Snow is a masterpiece of God’s creation. “He gives snow like wool; He scatters

the frost like ashes” (Ps 147:16). “Have you entered the treasury of

snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail, Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?” (Job 38:22-23).

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Ps 51:7).

The context of Psalm 51 is David’s sin with Bathsheba.

Hyssop indicated God’s grace and cleansing.“You shall take a bunch of hyssop,

dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning” (Ex 12:22).

Cleansing of a leper (Lev 14:1-9).

David speaks of both his need of grace and his need of cleansing in this Psalm.Grace: “Have mercy upon me, O God,

According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions” (Ps 51:1).

Cleansing: “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin” (Ps 51:2).

Sin stains the soul.Zech 3:1-5.“Save others by snatching them

out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh” (Jude 23, ESV).

The imagery of sin as filthy garments comes from the Old Testament concept of purification. Ps 23:3-4. If we are polluted with sin, we may not stand in

the presence of God. “These are the ones who come out of the great

tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev 7:14).

“Nothing unclean will ever enter it [the New Jerusalem], nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Rev 21:27, ESV).

Only God can make us clean.

We cannot cleanse ourselves. “By grace you have been saved

through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Eph 2:8-9).

“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5, ESV).

If we cannot cleanse ourselves, what can

we do?

One: Understand your need for cleansing.David understands his need for

cleansing. You need cleansing.

Without holiness “no one will see the Lord” (Heb 12:14).

“Outside [the New Jerusalem] are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie” (Rev 22:15).

Page 14: Snow is a masterpiece of God’s creation. “He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes” (Ps 147:16). “Have you entered the treasury of snow,

Examine yourself very, very carefully.“Let a man examine himself, and

so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup” (1 Cor 11:28).

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves” (2 Cor 13:5).

Two: Understand the high price of your sin. The blood of an animal would be on the

hyssop that would be applied to David. We need Jesus’ blood.

“Having now been justified by [Jesus’] blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Rom 5:9).

“You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Pet 1:18-19).

Go back and look at what Jesus did.

Three: Cleanse yourself from sin. But, I thought we couldn’t

cleanse ourselves! No amount of good works can

atone for my sins.Yet, I need to obey Jesus in order

to have His blood applied to my soul. “Save yourselves from this crooked

generation” (Acts 2:40).

Page 17: Snow is a masterpiece of God’s creation. “He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes” (Ps 147:16). “Have you entered the treasury of snow,

We save ourselves by getting into contact with Jesus’ blood at baptism. “When the kindness and the love of God our

Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Tit 3:4-5).

“In [Jesus] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Eph 1:7).

There is only one way to get into Jesus. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on

Christ” (Gal 3:27).

Page 18: Snow is a masterpiece of God’s creation. “He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes” (Ps 147:16). “Have you entered the treasury of snow,

We save ourselves by continuing to walk with Jesus.“If we walk in the light as He is in

the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 Jn 1:7). As long as you walk in the light,

Jesus’ blood is applied to your soul. Are you walking in the light?
