• In 1492: Colombus brought tobacco. When the settlers arrived in America, consumption was already spread throughout the continent.

• 16th Century: France, Spain and Portugal.• Decade of 1560: Jean Nicot praises the medicinal

properties.

• In the sixteenth century was already known the existence of tobacco across Europe and Russia.

• In the seventeenth century it came to China, Japan and the west coast of Africa.

• The final ingredient was discovered in 1864 by an American

farmer.

• The result was a mixture of biting.

TOBACCO PRODUCES DISEASES• In 1938: smokers don´t live as long as no-smokers.• In 1950: cigarette consumption produce lung cancer. • In 1953: Wynder shows that tobacco produce tumors.• In 1981: passive consumption of cigarettes and the lung

THREE MAIN COMPONENTSNICOTINE:• Insecticide• Poisonous for the nervous system.• Causes: accelerated heart rate.

CARBON MONOXIDE:• Poisonous.• Decreases the amount of oxygen in blood.

TAR:• Contains many poisonous substances.• Sticks to the cilia in the lungs, that cannot work

properly.• Narrows the bronchioles that transport air.

• Additives are chemical compounds used for: - Better flavour - More nicotine - Less smoke

• Cigarettes contain approximately 10% additives.

• Low –tar tobacco and low-nicotine tobacco may contain the same or more additives.

• Smoking is a strange behaviour. People knows it is bad for their health, but many still do it.

• Many smokers that have managed to quit smoking afirm to miss it.

• Tobacco has addictive substances.

• Most teenagers try smoking in secondary school. Many of them pick up the habit.

• Publicity, movies and magazines can be an important factor for people who starts smoking.

• Many campaigns for smoking prevention have teenagers as their main targets but they are not very efficient.
