Attentional demand: The cognitive, visual, and manual resources needed for an activity.

Frequency: The exposure of the activity or how often you conduct an activity.

There are three types of distractions – visual, manual, and cognitive. Examples include:

Visual demand: Using a cellphone or even the radio may require your eyes to move from the road

Manual demand: Applying makeup or holding a drink requires your hands to be off the wheel

Cognitive demand: Having a conversation, reading (other than road signs), and even listening to the radio may divert your mind from driving

Cellphones and even wireless devices may cause a distraction.

The images illustrates various examples of visual, manual, and cognitive types of distractions.

Ensure your policy aligns with your organizational goals.

Have the employees sign a pledge stating they will be attentive drivers both at work and at home, by never texting or talking on the phone while driving, being a good citizen, saying something if traveling with a distracted driver, and encouraging others to take a similar pledge. It would be difficult for an organization to enforce policies outside of work hours, but employees in an organization with a solid safety culture will feel an obligation to be safe and avoid distracted driving outside the workplace.

For an example of an organization policy and pledge forms, visit: Distraction.gov Take Action, NSC Take Back Your Drive Pledge, AT&T It Can Wait Campaign.

Train employee on safe driving practices. Tell them to:•Complete activities prior to driving, such as GPS, radio, or adjusting mirrors•Pull off the road if any activity needs addressed immediately•Do not attempt while driving•Focus 100% of your time on driving when you are behind the wheel

SMART = Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-oriented

Take a comprehensive approach to avoid distracting driving activities. Consider education, engineering, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation.

Education is pertinent to inform employees about distracted driving. Examples include driving education, driving manuals, or media. You may already have some engineering controls implemented, including speed bumps through your parking lot. Depending on the work and personal vehicles used, some may be equipped with in-vehicle safety devices too.

Evaluate the distracting driving components in your company and consider incorporating these components into your goals and objectives. Continue to encourage employees to avoid distractions while driving.
