FULL COLOUR DIGITAL PRINTING EXPLAINED

Full Colour Printing onto Polymers has historically been restricted to CMYK Pad Printing – a plate system to create colour from the makeup of the CMYK spectrum. However, the traditional plate system is highly restrictive and loaded with cost.

Developments in CMYK Ink Jet technology revolutionised full colour printing utilising a UV curing process and UV Inks to deliver an output that far exceeds that of the CMYK Plate System. CMYK Ink Jet technology is so accurate, it can place a single droplet of ink, point 1 of a millimetre, directly on top of another; this is how millions of shades of colour can be achieved in one print. As full colour digital technology utilises UV light to cure the print during the process, there is no need to use an over laminate or allow for drying time.

WHAT IS FULL COLOUR DIGITAL PRINTING? In its broadest sense, full colour digital printing enables photorealistic images to be printed directly onto the surface of a product without the use of transfers or sublimation processes. A highly detailed Brand Logo or Corporate Identity can be applied to a range of substrates, therefore opening the potential to utilise promotional merchandise as a tool with which to deliver a truly integrated campaign message to your target audience.

Full Colour Digital Printing is also referred to as 4 Colour Digital Printing Process or CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black being the four ink colours used in the process. ARTWORK SPECIFICATION FOR FULL COLOUR DIGITAL PRINTINGPhotographic Images:When supplying us with your digital artwork we can print TIFF, Photoshop EPS, PSD, High Resolution JPEG, and Photoshop PDF formats. Images should be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) minimum / 600 dpi (dots per inch) preferred image resolution as the higher the resolution size of your original image (dots per inch) the better the final printed results will be.

Fonts:All fonts used within your artwork must be converted to outlines/paths (when created within Adobe Illustrator) or fonts must be rasterised (when created in Adobe Photoshop). Any issues/faults regarding the fonts may result in a delay to your order.

Digital Printing on Coloured Products:To achieve full colour digital printing on to coloured products (such as a coloured mint card), a white base layer is applied to the product before the full colour print. This is usually created from the vector artwork file supplied, and will be done free of charge by our Artwork Team, If a vector artwork/base is not supplied, an additional charge may be incurred, subject to sight of artwork.

Colour:As our print process is CMYK, we recommend laying out documents in CMYK colours (we will also accept RGB files, but may not be an exact colour match when converted to CMYK).

Pantone colours cannot be colour-matched with digital printing, all Pantone colours used will be converted to CMYK process before printing and will therefore not be an accurate match of the PMS required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQsWhat is a Vector graphic?A vector graphic is made up of lines and curves, allowing it to be scaled up or down without loss of quality. An EPS file is an example of a vector file format. NOTE: Not all EPS files are vector graphics. Adobe Photoshop also saves raster graphics in EPS format. If you open a vector file in Photoshop and save it, it will become a raster graphic.

What is a Raster graphic or Bitmap?A raster graphic or bitmap is made up of patterns of picture elements, called pixels, these are the blocks you see when you zoom into a digital image too far. A JPEG or TIFF file is an example of a raster/bitmap file format.

When a raster/bitmap file is scaled up or enlarged, it will produce a poor quality image. When printing bitmap files, the image reproduces exactly as it is stored - in other words, it is resolution dependent. If the original file is 150dpi, opening the file into software (such as Photoshop) and up-scaling the resolution to 300dpi does not make the image now 300dpi.

What is High Resolution/Low Resolution?In digital/electronic imaging the measurement of printout quality for raster images is expressed as the number of dots per inch (dpi). Image resolution typically ranges from 72 dpi for screen viewing (low-res) to 720 to 1800+ dpi for professional printing (high-res).Generally the higher the resolution, the higher the quality of the output, and the larger the file size. If you have a low resolution image, or you “stretch” a small raster image into a larger size, the image will print with jagged edges and appear pixelated. Resolution and size are different, but proportional. For example, a 70 x 70 mm image at 300 dpi resolution will appear to be the same quality as a 140 x 140mm image at 150 dpi. Every time you increase the measurements of a raster file, the resolution decreases accordingly.

NOTE: Once the resolution of a raster file is reduced it cannot be restored. Images from the Internet or any kind of web site are usually 72 dpi GIF, JPEG or PNG files, which cannot be reproduced in large format printing due to the poor quality. Colour and resolution, and ultimately quality are compromised from these low resolution images to allow rapid transfer through the Internet.
