• Andrew was awarded with a well-deserved trophy for Leadership & Good Sportsmanship! Then the family journeyed on to California where they saw the Padres play the Giants...and saw an Angel's game. Memories were abound for Mary Costigan and the other 98 people who attended their annual family reunion in Hawley, Pennsylvania at the Wood loch Resort. Celebrity sightings come straight from the Malenius family! Seems Princess Courtney has fallen in love after attending the Premiere of Michael Clayton starring no

other than George Clooney. Need we ask who the princess fell in love with? Meanwhile, Prince Justin was a star of his own participating in New York's Urbanathalon, sponsored by Men's Health Magazine. Our prince ran several miles, raced up and down 52 flights of stairs, through an obstacle course, ending hurdling a

wall. King & Queen Malenius were there to cheer him on and

offer post race support! Local celebrity happenings were reported by Grandpa Joseph Moran. Taylor is modeling for the American Girl magazine, and is also pictured on a McDonald's gift card! Meanwhile sister, CeCe, also has been busy with gymnastics and cheerJeading.

Dr. Bob wants to provide great and healthy smiles for his patients. So, have you received your flu vaccine? fiu shots shoufd first be given to tnose most at risk such as the elderly and the very young (over six months old), but all can benefit.

At least 200,000 Americans are likely to be hospitalized from influenza this season, which can cause 36,000 deaths due to flu complications. Influenza is an acute viral infection that affects the respiratory tract. The symptoms of flu are similar to the common cold, but you will generally feel more miserable very quickly with the flu. Elderly and those at greater risk, such as young children and chronically ill, having flu symptoms, should call their doctor immediately. Your doctor may prescribe Tamiflu. It must be taken 12 to 48 hours after flu symptoms begin, and works by stopping the spread of the flu virus. Tamiflu doesn't get rid of the flu, just speeds recovery. There has been concerns raised with its use by teenagers, who after taking Tamiflu experienced psychiatric symptoms, including suicide. The manufacturer reports there are no definite links and the drug is being closely monitored.

There are more than 200 different viruses known to cause common colds! Rhinovirus being the most commonly known source. More severe viral sources of colds include the parainfluenza virus. Although these viruses do not usually cause significant problems for adults, they can cause severe lower respiratory infections in young children. Cold viruses are highly contagious, especially during the first two to four days after symptoms appear and may be contagious up to three weeks.

Is it the cold or the flu? The National Institute of Health has established a list of symptoms that may help distinguish between the two conditions.

Symptom Cold Flu Fever Rare Common Headache Rare Common General aches Slight Common Fatigue/Weakness Sometimes Common Extreme Exhaustion Never Common Stuffy/Runny Nose Common Sometimes SneezingWatery Eyes Common Sometimes Sore throat Common Sometimes Cough/Chest Mild to Often Severe discomfort Moderate

If you have a cold it usually wi II last about a week. There is no cure for a cold, so you can only treat the symptoms. Use caution with over-the-counter medications. There

many common side effects, and people with certain medication conditions such as high blood pressure or thyroid disease should not take decongestants. Children should never take aspirin (which can cause Reye Syndrome, a potentially fatal illness, that is marked by brain and liver damage. The cause is unknown but is associated with aspirin to treat influenza and chicken pox in children). Always consult with your physician or pharmacist for recommendations. Doctors do not prescribe antibiotics for these viral infections since dleyare rneffecti..e against iI \f'rms iI{\d 'lour body can develop antibiotic resistance (microorganisms are able to withstand the effects of the antibiotic causing them to be ineffective). What you can do is drink plenty of the right types of liquids, including 8 glasses of water and/or juice per day to avoid dehydration. Avoid dehydrating beverages such as alcohol and caffeine. Many supplements such as echinacea, garlic and vitamin C, which offers a wide range of benefits for the human body, have been promoted as having the power to cure or prevent colds. However, at the present time none of these have been scientifically demonstrated to treat or prevent the common cold.

Watch your symptoms. A cold can leave the body open to other infections including bronchitis, ear and sinus infections. If a secondary bacterial infection develops, or if your cold lasts more than a week, contact your physician because a prolonged illness can be a sign of a more serious illness such as influenza or pneumonia.

As in any area of you r health prevention is the key prevent or minimize getting a cold or the flu!

A

eAvoid close contact with people who have colds-especially during the first few days after a person becomes infected. This is the most contagious time. If you become ill, stay home at least while most contagious! eFrequent handwashing. At least 70% of transmittable diseases can be avoided with proper handwashing! The cold virus can live up to three hours on a person's skin or inanimate objects. In general keep fingers away from the mouth, nose and eyes. The cold virus grows best at about 91 degrees fahrenheit, which is about the temperature inside the human nose! eManage stress levels. Stress affects the immune system and may increase a person's vulnerability to infection. Also, regular exercise and a healthy diet help to boost immune system functioning. elf you have a cold prevent the spread of infection by using tissues when sneezing or coughing. The germs from an uncovered sneeze or cough can spread 12 feet! Immediately dispose of soiled tissues and wash your hands. Avoid contact with those who may be particularly susceptible to developing a cold. eChange your toothbrush! After your cold or illness has subsided, throw out those germs!
