WE’VE RECEIVED A BUNCH OF NEW EQUIPMENT, SO SEE OUR FRONT DESK FOR ALL OF THE NEW ACTIVITIES!!!

SEPTEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: (LOA’s are provided within 5 days; these are open to ALL active duty service members, dependents, DoD! Transportation provided to active duty, with the priority given to single/unaccompanied active duty service members).

Multiple Sclerosis Society Bike Event Volunteering (9/8, 9/9 and 9/10). Assist the MS Society with their Bike Benefit. Assist with set-up, distribution of snacks and water, and event break down. Meet at the Roadhouse:

o 9/8: 1115; return at 1830 o 9/9: 0515; return at 1230 o 9/10: 0515; return at 1230

Veterans Stand Down (9/8 and 9/9): Help with this outstanding event which helps our local, disabled, homeless Veterans with food, housing, haircuts and many more services!!! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0730; will return at 1530. Appropriate civilian attire. Colors for Cancer (9/30): Help out with this great color run at Creekside elementary! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0600; will return around 1000. Autocross (9/16 and 9/17). Assist with set-up, tear down, course operations, event monitoring (and you will get to ride with SCCA instructors). Sept 16 (0630-17) and/or Sept 17 (0630-17). Beach Clean-Up with the Wild Ponies (9/22) Enjoy the wild ponies and help clean up the beaches and marshes of the Rachel Carson Reserve Island! Please wear tennis shoes or boots, long pants, and bring a snack or bagged lunch (water will be provided). Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return at 1230. Tryon Palace Piggin’ and Grinnin’ Bluegrass Concert Volunteering (9/2; POV only). Assist with a variety of times and concert activities! Please see our SMP website for a full list of details and times. Ft Macon Beach Clean-Up (9/30). Assist with cleaning up Ft. Macon Beach and Trails! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1500. Please bring sunscreen, closed toed shoes, hat, bagged lunch, and water source. Tryon Palace Garden Blitz Days (9/6, 9/13, 9/20, and 9/27; POV only). Assist the Tryon Palace with raking, gardening, and mowing. POV only. Meet at Tryon Palace (0830 to 1130 and/or 1300-1600). Please bring gloves, sunscreen, water source, and bug spray. Please see the SMP front desk if you would like to borrow work gloves. Additional registration details on our website! Veteran’s Organic Garden Volunteering in New Bern (Saturdays 9/2 and 9/23; Friday 9/15). We will be assisting the Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Gardens with a variety of construction and planting projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800. Will return at 1300. Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required. Volunteer with a Veterans’ Retirement Community – Carteret House (every Monday): Bond with Veterans and swap stories at one of our local retirement communities. Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. (Please note that 9/4 is POV). Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday): Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Animal Shelter (every Saturday): Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700. WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer! Other September and October Volunteer Opportunities will continue to be posted on our website as we receive them, so make sure you check our website if you’d like to participate in additional opportunities!

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL EVENTS:

SMP Council Meeting (9/21 at 1430 at the Roadhouse): ALL ARE WELCOME!!! SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL initiatives. UFC FIGHT NIGHT (9/9) UFC 215 Prelims kick-off at 2000; Main fight starts at 2200. Free! Autocross (9/16 and 9/17). Pre-registration required online at www.motorsportsreg.com by midnight 9/10. Authorized patrons can also register day of, with a $10 late fee. OPEN TO ALL (military, retired, dependents, DoD, and properly vetted civilians). Volunteer opportunities available both days. Roaring 20’s Prohibition Party and FOOD (9/14 at 1930). Rock Thursday night at the Roadhouse with free pizza, wings, and sodas! Poker Tournaments (9/12) at 2000. Pool Tournaments (9/13 and 9/26) at 2000. Musical Bingo (9/19) at 2030. Canvas and Cork (9/20) at 2000. Trivia Night (9/27) at 2030. Cards Against Humanity Night (9/23) at 1930. Fridays! Karaoke!! Starts at 1730. Check website for updates Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. FREE SMP Golf Clinics (every Wednesday): Have fun while learning golf fundamentals or work on your existing technique! All range balls and equipment will be provided. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1645, or directly at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course at 1700. Clinic is one hour.

Please note that you will need to specify that you are with Cherry Point SMP in the notes section when you enroll. You can also request to be placed on the same boat as another service member under the notes section. Busch Gardens (9/16 and 10/21) $20/pp. Enjoy Busch Gardens Theme Park with SMP!! Trip price includes transportation. Register at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure (252-466-2197). Deadline to register is 9/11/17 for September trip and 10/16/17 for October trip. US National White Water Center Overnight Trip (10/7/17 – 10/8/17). $133/pp. Price includes transportation, lodging, and mountain climbing, zip line, and white water rafting! Deadline to register is 9/15/17 at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure (252-466-2197). Bahamas Cruise (departure date is 2/16/18). Enjoy five days in the Bahamas! Price is $680/pp for interior cabin and $748/pp for ocean view cabin. Register at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure (252-466-2197). Myrtle Beach Trip (9/23/17 – 9/24/17). $145/pp. Price includes transportation and lodging. Enjoy Myrtle Beach and Broadway at the Beach! SMP and DEVIL DOG DARE (FREE!). SMP has received a number of spots for Devil Dog Dare, to include PAINTBALL. Two packages available! o The “Fun” Package consists of the Zipline, Drop Zone, and Paintball (includes gear and air with 300 paintballs. Lunch and beverages included! (0700-1430).
