Introduction

Are you ready for a tech timeout? The sections in this book have lots of ideas for activities that don’t involve computers, smartphones, or TVs . Each activity provides plenty of screen-free fun . As you go through this book, keep an eye out for red letters and this balloon hidden on some of the pages . You can keep track of them to complete activities at the end of the “Solve It” and “Find It” sections!

Create ItGet creative! You’ll have a chance to glue, tape, draw, paint, snip, tear, and stack to complete a craft project . You may want to ask your parents to stock up on some of the following items that will be needed for this section: paper (including heavy paper, such as cardstock), colored construction paper, a roll of butcher paper or brown craft paper, crayons or colored pencils, glue, tape (including masking tape or blue painter’s tape), scissors, craft sticks, paint, brushes, sidewalk chalk, straws, yarn, and decorative stickers .

Solve ItThe activities in this section require little more than a pencil and your brain . Many of the puzzles put your knowledge of words, numbers, and critical thinking to the test . Other puzzles require a keen sense of observation .

Find ItThe hunt is on! Whether indoors, outdoors, or on the page, these activities will have you focused on tasks that require looking, finding, and collecting .

Play It Time to get up and get moving! This section is filled with exercises and other physical activities to get your heart rate up and burn off energy . Whether it’s running, hopping, dancing, or stretching, you are sure to get a healthy workout .

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Have you played the game Rock, Paper, Scissors? On the count of three, both players put out one hand that is flat (paper), in a fist (rock), or with two f ingers spread apart (scissors). Paper beats rock, rock beats scissors, and scissors beat paper.

You’ll need a partner to play this version of the game, too. On the count of three, both players jump into position. Squat down and curl up tightly for “rock.” Stand straight with your hands at your sides for “paper.” Stand with your legs wide apart and arms straight up over your head for “scissors.” The player who wins each round earns one point. The first player to make it to 10 wins the game.
