SOUTHERN NEVADA CHAPTER, INC #2735
Here it is June already and you know that means, it is time for our Southern Nevada H.O.G. picnic. So this
month instead of going to the dealership on the 14th for our general membership meeting we are going to Mt
Crest Park at Lone Mountain and Durango. Unlike our meetings, the picnic will start at 6pm. There will be a
little bit of business, like drawings and info for upcoming events. But mostly food and fun! A few of the dealer-
ships staff will be there to serve up the food. Some of them you might know and the ones you might not, so in-
troduce yourself. Let them know how much we appreciate all they do for us.
There is a big day at Red Rock Harley Davidson on the fourth. The Saints & Sinners Poker Run starts in the
morning, then Bike Night from 4:00 to 8:00 in the afternoon. A big Thank You for all the members who volun-
teered to help at the stops and registration.
The 12th we are doing a breakfast ride to Muddy River. Then on Saturday the 18th is a lunch ride to Seligman
Arizona. This is a nice ride down Route 66. There are three restaurants there to choose from. I am going to the
Snow Cap for a chocolate Malt. On the 24th-25th is the Panquitch Valley Balloon Rally overnighter. Some of
us are leaving on Friday and the rest on Saturday. If you have never been to a Balloon Rally you should go and
see this. They do a night glow on Saturday night and a mass ascension in the morning. It is really cool.
We had to cancel a couple of rides due to weather this year. It is not that we won’t ride in the rain. It is more of a
safety concern. The rain here is not like the rain in other parts of the country. We have flash floods, standing
water a lot of debris washing out on the roads. Plus, the streets in the valley get really slick when wet. It is just
not safe to take a group of riders out in any of these conditions.
The Road Captains Choice ride last month was a great ride. The leave location was ISK. Everyone thought we
were heading North, but no, we went down through town, and on to Kingman where we stopped for gas. Then
along Route 66 to the Grand Canyon Caverns. A bunch of us took the 45-minute tour of the cavern. Then we
had lunch at the Cavern Inn. Pretty good Jalapeno Cheese Burger, I had there! Our waiter, cashier, and maybe
even the cook, was fast, and the food was good. Then on to Golden Valley for the next gas stop. I put a couple
dollars in the Arizona State Retirement fund there also. (If you are reading this, it means I am still working).
The last leg was through Laughlin and on to Rail Road Pass where we said good byes. The bug splat put on by
the LOH was a lot of fun. We would check everyone’s sticker at each stop. At the end of the ride it was Jerry
Allred that was the winner..
Remember when you wear your H.O.G. vest you not only represent Southern Nevada HOG. But also the Dealer-
ship and the Motor Company. So wear it with pride….
RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN.
Dirk
Let me start by thanking our road captains for allowing me to have the opportunity resume my position on our SNHOG road captain team.
I would like to share a safety tip first. Harley Davidson engineers put mirrors on all or their motorcycles including the ones we own. The mirrors are on our rides for a reason, and that’s to use them often. We should always check our mirrors often to ensure we know where everyone is around us. If you can see a rider’s face in their mirror when riding staggered on either side of you means that they can see you too.
Don’t rely on mirrors when changing lanes, use head checks too. This will ensure the lane you are enter-ing is clear. “Ride your own ride.” Always remember to check your mirrors when you are stopped, either at a stop sign or a signal light, to ensure that you are aware of the location of other vehicles behind you or any danger that might be approaching from the rear. So remember to check your mirrors often so that we all may have a safe ride.
Our road captain team works very hard to make every ride safe as well as fun, from the 10 bike ride to the 50 bike ride. Every ride is made safe. The road captains train hard on a constant basis so they can be pre-pared for anything that may come up on a ride. When the road captains direct riders to do something it’s for a good reason, usually for safety concerns. There is a lot of thought and hard work put into ride prepa-ration. This includes routes, road conditions, weather, traffic patterns, and much more. The road captains travel on the route for the ride prior to sending the group out. This is all done for the safety of the chapter members. As all riders should be the road captains stay sharp, ride smart, and are familiar with the route.
There is a lot to be said of the road captain training process. The trainees are given a handbook that is a great tool to get them ready for their new position in SNHOG RC team. The handbook is not to be con-fused with common sense; it’s a tool to help us understand the duties of the different positions as road captains. Trainees are evaluated on every ride at different positions. They must be signed off at every po-sition to earn their rope. The road captains work very hard at making sure each trainee has the opportunity to be evaluated and signed off at each position. As it was put to me when I first signed up for RC training, “every chapter member’s life is in the road captain’s hands” so you see, it’s a huge responsibility for the road captains. They train hard and they expect quality and safety from each of the road captains. We must not ever take for granted what the road captains do for all of the SNHOG chapter members for EVERY ride. The road captains make sure every ride is enjoyable while keeping the chapter rides safe.

just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round!
Although Donna, Roland, and Cinda are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our
events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to [email protected] and they’ll get added to the
gallery. The name and date of the event must be included in the email.
Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at http://www.snhoglv.com
