WE’VE RECEIVED A BUNCH OF NEW EQUIPMENT, SO SEE OUR FRONT DESK FOR ALL OF THE NEW ACTIVITIES!!! JANUARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: (LOA’s are provided within 5 days; these are open to ALL active duty service members, dependents, DoD! Transportation provided to active duty, with the priority given to single/unaccompanied active duty service members), unless specified otherwise.

WE UPDATE OUR WEBSITE EVERY FEW DAYS WITH ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE NOT ON THIS CALENDAR! Veteran’s Organic Garden Volunteering in New Bern (Saturdays 1/13 and 1/27 and Friday 1/19 ). We will be assisting the Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Gardens with a variety of construction and planting projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800. Will return by 1230. Habitat for Humanity (1/9, 1/16, 1/23, and 1/30). Assist with Habitat’s newest build in New Bern. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return around 1330. Please bring bagged lunch and water source. Please wear closed toed shoes, and weather appropriate civilian attire. Red Cross Fire Alarm Installation (1/20). Assist our local community with installing fire alarms! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1630. Camp Corral (1/27): Volunteer to help out our families with Fallen Heroes and Wounded Warriors. Food and beverages are included. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1400. Croatan National Forest Volunteering (1/27)! Assist the Forestry Service with a variety of outdoor projects in support of the Croatan National Forest. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return around 1630. Please wear closed toed shoes/boots and weather appropriate civilian attire. Tryon Palace Opportunities (ongoing). Please see our website for special and ongoing Tryon Palace opportunities; preregistration is required for all Tryon events! Here are some upcoming events:

o Front Gate Greeters (everyday). o Academy Musuem (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) o Lumbee Tribe Cultural Performance (1/20) o WinterFeast: Oysters, Brews, and Comfort Foods (1/26) o Duffy Gallery Exhibit (“Uncommon Chairs” through 1/7 and “Twin Rivers Quilters Guild Exhibition” (1/20 and on).

Animal Shelter (every Saturday): Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700. Volunteer with a Veterans’ Retirement Community – Carteret House (every Monday except 12/25): Bond with Veterans and swap stories at one of our local retirement communities. Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday): Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is service uniform of the day please. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Youth Sports Basketball and Cheer Coaches! If you are interested in volunteering to be a Youth Sports Basketball or Cheer on base for 7-12 year old athletes, please contact MCCS Youth Sports at 252-466-5493. Will be 3-5 hours per week. Tryon Palace Garden Blitz Days (every Wednesday; POV only). Assist the Tryon Palace with raking, gardening, and mowing. POV only. Meet at Tryon Palace (0830 to 1130 and/or 1300-1600). Please bring gloves, sunscreen, water source, and bug spray. Please see the SMP front desk if you would like to borrow work gloves. Additional registration details on our website! Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required. WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer! JANUARY SPECIAL EVENTS:

UFC FIGHT NIGHT (1/20) FREE. UFC 220. Heavyweight Title Fight: Miocic vs Ngannou, Cormier vs Oezdemir, Kattar vs Burgos, Villante vs Barroso, and many more!! Prelims kick-off at 2000; Main fight starts at 2200 at the Roadhouse! Toys for Tots Volunteer Appreciation Party (1/30 @1830). SMP will be showing appreciation to the Marines that Volunteered for the 2017 Toys for Tots Program. Open to all who volunteered for Toys for Tots in 2017! Special awards will be given to the Marines that had the largest impacts on the program. SMP Council Meeting and SMP Executive Committee Annual Elections! (1/25 at 1430 at the Roadhouse): ALL ARE WELCOME!!! SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL concerns. We’ll also be having SMP Executive Committee Annual Elections for the following billets: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recorder, and Committee Groups Leader. We highly encourage all interested SMP Reps to run! Pro-Bowl Party!! (1/28). Come see your favorite NFL football players in this All-Star matchup! Anticipated to kick off at 1500, but please check our website for any time updates. Pool Tournaments (1/2, 1/11, 1/16, 1/25, 1/30) at 2000. Canvas and Cork (1/31) at 1830. Poker Tournaments (1/4, 1/9, 1/18, 1/23) at 2000. Cards Against Humanity Night (1/7 and 1/21) at 1930. Musical Bingo (1/16) at 2030. Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. Disgruntled Decks Marine Corps Edition (1/4 and 1/18 at 2100). (Sort of like Cards Against Humanity … but SPECIFICALLY FOR MARINES. No kiddos present, please). FREE SMP Golf Clinics (every Wednesday): Have fun while learning golf fundamentals or work on your existing technique! All range balls and equipment will be provided. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1645, or directly at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course at 1700. Clinic is one hour. Pre-registration required on our SMP website. Fridays! Karaoke!! Starts at 1900. Check website for updates College Saturday and Tailgate Sundays!! (every Saturday and Sunday). SMP Colleges Saturdays and SMP Tailgate Sundays are here!!! Come enjoy your favorite football games, great company, and great Roadhouse specials!!

TEAM RIVALRY WEEK (15 JANUARY THROUGH 20 JANUARY):

Sports Movie Festival (1/15 and 1/16). Enjoy all of your favorite Sports themed movies at the Roadhouse! TOP TEAM BANNER MAKING NITE (1/16. Anytime from 1800-2300). Come decorate a banner for your favorite team (any sport); will be displayed at the Roadhouse. All supplies provided. Team Rivalry Party (1/18 @ 1930). Come on out to the Roadhouse for a night of TEAM RIVALRY shenanigans!! All sports encouraged (football, hockey, baseball, cheerleading … ALL) Awesome music, FREE FOOD, and games. Wear your favorite jersey, team colors, face paint, etc. Gift cards will be awarded for the top two spirited and most creative participants. Food will be served (while supplies last) at 1930! Karaoke (1/19 at 1900).

SPECIAL TRIPS:

HOT Greenville Nites Ice Skating Trip (1/13). Head up to Greenville and have a blast with ice skating, mall, restaurants, clubs, and awesome night life. Price includes transportation everywhere. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Will return at 0200. Registration due by 1/10. Students – see or email SMP Coordinator for letter for your Chain-of-Command, as needed. SMP and DEVIL DOG DARE (FREE!). SMP has received a number of spots for Devil Dog Dare, to include PAINTBALL. Two packages available! Includes the activities, lunch, and drinks at NO CHARGE to the Command/Marine/Sailor. o The “Fun” Package consists of the Zipline, Drop Zone, and Paintball (includes gear and air with 300 paintballs. Lunch and beverages included! (0700-1430).

o The “Challenge” Package consists of the high ropes challenge course, rappelling, rock climbing and mountain bikes. Lunch and beverages included!
