God’. The graphics show the characters of each song, including the beats, volume changes, by using different colors.

This median design’s form is influenced by the previous music pastel prac-tices. In order to minimize the distraction from the drivers and to make the view clear from both sides, this median is designed in large circles pattern with low perennial plants, so that the plants will not block the view for the drivers.

Oak Grove ConservaSite Inventory & Analysis

The four graphics above show information of existing slope, soil, vegetation, and hydrology of the site. After overlay-ing all these four drawings together, it turns out that the most suitable area for development is east side of the site along with the north and south edge of the site. The middle and middle to the west part of the site is covered by healthy mature trees, which should be preserved for environmental reasons. The pond should also be preserved for its calm, appealing view.

Lots Layout

The site will be developed into a single family housing neighbor-hood. The main focus of laying down the road and the lots is try to minimize the length of the road while maximize the num-ber of lots, in order to make the most profit. Each single family lot has a min. lot size as 8,000 sf, min. lot width as 60’, min. lot depth as 80’, min. front setback as 15’, and side& rear setback as 6’ and 10’. The right of way of the local street is 50’, with a 22’ pavement width and 25mph design speed. Local streets have a 8’ wide sidewalk and 6’wide tree planting strip along each side of the road. Road intersec-tions must be at least 150’ apart between center lines, and the maximum cul de sac length is 800’.

21

Page 22: Snow Piao Landscape Architecture Portfolio

Oak Grove ConservaMaster Plan

The master plan of this conservation subdivision development has 105 sin-gle family lots, with a minimum size of 8,000 sf of each lot. The economical goal is to minimize the road length as well as maximize the number of lots to achieve the biggest profit. The eco-logical goal is to make sure that each lot has direct access into green space. By achieving that, the design gathers the lots along the edge and leave a big open green space in the middle, and preserving as many existing trees on site as possible.

Bubble Diagrams

25

Based on the site inventory information, the three bubble diagrams are created in a vary way to deal with the circulation, existing vegetation preservation, and different uses of the site. There are residential, commercial, and industrial( existing power plan) areas in this design. In order to achieve a harmonious environment of these three parts, vegetation will be used as screens to give each part privacy.

Circulation Plan

Vehicle Route

Pedestrian Route

Master Plan

The circulation plan shows both vehicle route and pedestrian route. The goal of this de-sign is to make the entire site walkable and wheel chair accessible. By achieving that, side walks are provided along the main street; a pedestrian bridge is provided on the south part of the site, crossing the train station plaza; and also, ramps are provided in front of each building. Res

Running Trail

Athens Green Metro is designed as a highly mix-used residen-tial & commercial neighborhood. The site locates off Athens highway and a train rail road which connects to Atlanta, which will provide intense travel flow on regular bases. The entire site is pedestrian friendly and wheel chair accessible. Each apart-ment and single family house has direct access to green space. Besides that, there are open green space for the community to

gather. The core of this design is to create a comfortable and convenient environment for the community to live, work, and play.

The Train Station Plaza is designed to maximize the convenience for both pedestrians and vehicles. The three one way lanes in front of the train station consists of two lanes driveway and one lane for pick up, on which the cars can stop and wait to pick up/ drop off people. The pedestrian bridge above the plaza mainly serves for people who want to get to the rest of the site without interacting with traveling people. The water fountain creates sound attraction for people to stop and enjoy. There are also stairs next to the fountain in case people want to get down to the ground from the bridge.

Running TrailPlan

The green roof on this hotel building is connected with the pedestrian bridge on one side, and a bridge which connects to the running trail on the other side, so that people can get to the west side of the site easily. Considering the limited weight a roof can take, the plants in this design are mostly ornamental grasses, sedum, and turf.

The restaurant is connected with the train station by a pedestrian bridge so that it will provide a easy stop for people who travel in and out of the train station. The green roof on top of the restaurant can be used as a out-door eating area to enjoy your food. It will also provide a pleasant outlook over the site. One side of this green roof is connected with the shopping mall. There is also a ramp connecting the roof , the restaurant, and the ground so that you can get to any part of this area as you want.
