Riversands Incubation Hub is a ground-breaking initiative with the scale to have a real impact in building small businesses, creating new jobs and alleviating poverty.

At Riversands we are inspired by a vision of a South African economy growing and thriving through the creation of a large number of successful small businesses whose ownership reflects SA’s population demographics, creating jobs and economic opportunity for all. At capacity, the Hub will be home to 180 majority black-owned small businesses with 300 more in the off-campus programme.

I’m pleased to say since we opened our doors in 2015, we’ve welcomed some incredible entrepreneurs on campus. We boast a wide spread of industries and currently have over 150 high-potential black-owned businesses who call Riversands their home. Mofokeng previously owned a sewing business called Twilight and was making school uniforms while Serake had a sewing business called Ekares (her surname spelled backwards) specialising in fashion design. The two joined forces in November 2015 to form Ekares Twilight. The business creates bespoke designer wear for everyday style and special occasions. The company’s products include: bridal wear for the entire bridal party, traditional wear, African-inspired work wear and corporate uniforms.

Mother of one Mpho Kgatla from Diepsloot was previously unemployed and used to spend her days at home with nothing to do, but her circumstances have changed dramatically since she enrolled on the Riversands Upcycling Programme in partnership with Coca- Cola South Africa. Today, Kgatla is the proud owner of Kgatla Designs – a sewing business based at Riversands Incubation Hub. The business specialises in bags and shoes made from upcycled fabric.

One of the biggest challenges our country faces is the high rate of orphaned and vulnerable children. For Mavis Ndou, this reality is close to home – her extended family which includes a number of orphans who depend on her financially. To improve her family’s situation, Ndou started her own business – Matodzi Sewing – and is now earning a steady income. Matodzi Sewing specialises in bags, dressmaking, church uniforms and custom-made designs.

Established in 2016 by Francina Pholoane, Lebone Sewing Co-op is a sewing business that makes a variety of products including backpacks using upcycled fabric, curtains and dresses to name a few. Phaloane used to spend her days at home in Diepsloot doing alterations using a domestic sewing machine. They say “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” This is certainly the case for Tsebetso Morojile, founder of Khabanyane Investment Holdings, which specialises in data security and mobile phone recycling. She says she took the entrepreneurial route “for the love of it”.
