such as homophonic, homographic, heteronymic, homonymic, polysemic, metonymic, graphological, morpho-logical and metaphorical. Feel free to look these up, because we’re not going to defi ne these for you, as we’re going to jump right in and enjoy the pun.

PUNCTIONARYPLEASE

According to Merriam Webster: a pun (noun) is the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound.

Two examples: The delicatessen is sandwiched between two stores. She’s a skillful pilot whose career has really taken off.

Synonyms: wordplay, quibble, quirk, play on words, paronomasia

PUNS UPON A TIMEAncient civilizations even used puns – most notably the Egyptians used them in interpreting dreams.

Literature is fraught with cunning pun-ning. Think William Shakespeare who used the pun to its fullest as another way of pulling his audiences into the story. In Richard III: “Now is the win-ter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son (sun) of York.” In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio says after being fatally wounded: “Ask for me to-morrow, and you shall fi nd me a grave man.”

And the Bible is not without its puns. In Matthew 16.18, Jesus says “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” In the Greek version, the name Peter is Petros, which means stone and the word rock is petra.

Benjamin Franklin, during the signing of the Declaration of Independence, said, “We must all hang together or as-suredly we shall all hang separately.”

In Alice’s Adventures in Won-derland, by Lewis Carroll:“And how many hours a day did you do lessons?” said Alice, in a hurry to change the subject.“Ten hours the fi rst day,” said the Mock Turtle, “nine the next, and so on.” “What a curious plan!” exclaimed Alice. “That’s the reason they’re called les-sons,” the Gryphon remarked: “because they lessen from day to day.”

THE INTERNATIONAL SAVE THE PUN FOUNDATION

Not that the pun was lost, but there is indeed an organization named the IST-PF whose chairman of the bored (his term, not ours) is Norman Gilbert, a fi nancial planner in Ontario, Canada. The organization was founded in 1979 by John Crosbie and boasts a member-ship of 1,600 serious punsters. They

publish a monthly newsletter, appropri-ately titled “The Pundit,” host dinners and get-togethers for punning around with others, as well as hosting the an-nual Pun-Off Championships where they bestow the Punster of the Year Award upon a skilled punmeister. The May, 2011 championships were held in Austin, Texas.

New Yorker John Pollack won the Pun-ster of the Year Award (P.O.T.Y Award) in 2011. Pollack is no ordinary punster and is a true example of how far a pun-ster can go in life. He was a speech-writer for President Bill Clinton, a for-eign correspondent in Spain and has authored three books.

Earlier this year, Pollack published “The Pun Also Rises: How the Hum-ble Pun Revolutionized Language, Changed History and Made Wordplay More Than Some Antics.” This man is serious about the almighty pun and word.

ONE PUNNY EXAMPLE

From http://puns.tribe.net:

The symphony orchestra was perform-ing Beethoven’s Ninth. In the piece, there’s a long passage, about 20 minutes, during which the bass violinists have nothing to do. Rather than sit around that whole time looking stupid, some bassists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door for a quick one.

After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them looked at his watch and said, “Hey! We need to get back!” “No need to panic,” said a fel-low bassist. “I thought we might need some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conductor’s score to-gether with string. It will take him a few minutes to get it untangled.”

A few moments later they stag-gered back to the concert hall and took their places in the orchestra.

About this time, a member of the au-dience noticed the conductor seemed a bit edgy and said as much to her companion. “Well, of course,” said her companion. “Don’t you see? It’s the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded.”

Before the U.S.S.R. changed its • government, there was a com-munist by the name of Rudolph in Moscow. A storm came one day. Rudolph’s wife said, “It’s snowing.” “No, it’s not,” said Rudolph, “it’s raining.” “You’re wrong,” said Ms. Rudolph, “it’s defi nitely snowing.” “How can you argue with me? Don’t for-get: Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear.”

A three-legged dog walks into a • saloon in the Old West. He sidles up to the bar and announces: “I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.”

Evidence has been found that • William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. However, all the league records were unfortu-nately destroyed in a fi re. Thus we’ll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

Back in the 1800s the Tate’s • Watch Company of Massachu-setts wanted to produce other products, and since they already made the cases for watches, they used them to produce compass-es. The new compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California. This, of course, is the origin of the expression “He who has a Tate’s is lost!”

A punster entered a local paper’s pun contest. He sent in ten differ-ent puns, with the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfor-tunately, no pun in ten did.

A hungry lion was roaming through the jungle looking for something to eat. He came across two men: one was sitting under a tree and reading a book; the other was typing away on his typewriter. The lion quickly pounced on the man reading the book and devoured him. Even the king of the jungle knows that read-ers digest and writers cramp.

SNIPPETZ®: THE LOCAL SCOOP

When a child suppresses his or her true personal-ity will, many times, be-

gin to form a false personality that is seen as acceptable. This can lead to an angry adolescent who wants to be original and does not know how or what that would look like. How can Life Energy Flow Tai Yi assist a person who wants to identify what is their authentic nature so that he or she can express it without fear?

Life Energy Flow Tai Yi means su-preme movement or balance. When one is in a state of complete bal-ance, joy and passion is the result. When a person suppresses expres-sion of any kind, it creates an im-balance. That imbalance turns into depression and/or anger.

Tai Yi is an ancient form of healing modality that works with the mind, body, and emotions. When a per-son desires to receive assistance on healing an issue, Tai Yi can greatly benefi t. A qualifi ed practitioner will choose the most appropriate treat-ment at the time for the individual. In this case, for the individual who has suppressed his or her true per-sonality, the treatment Sea Mist would benefi t.

LIFE ENERGYFLOW -TAI YI:

SEEING WHAT IS THERE(Part 2 of 2)

The reason Tai Yi works effec-tively with people is that it works specifi cally with the meridians that are being affected by painful choic-es, such as suppression. Sea Mist works specifi cally with the merid-ians that have been suppressed. As a result of those meridians being suppressed, the person becomes un-clear about the true issues and cre-ates a depression, frustration, anger, and anxiety.

In the case of Sea Mist, specifi c pressure points are placed in ar-eas aligned with the emotional and mental meridians of the body. This can be seen as similar to the physical body meridians, which acupuncture utilizes. The pressure points, along with Universal Energy, work with the meridians to begin unblocking them to allow the person to uncover the true issue that has been unseen. It is then imperative that the person continue working on understanding and healing that issue to continue the benefi t of the treatment. The continued work leads to a release or healing of depression, anger, and anxiety.

Tai Yi assists people to heal; it is never ‘fi x all’ type of modality. Just as massage is not a ‘fi x all’, but rather a person needs to continue stretching the muscles. When a per-son takes a high cholesterol medi-cation, it is not a ‘fi x all’, but rather the person needs to modify his or her diet and exercise. Tai Yi can and does assist a person to heal when the person receiving the treatment continues healing the issue that led to the depressive, angry, or anxious symptoms.

• It was French Renaissance essay-ist Michel de Montaigne who made the following sage observation: “Nothing is so fi rmly believed as what is least known.”

• If someone called you a “mumpsi-mus,” would you be fl attered or insulted? It seems that the appro-priate reaction would be to take of-fense. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a mumpsimus is “a stubborn person who insists on making an error in spite of be-ing shown that it is wrong.”

• The English language is unique in the number of collective nouns it possesses. For instance, a group of frogs is known as an “army” and a group of crows is called a “murder.” We have a “shrewdness” of apes, a “wisdom” of wombats, a “congregation” of crocodiles, a “smack” of jellyfi sh, a “wiggle”

of worms, a “crash” of rhinocer-oses, a “waddle” of penguins and a “scourge” of mosquitoes, to name a few. Geese fl ock together in “gaggles,” unless they’re in fl ight, in which case they are collectively known as a “skein.”

• In the Baltic region, it’s tradition-al for a bride to wear black.

• You’ve probably never heard of Harvey Lowe, but in the 1930s he enjoyed a certain amount of notori-ety; in 1934 he won the fi rst World Yo-Yo Contest. Now that you know who he is, can you imagine what he had in common with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and notoriously fl amboyant entertainer Liberace? It turns out that all three took out insurance policies on their hands.

• If you’re like 20 percent of the re-spondents in a recent poll, you fi nd it embarrassing to order tap water when you’re in a restaurant.

• On Nov. 10, 1903, Mary Anderson re-ceives patent No. 743,801 for her “window cleaning device for electric cars and other vehicles to remove snow, ice or sleet from the window.” Anderson tried to sell it to a Canadian manufacturing fi rm, but the com-pany said the device had no practical value.

• On Nov. 11, 1921, three years after the end of World War I, the Tomb of the Unknowns is dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia when an unknown American sol-dier is buried. A 2-inch layer of soil brought from France was placed below the coffi n so that the soldier might rest forever atop the earth on which he died.

• On Nov. 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows

FREEFLU SHOTSQuite a few communities are of-

fering free fl u shots, more so than in recent years. For those of us who don’t yet have Medicare, or have an insurance plan that won’t pay for a shot, these free clinics can be a big help.

Ask about free shots at work, senior centers, local health departments and home health aide groups, at the hospital, town hall and local col-lege. Go online to google.com and put “free fl u shot” in the search box, along with the name of your town.Even if you can’t fi nd a free shot this year, get one if your doctor thinks you should have it.

To fi nd a fl u shot online, go fi rst to www.fl u.gov and scroll down the right side to Flu Vaccine Find-er, and put in your ZIP code. Also check www.INeedAFluShot.org and www.fi ndafl ushot.com.

If you’re age 65 or older, ask your doctor if you should have the extra-strength shot for seniors. If you want to keep tabs on the spread of fl u this winter, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website (www.cdc.gov/fl u) with maps, information on preven-tion and more. Be sure to read the section on How Flu Spreads. Did you know that someone 6 feet away can spread it to others by coughing or sneezing?

The vaccines this year include an in-fl uenza A (H1N1) virus, an infl uen-za A (H3N2) virus and an infl uenza B virus, so keep your hand sanitizer ready. Use the wipes provided at the grocery store on the shopping cart handle before you even touch it. Learn not to touch your face with your hands.

Remember, it takes a few weeks for the vaccine to become affective.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My moth-er is in her early 70s. She has been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD. She had a bronchoscopic exam to remove a mucus plug. She was a very heavy smoker. She still smokes. She thinks her kids don’t know, but we have seen the evidence. She is on oxygen. Her doctor thinks she has quit. What does this do to her life expectancy? How long can she live this way? -- J.S.

ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, is two illnesses: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is a harmful stretching and destruction of the mil-lions of air sacs found in the lungs. Through those delicate structures, oxygen reaches the blood. When they are damaged, a person cannot get enough oxygen and becomes breathless on even slight exertion. Chronic bronchitis is infl ammation of the air passageways, the bronchi. They fi ll with thick, pus-fi lled globs of phlegm. Air cannot pass through them. A cough that produces of sticky, tenacious sputum is its chief sign.Cigarette smoking is the major cause

of COPD, but not the only one. It’s hard to watch people ruin their own bodies and hasten death. That’s what your mother is doing. Tell her that the most important treatment for COPD is total abstinence from smoking. Abstinence allows lungs to recover from the dam-age done from inhaling cigarette smoke. It doesn’t achieve a complete reversal overnight. It does prolong

life. What does this do to her life expectancy? It shortens it. How long can she live? That can’t be foretold. Unequivo-

cally, she will live longer and enjoy her life more if she never lights up again. COPD is a major problem and the fourth-leading cause of death. The COPD booklet explains its causes and treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 601W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have ar-thritis. Every time it rains, my pain seems to increase. I attend the Ar-thritis Foundation’s exercise classes, and we all have the same response to rainy weather. We’re wondering if this is due to increased humidity, low barometric pressure or just an “old wives’ tale.” -- E.S.

ANSWER: A drop in barometric pressure along with an increase in humidity has been demonstrated to cause a fl are of arthritis. It’s the exact set of conditions that happen prior to a storm. Some arthritics experience more joint pain when temperature drops.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would appreciate reading your comments on the current rumor that micro-waved food loses all nutritional val-ue. -- C.T.

ANSWER: That’s not a current ru-mor. It’s a piece of misinformation that has been circulating since mi-crowave ovens appeared on the mar-ket.It’s not true. Microwaving preserves vitamins and minerals better than al-most any other method of cooking. Foods lose some of their nutritional

value when they are boiled in lots of water; the water draws out some vi-tamins. Little water is used in micro-wave cooking.

REEL IN INFLAMMATIONHelp control tissue-damaging infl ammatory processes with a bit of fi sh oil. Chronic infl ammation of body tissues may play a role in the pathology of many diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. However, a new study reveals omega-3 fatty acids in fi sh oil may help reduce infl ammation. Seek out a serving of oily fi sh such as salmon or tuna each week.

RELAXING TIGHT SHOULDERS

Tight shoulders are considered the ‘universal stress point’ in nutrition. It can get to the point

where a person can’t easily raise their arms above their head. Many people think that is normal and miss out on getting range of motion restored.

Here are several tips we have found work for Forest and many of the pa-tients I’ve had in the clinic.

OMEGA 3SFew people realize that tight shoulders and ribs are due to a nutritional defi -ciency of Omega 3s (the good fats - fl ax and fi sh oils). In addition, to tight shoulders, people with this defi ciency often have a history of canker sores,

muscle weakness, dry skin, loss of hair and fi nd themselves to be slow morn-ing starters. Does any of that sound familiar?

Recommendation: The quickest way to restore your Omega 3 supply is through a daily intake of fl ax or fi sh oil. My favorite is Barlean’s Omega Swirl. It tastes delicious, is easy to digest and much more bio-available for the body. You can fi nd it in your local health food store (i.e., Vitamin Cottage) or on our website at www.lifestyleforhealth.com.

EXERCISEMany exercises focus on the shoul-ders. One of the easiest ones you can do simply requires a ‘corner’ – in your shower, a hallway, etc. Find a corner, place your palms shoulder-height on the walls, feet about 3-feet from the corner. Now do a simple pressing to-

wards the corner as if you were doing a push-up. This stretches the chest open, moves the shoulder blades together and helps open up the shoulders. This is a great way to relax after doing a lot of computer work or sitting.

MUSCLE ACTIVATION THERAPY (MAT)

We had the privilege of meeting a local specialist, Brad Carlosn, who works with professional athletes and normal people like us! (you can connect with Brad at 719-338-2100 or his website www.activeedgemat.com)

Forest had had a tight right shoulder for 26+ years. He saw Brad for one ap-pointment and had a release of shoul-der motion that allowed him to easily

reach his arm above his head. Forest had done a lot of other work, takes Omega 3s, exercises, but couldn’t re-store full range of motion. Sometimes it is fi nding just the right resource that your body needs to get the next level of results.

One of the joys of pursuing health is that when you are ready for another breakthrough, the options show up. We see that on a regular basis and are enjoying more health and fi tness than ever before. Join us on our next 90 Day Challenge by checking us out at www.lifestyleforhealth.com!

Aerials Gymnastics EastJanuary 22, 2012 2PM-3PM drop off,

3:30 swapping beginsPeace. Love. Swap. is a one of a kind organization that produces ongoing kid’s swaps. The swaps are for local eco/budget minded parents to get together and recycle (exchange) their kid’s stuff (ages 0-14 and maternity). After the swaps, I do-nate the leftovers to local charities and families in need. You can get more info, read our mission statement & see what moms are saying at: http://peaceloveswaps/colorado-springs/ The parents that attend our swaps are the parents that live in your community ~ and in order to make the swaps a success, we need as many parents to participate as possible. Kids grow out of their stuff so fast & always need new stuff, & in this economic climate, what better way to get “new” stuff than to swap with other families. That is what peace. love. swap is all about. For only $5, you take as much stuff as you need - period. Need a pack n play? done. Clothes for all three of your kids? done. Books, toys, shoes, swings.. we have that - and it’s all only $5. The only rule? Take only what you need, and bring it back when you are done. That’s all we ask. peace. love. swap is truly a win- win for everyone involved. It’s green, fun, philanthropic & catching on fast! THE TREASURE CHEST

TWO VERY IMPORTANT

WORDSNicholas James Yanez

There was a Haunting in Palm-er Lake. See last week, peo-ple dressed up as witches and

goblins, and zombies and Hood-lums. They screamed and scared and bled and fed on humans. They took your money and made you run. They terrifi ed your children, and wouldn’t see your pets. They were the reason you couldn’t sleep at night, they were the shiver to your fright.

The week before that, there was a construction zone. There was plas-tic paper, wood, and power tools. There was a blank room and a big idea. There were dreamers and schemers and together they com-bined their thoughts. There were good intentions and bad trials, but in the end there was a resolution. In the end there was a home for the wicked.

The week before the week before that, there was a goal. Paper and pencils jotted the initial thoughts, and few proposals were accepted.

There was a group of leaders com-ing together. They met and, without a fret, came to a conclusion. They would haunt the Tri-lakes citizens, giving those screams and chills through the night.

Several months before that, there was a celebration! There was red and white and blue. There was good barbeque. There were children and teens, and adults of course. There were trucks and bikes and fries and drinks. There were fi reworks. There was a celebration of American Inde-pendence. It was the 4th of July, and Palmer Lake pulled it off again.

So in response to another great Inde-pendence Day Celebration, a com-mittee of business owners known as the ‘2012 Palmer Lake Fireworks Committee’ got together and started from scratch.

It was time again to raise money, to be able to continue the great tradi-tion of Palmer Lake’s greatest fes-tival. So they created a Haunted House at Pinz Bowling Center to raise money for the future event. It did just that.

HOLIDAYS!If you haven’t already, you will soon be pull-

ing out your favorite holiday dessert recipes. And if you’re like most of us, some of these

favorites will be heavy in fat, sugar and calories. Family favorites such as pies, cookies, quick breads and cakes can be improved and made more healthful -- with just a few minor changes.

In baked products, you usually can decrease the amount of shortening, butter or cooking oil by one-third and still have a good result. If the rec-ipe calls for 1 cup of butter, you would use 2/3 cup. In cakes and quick breads, make sure you have 2 tablespoons of fat in the recipe for every cup of fl our. Another option for cakes and quick breads is to substitute unsweetened applesauce for half of the fat. Just remember that every time you add one less tablespoon of fat, you save 100 calories in your recipe.

You also can decrease sugar by one-third in most recipes, or use a sugar substitute, and still have a good-tasting product. Keep in mind that for cakes and cookies, you need to have 1/2 cup of sugar for every cup of fl our. For quick breads and muffi ns, you need to have at least 1 tablespoon of sugar for every cup of fl our. Keep in mind that while 1 tablespoon of sugar per cup of fl our will help the muffi ns brown nicely, they will not be sweet. They will not be as moist either. Sugar ac-tually holds moisture, so less sugar can make for a drier product.

To add nutrients and fi ber, substitute whole-grain fl our for all-purpose fl our in recipes. You usual-ly can replace one-fourth to one-half of the all-purpose fl our with whole grain. Be creative with your whole grains. Make you own oat fl our by putting oats in the blender to grind to fl our. You also can blend bran cereal to make fl our. Both oat and bran fl our can replace one-quarter of the all-purpose fl our in a recipe.

This Streusel-Topped Pumpkin Pie is a lighter version of traditional holiday pumpkin pie.

STREUSEL-TOPPED PUMPKIN PIE

Filling:2 large eggs 1 (15-ounce) can unsweetened pumpkin 1 (14-ounce) can fat-free sweetened condensed milk 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

2. To prepare crust: Coat a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray. Roll dough to an 11-inch circle. Fit the dough into the prepared pie plan. Fold edges under and press with a fork around the edge.

3. To prepare fi lling, whisk the eggs lightly for 1 minute. Add in pump-kin and condensed milk and stir to com-bine. Add the cinna-mon, allspice, salt, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Pour the fi ll-ing into the prepared crust.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2” (PG-13) -- The forces of evil are in full swing, and it’s up to Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his wizard friends to bring the fi nal confrontation to Voldemort and save the world. Seeds planted long ago come to full fruition, as the children cast in the original fi lms have all grown into tal-ented performers, capable of handling the more intense drama of the fi nal fi lms. What you probably saw in the previews

was a lot of dirt-stained youths looking serious spliced with darkened images of computer-generated destruction. While this is indicative of the cataclysmic action in the movie, it leaves out the emotional climaxes in the story -- it’s not all gloom and lightning bolts.“Life in a Day” (PG-13) -- If YouTube and the “It’s a Small World After All” ride could be combined into a motion picture, it would this jumbled, yet touching collective documentary. Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald, more than 4,500 hours of footage from people around the world all going about their lives on the same day is assembled into a single movie about living on Earth. It’s grand in scope and perhaps a little gim-micky, but there is something -- however shallow or profound -- to see here. Specifi c segments will strike a chord while others will simply bore. However, it’s the contrast

between segments and the heartwarming similarities between different lives that gives the documentary its true energy.

DOGS OF THE WEEK“The Change-Up” (R) -- This here is a body-swap comedy that will certainly go down as one of the many unpleasant and forgettable body-swap comedies. Jason Bateman plays a guy with a family and re-sponsibilities; Ryan Reynolds is a swing-ing bachelor who still feels unfulfi lled. The two slightly different pals swap lives through the supernatural forces of dull cin-ematic cliches. The novelty of this movie is that it has a perfect display of Hollywood’s new favor-ite failure -- the no-laugh gross-out gag. It’s been an escalating trend that gross hu-mor has a place in all adult comedies. This means that the audience can see a baby spray fecal matter all over a protagonist before the opening credits, and thus have

low expectations secured throughout the remainder of the experience.“Atlas Shrugged: Part 1” (PG-13) -- Author Ayn Rand’s novel about powerful thinkers going against the grain makes it to the big-screen. Too bad it has the looks of a made-for-TV affair. With a “no talent, no problem” cast and amateurish direction, any philosophical content could be missed between eye-rolls. The fi lm portends to be the fi rst in a trilogy, but it could be getting ahead of itself in that regard.

CHILDIDENTITY

THEFTMore than 8 million people are vic-timized by identity theft each year. Just when you thought you’d cov-ered all the bases in protecting your-self, thieves have come up with a new target that most families don’t think about: children.

According to a news release from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, more than half of child identity-theft victims are under the age of 12. A 9-year-old was in debt collection. The largest debt was nearly three-quarters of a million dollars. A 2-year-old was in bank-ruptcy. And the youngest victim was 5 months old.

As usual, it begins with the Social Security number. It will be years before a child applies for credit, or goes to college or needs any govern-ment benefi ts, so the theft might not be noticed.

Your child might be a victim of identity theft if you receive bills in your child’s name, or tax papers, traffi c tickets or lien notices, or if your child can’t get a drivers license because the number is already being

used. A pre-approved credit-card of-fer isn’t necessarily a red fl ag unless accompanied by other indications. (Unless you have strong reason to suspect there’s been identity theft, don’t check your child’s credit, as this opens a credit report.)

Go to the Identity Theft Resource Center (www.idtheftcenter.org) and put “child” in the search box. Look for Fact Sheet 120. (Don’t miss Fact Sheet 120B -- A Guide for Parents.) According to the Identity Theft Re-source Center, here are some ways to keep your child safe from identity theft:

• If you open a bank account with a child, opt out of all marketing lists.

• Object to giving your child’s Social Security number when registering for school. It might be optional, or there might be a way to protect the number. Ask hard questions.

• At the doctor’s offi ce, ask questions about how the information is to be safeguarded.

• When your teen begins to drive, opt for the random number instead of Social Security number for the li-cense.

• When you teen fi lls out job appli-cations, teach him or her to leave the Social Security number blank. A would-be employer doesn’t need that information. If your child is actually hired, only the bookkeeper who fi lls out W-2 forms at the end of the year needs the information, not a shift su-pervisor in a burger place.

David Uffi ngton regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

If you are thinking about getting a divorce or legal separation and you are concerned about whether the other party will provide you with fi nancial information or how much information you’re going to have to provide to the other party, you must understand that Court rules require mandatory fi nancial disclosure. As a practical matter, this means that you cannot hide or fail to disclose information regarding your fi nancial situation.

Each party has an affi rmative obligation to provide the other party with a sworn fi nancial statement that includes all the information regarding your accounts and expenses. You also have an affi rmative obligation to provide supporting information such as income documentation, tax returns, credit card statements, and bank and fi nancial account information. “Affi rmative obligation” means that you are required to provide the information without the other party having to ask for it. The Court will require that you exchange the mandatory fi nancial disclosures prior to the initial status conference, that usually is scheduled within 40 days of the petition being fi led.

You are under a continuing duty to supplement or amend your fi nancial disclosures in a timely manner. If, for example, your income changes after you have provided your mandatory disclosures, you have to inform the other party of the change and provide documentation as well.

It is important to note that the parties are not limited to the information covered by the mandatory disclosure requirement. The parties are free to request additional information regarding the other party’s fi nancial situation. For example, parties commonly request bank and fi nancial account information covering years prior to fi ling the petition.

What happens if you fail to provide the mandatory fi nancial disclosures? If you fail to provide the information and you have the ability to obtain it, the Court will impose appropriate sanctions. Don’t even think about trying to hide any assets. The other party will eventually discover it, your credibility will be irreparably damaged, and your case will suffer.

Remember that in the marriage zone, the rules require that the parties and the Court have the best fi nancial information available in order that the parties and the Court can make the best decisions possible based on that information.
