Use of bright colours that will attract the target audiences and make the magazine stand out from others, these are also the house style colours of the magazine used in every issue.

Articles in the magazine, using ‘private’ makes the article seem exclusive and a must see for the reader.

Magazine looks fun and all the language used is quite colloquial, this make it appeal to the target audience.

Contents uses same house style and colours as cover makes the reader feel at home with the magazine.

Use of flashes to offer prizes and also to advertise the magazine, saying that the magazine has ‘news’ that you could call ‘gossip’ or ‘whatever’

Contact details of the magazine team, shows all of the people who work on the team and what they do, this can appeal to the reader so they can follow all of their work.

This is like an editor’s note but it is from the whole team not just the editor, also details all of the magazine articles featured in the issue.

Use of Polaroid images to make them look as if the artists have taken them, makes them easy to relate to.

Actual contents, uses subheadings that have the relating articles under them in the smash hits house style

Images from their day out, this gives the reader insight and something real to look at and makes the article more fun to read

Part of the article is using the images and having a caption that anchors the images, but these captions have part of the interview in them each image is a different band members response.

An offer of winning a signed helmet from the band members, this helps entice the reader and will attract all of the bands fans

The article still uses all of the house style colours, and to add to this uses a tyre mark stamp on the corners to embed the article but still stick to the theme

Target audience-

Smash Hits magazine is music magazine that was aimed at a young teenage audience, although it is no longer being created. The magazine genre of Smash Hits is that it is a pop music magazine. The demonstration of this in the magazine is that it is made to look fun and attractive by its bright, bold colours and images. The magazine first came about in September 1978 when a test issue was released, the first full issue was released a month later and featured Blondie on the cover. The founder was Nick Logan who had previously worked for NME.

The social class of someone that reads Smash hits! would be aimed at families in the C2 area, as it looks quite cheap and as cluttered in comparison to other music magazines such as NME. The audience for Smash Hits is most young teenage females. Core target audience is 7 -15 year olds. The typical reader is one that likes to follow a pop genre of music.

Target audience on cover - The specific targeting could be identified by the masthead of Smash Hits because it is bright pink which symbolises that is made for females. Also on the cover the artists reflect the young teenage audience (Mcfly). The cover also has the fun element to it, as one of the headings is ‘I am a celeb… Secrets’ this reflects the young female audience and how they do like gossip.

Target audience on contents and in article – the contents and article continue the fun, bright and vibrant style that is represented on the cover by using the house style colours. The contents uses a lot of abbreviations such as ‘SH! Team’ this is for smash hits, this helps the audience to relate to it and keeps the magazine young. The article use real exclusive images that will attract the target audience and make them want to see the article.
