SMD fuses: Key trends, industry outlook , comparison table of 12 suppliers, gallery view

Fuse manufacturers shift focus to SMD, resettable typesStrong demand in portable electronics deemphasizes traditional DIP and one-time variants.Broadening adoption in mobile electronics is driving China fuse makers to focus on building up their SMD selections. The variant is expected to overtake conventional DIP configurations in terms of shipments in the next one or two years. From 40 percent, the former’s share is expected to surpass 50 percent. In addition to portable devices, the computer, communications, A/V and automotive electronics, medical equipment and power supplies fields are fueling the uptick in requirement.

Companies are also highlighting resettable kinds, which are widely used in the above applications. The type accounts for 30 to 40 percent of deliveries.

XC Electronics (Shenzhen) Corp. Ltd, which began offering SMD models in 2013, allocates 10 percent of production for the subcategory. This year, it will increase the ratio by over 10 percent.

Shenzhen UN Semiconductor, meanwhile, bolstered output of resettable versions by 30 percent in 2014 and will do so by more than 10 percent in the months ahead. Its releases come in various sizes, including 0603, 0805, 1206, 1210, 1812 and 2920.

China manufacturers said the demand rise has resulted in 10 percent annual sales boost in recent years. They expect to continue benefiting from this trend, and are eyeing batteries for mobile devices and LED drivers as key application markets. XC projects the increase in requirement will exceed 10 percent by end-2015. The company turns out SMD fuses mainly for mobile device chargers.

The upbeat development reflects in exports as well. Overseas shipments climbed between 5 and 10 percent last year, and are projected to remain on the upswing in coming months. These represent half of the country’s total deliveries. The bulk is sent to the US, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East.

Shenzhen UN anticipates growth in outbound volume surpassing 10 percent, thanks to emerging destinations such as the Middle East and South America. The company sends more than 30

percent of output abroad. Its major markets are East and Southeast Asia, and Europe.

To keep up the momentum and differ from international players in China, local manufacturers offer better price-performance ratio, shorter lead time and enhanced aftersales. They generally have 5 to 10 percent lower quotes and are open to small orders. XC guarantees delivery in less than seven days.

Suppliers continue to upgrade facilities with advanced equipment as well. Shenzhen Deer has installed a filament production line and testing machines, while Shenzhen UN will acquire more of the latter.

There are over 300 makers of SMD fuses in China, of which more than one-third are domestic companies. The foreign-invested operations forming the majority include global leaders Littelfuse, AEM and TE Connectivity. They are responsible for 50 percent of sales in the line there.

The provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, specifically Dongguan, Shenzhen and Xiamen cities, have the largest gathering of manufacturers. The others are in Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

Mainstream range

Resettable and one-time fuses from China suppliers come in 0603, 0805, 1206, 1812 and 2920 versions, with the first two sizes leading output. These have a glass-encapsulated ceramic or epoxy resin body, and nickel- or tin-plated copper, tin or silver terminals.

Based on rated voltage and current, the selection includes 6 to 60V and 0.5 to 25A units. The key applications are smartphones, digital cameras, computers and peripherals, displays and power supplies.

Most companies offer products compliant with various standards such as CE, GS, RoHS, TÜV and UL. XC’s 1206 models, which have silver filament and terminations, and a glass-covered ceramic body, carry cUL and UL approval.

Makers source key materials copper, tin, silver, nickel, ceramic, epoxy resin and glass locally. Some turn to overseas providers, especially for epoxy resin and ceramic.

Stable input costs are expected to keep prices at current levels for the rest of the year. A few makers have reduced their quotes to cope with intense local competition. XC adjusted its rates by 5 percent.

Oveseas shipments climbed between 5 and 10 percent last year, and are projected to remain on the upswing in coming months.

The model 12F/12T SMD fuse from XC comes in 1206 form, and has silver filament and terminals.
