Chapter 1

Important Information for Front Projection Interactive Whiteboard OwnersBefore you use your SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard, please read and understand the safety warnings and precautions described in this section. These safety warnings and precautions instruct you in the safe and correct operation of your interactive whiteboard and its accessories so you can prevent injuries or equipment damage. You must always ensure that the interactive whiteboard is being used correctly.

In this section, the term “interactive whiteboard” refers primarily to your interactive whiteboard and its power supply accessories. Also read the safety warnings and precautions that came with your peripheral products, such as your computer and your projector.

Safety Warnings and PrecautionsWARNINGS• Do not stare into the beam of light created by the projector. Instruct children

not to look directly at this beam of light.

• Failure to follow the installation instructions shipped with the interactive whiteboard could result in personal injury and damage to the product.

• Do not mount the SMART Board 660, 680, 685 or 690 interactive whiteboard on an FS570 floor stand. Using this stand could result in product damage or personal injury.

• Do not climb (or allow children to climb) on a wall-mounted SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Climbing on the interactive whiteboard could result in personal injury and product damage.

2 | CHAPTER 1 – IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FRONT PROJECTION INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD OWNERS

• You must connect the USB cable that came with your interactive whiteboard to a computer that has a USB-compliant interface and that bears the USB logo. In addition, the USB source computer must be compliant with CSA/UL/EN 60950 and bear the CE mark and CSA and/or UL Mark(s) for CSA/UL 60950. This ensures operating safety and prevents damage to the SMART Board interactive whiteboard.

• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose the interactive whiteboard to rain or moisture.

• If you move an interactive whiteboard that is mounted on a floor stand, do so with care. Quick stops, excessive force and uneven surfaces may cause the interactive whiteboard to overturn. Make sure you flip up the anti-tip feet when you move the interactive whiteboard.

CAUTIONTo ensure operating safety and to avoid product damage, read the following instructions carefully.

• Read the guide that came with your projector carefully, familiarizing yourself with all the warnings and cautions.

• If you are transporting the interactive whiteboard over a distance, completely repackage it using the original packaging. If the original packaging is no longer available, pack all components with as much padding as reasonably possible to ensure that they are not exposed to excessive vibration or shock.

• Avoid setting up and using the interactive whiteboard in an area with excessive levels of dust, humidity and smoke.

• Avoid leaving cables on the floor. If you must run a cable over the floor, lay the cable in a flat, straight line, and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable management strip in a contrasting color. Handle cables carefully and avoid excessive bending. You can eliminate the need for a cable by purchasing a SMART Wireless USB Connection.

• If your floor stand has retractable anti-tip feet, make sure they are extended when the interactive whiteboard is in use to ensure the greatest possible stability.

• Do not add any extra weight or excessive pressure to the wall-mounted interactive whiteboard or its pen tray. The brackets are designed to support only the weight of the interactive whiteboard during normal use.

• If your SMART product requires replacement parts, make sure the service technician uses parts specified by SMART Technologies, or parts with the same characteristics as the originals.

IMPORTANTYou must supply the following cables:

• An RS-232 control cable (to establish communication between the projector and the USB connector of your computer via the Projector Controller). See your projector’s vendor for help with purchasing this cable.

• An IEC-320-C13 to country-specific power cable (to power the system).

Extending CablesAs mentioned later in these instructions, you will mount the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor near your projector. However, if you decide to mount it away from the projector (in a control room, for example), you can purchase longer cables or extensions to replace the provided cables.

The provided USB A/B cable is 16' (5 m). To extend this cable, you can purchase 16' (5 m) USB extension cables from SMART Technologies (Part No. USB-XT). Use the provided USB A/B cable and four of these extension cables to create an 80' (25 m) cable.

You can replace the provided 16' (5.0 m) Cat 5 RJ-45 cable with another cable up to 100' (30.5 m), plenum rated as necessary.

Tools RequiredYou must supply the mounting hardware and tools needed to install the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor. For example, if you install the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor on a concrete wall or ceiling, you may need a cement drill bit to bore a pilot hole, appropriate anchors, screws to fit the anchors and the appropriate screwdriver. You may also require other common tools, such as a measuring tape, pencil, etc.

Hardware InstallationNOTEYou don’t need to remove your SMART Board interactive whiteboard from the wall or floor stand to perform the following procedure.

Follow the next two procedures to install the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor and its cables, and then the control panel and its cable.

To install the ProjectorController and

Activity Sensor

1. Install the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor near the projector using the appropriate hardware for the mounting surface. You can install it on the ceiling (near a ceiling-mounted projector), on the wall or on a piece of projector furniture.

2. Connect the provided power adapter to the projector’s power cable and then connect the adapter to the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor.

3. Connect the IEC-320-C13 end of a country-specific power cable (not included) to the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor. Connect the other end to an available power outlet.

4. Connect one end of the included USB cable to the USB-B connector of the Projector Controller.

5. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB-A connector on the interactive whiteboard’s computer.

6. Connect one end of an RS-232 control cable (purchased separately) to the Projector Controller’s DB9(M) connector.

7. Connect the other end of the RS-232 cable to the serial connector on your projector. Typically, this connector is labeled “PC Control” or may have the following symbol: .

8. Connect one end of the provided Cat 5 cable to the Projector Controller’s RJ-45 connector.

In a later step, you will connect the other end of this cable to the Control Panel.

To install theControl Panel

1. Reach under the pen tray and pop out the expansion slot cover.

2. Place the SystemOn Control Panel into the expansion slot, and then gently push down until it snaps into place.

3. Connect the other end of the Cat 5 cable that you connected in step 7 of the previous procedure to the RJ-45 connector on the bottom of the Control Panel.

4. Secure the Cat 5 cable so that it’s out of sight and where it won’t be accidentally damaged.

Installing and Configuring the Software

IMPORTANTBefore you install SystemOn software, you must first disable any third-party anti-spyware programs. If anti-spyware programs are active, you won’t be able to make a connection to the SystemOn software.

Refer to the manual that came with your anti-spyWare software for directions on disabling or suspending the protection.

After you’ve installed SystemOn software, you can turn on your spyware protection by following the manufacturer’s directions.

After you’ve installed SystemOn software, you’ll customize its features.

Installing SystemOn SoftwareNOTEMake sure that you have installed SMART Board software 9.7 or SMART Notebook 10 or later on your computer, and then make sure that your projector, SMART Board 600 series interactive whiteboard and computer are working together properly.

To install SystemOnSoftware on Windows®XP and 2000 computers

1. Insert the provided CD into your computer's CD drive.

2. If the installation doesn’t start automatically, select Start > Run, and then type x:\CDBrowser.exe in the Run window (where “x” is the letter of your CD drive).

OR

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the CD drive, and then double-click the CDBrowser.exe file.

3. Select Install.

The SystemOn InstallShield Wizard appears.

4. Click Next, and then click Install.

Installing the Software on Windows Vista® Computers

To install SystemOnSoftware on Windows

Vista computers

1. Insert the included CD into your computer's CD drive.

The CDBrowser starts automatically.

If it doesn’t start automatically, select Start > Computer, and then double-click the CD drive icon.

2. If the AutoPlay window appears, click Run CDBrowser.exe.

The SystemOn Expansion Module dialog box appears.

3. Click Install.

The User Account Control dialog box appears.

4. Click Continue.

The Preparing to install window appears.

5. Click Next, and the click Install.

NOTEYou must upgrade the SystemOn controller’s firmware before you can use it with Windows Vista computers. Use the SMART Firmware Upgrade Wizard to upgrade the firmware. You don't need to upgrade the firmware to use it with Windows 2000 or XP computers.

To upgrade the firmware 1. Switch to the SMART Firmware Upgrade Wizard.

2. Select SystemOn from the list. There may be other applications listed.

3. Click Next.

After a short pause, the firmware’s current version appears and the version of the firmware file on the CD appears if it’s a later version.

4. If the current firmware version is the same as the version on the CD, click Next.

OR

If the CD firmware file is later than the current version, click Yes, and then click Next.

The firmware updates.

5. Click Next, and then click Finish.

The SystemOn Expansion Module dialog box appears.

6. Click Finish, and then click Exit.

Configuring SystemOn SoftwareAfter you install SystemOn software, you’ll have to configure it to recognize your projector’s settings. Locate the documentation that came with your projector and keep it for reference.

IMPORTANTYou must have Administrator rights on your computer to configure the SystemOn software.

NOTEAfter you configure the SystemOn settings for the first time on a Windows Vista computer, the Program Compatibility Assistant dialog box appears. Select This control panel works correctly.

To configureSystemOn software

1. Select Start > Control Panel.

The Control Panel window appears.

2. If you’re running Windows Vista in 64-bit mode, select 32-bit Control Panel.

3. Double-click the SystemOn item.

The SystemOn dialog box appears.

IMPORTANTIf your projector’s manufacturer is not shown in the list, you must customize the projector settings individually.

If you find the projector’s manufacturer but can’t find your projector’s specific model, you might be able to select a similar model from that manufacturer. Consult the documentation that came with your projector to determine if serial control settings are compatible between models. If they are not, you’ll have to customize the projector settings individually.

To select the display 1. Click the Display tab in the SystemOn dialog box.

2. From the Manufacturer list, select the projector manufacturer’s name.

3. From the Model list, select the projector model.

The Serial Control Settings (Bits per second, Data bits, Parity, Stop bits) automatically update with the manufacturer’s default settings.

4. Click OK.

To customize thedisplay settings

1. Click the Display tab in the SystemOn dialog box.

2. Click Custom.

The Custom Script Creator wizard appears.

3. Click Next.

The Display Model dialog box appears.

4. Type the name of the manufacturer and model of the projector in their respective text boxes.

5. Click Next.

The Serial Communication Settings dialog box appears.

6. Select the appropriate values for Bits per second, Data bits, Parity and Stop bits.

NOTEYou can find this information in the documentation included with your projector.

7. Click Next.

The Display Script Power On Script dialog box appears.

Creating Custom ScriptsYou can use two properties in a basic custom script: Send Data and Sleep.

The Send Data property (written with either ASCII strings or integers) can take a number of parameters, for example:

send("PON");send(0x50, 0x4f, 0x4E);send(80, 79, 78);

The Sleep property inserts pauses (in milliseconds) between the send commands to allow the projector enough time to react.

To create a custom script 1. Type a parameter in the Send Data box, and then click the Add button on the same line.

2. Type a parameter in the Sleep box, and then click the Add button on the same line. Keep working in this manner until your script is complete.

Scripts automatically validate as you enter them. If you enter an invalid parameter, the script editor shows the invalid entry in red. Hovering the mouse over the editor window displays the error as a tool tip.

NOTEYou can find Send Data and Sleep information in the documentation included with your projector.

3. Click Next.

The Display Script Power Off dialog box appears.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to create the projector’s Power Off Script.

5. Click Next.

The Custom Script Creator completion window appears.

6. Click Finish to complete the scripting process.

The Advanced TabYou can configure SystemOn to log off a user from Windows automatically after a certain amount of time has passed without activity. You can also configure the Display’s Mode Detection that SystemOn uses to detect whether the projector is in Normal or Standby mode.

To configure AutomaticLog Off

1. Select the Advanced tab in the SystemOn dialog box.

2. Select the Log off user on standby check box.

The minute selection box activates.

3. Select the number of minutes of inactivity after which the user is logged off.

4. Click OK.

SystemOn measures the current used by the projector to determine whether the display is in Normal or Standby mode. If SystemOn detects a value below the Threshold value, it determines that the projector is off or in Standby mode. If SystemOn detects a value above the Threshold value, it determines that the projector is on.

To configure DisplayMode Detection

1. Select the Advanced tab in the SystemOn dialog box.

2. Click Automatic Calibration if you want SystemOn software to determine the Threshold value for your projector automatically.

NOTEYou must turn the projector on before you can use this feature.

OR

In the Threshold value box, manually select a value for your projector.

Configuring the ComputerYou must adjust the computer settings so that the SystemOn button can remotely bring up the computer out of Standby mode.

To configure yourcomputer for SystemOn

1. In Windows Control Panel, select System.

The System Properties window appears.

2. Select the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

The Device Manager window appears.

3. Under Human Interface Devices, double-click the HID-compliant device that corresponds to SystemOn.

NOTEYour Device Manager choices might not match those shown above.

The SystemOn Properties dialog box appears.

4. Select the Power Management tab, and then select Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby.

5. Click OK.

Using SystemOnSystemOn responds when you press the button. However, this function works only when the projector and computer are turned on or in Standby mode.

Turning On SystemOnIf the computer and projector are both turned on or in Standby mode, simply push the illuminated SystemOn button to bring the computer and the projector into full Operating mode.

Turning Off SystemOnWhen you have finished and want to shut down the system, press the illuminated SystemOn button to begin a reversible power off. A black screen appears, and if you push the button within 15 seconds of the initial button press, the power off sequence is cancelled. Otherwise, the SystemOn power down sequence puts the projector into Standby mode.

Power Save OptionsSystemOn monitors the activity of the projector and computer and responds to these states accordingly. Although it isn’t necessary, you can manually configure the Power Save options for both your projector and computer. (Read the documentation included with these components for more information.)

However, if you configure your computer to enter a Hibernate mode after a certain period of inactivity, SystemOn recognizes that state as “power off”. Manually turn on your computer so that SystemOn recognizes it as being on.

Troubleshooting

Projector Controller and Activity SensorThere is a small status light on the side of the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor.

• When you initially connect the unit to a power outlet, the status light flashes on and off quickly (at a 25 millisecond interval) for the first 0.25 seconds as it searches for a signal from a control panel button press. If the unit detects a button press, it remains in Boot mode. If it doesn’t detect a button press, the software verifies the application’s checksum and, if it is correct, the application starts.

• The status light flashes in an “On On Off Off” pattern until the unit is enumerated by the computer and the computer receives data from the unit. After the connection is established, the status light turns solid red.

• When you upgrade the SystemOn firmware, the status light flashes on and off at a rate of 0.75 seconds when no SMART software is being processed. When the Projector Controller receives SMART software commands the light flashes more quickly, indicating that the controller is receiving data.

Control PanelThere is one large, illuminated On button and four status indicators on the control panel.

On Button This button illuminates when all the cables are connected properly and the system is receiving power.

System Status This light beside the check mark flashes green while the system is warming up, and remains solid green when the system is operating correctly.

Sleep Status This light beside the half moon flashes amber when the system is shutting down, and remains solid amber when everything has shut down correctly.

Computer Fault This light below the computer icon flashes red when there is a problem with the computer.

Projector Fault This light below the projector icon flashes red when there is a problem with the projector.

Status MessagesMessages appear at the bottom of the SystemOn dialog boxes to keep you informed about the status of the service.

SystemOn service is working properlyThe following status message appears when the service is working properly.

SystemOn service is not runningThe following status message appears when the SystemOn service is stopped.

To correct this problem, first make sure all the cables are properly connected to the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor, the Control Panel and the computer.

To start theSystemOn service

1. Select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services on Windows 2000 and XP computers.

OR

Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services on Windows Vista computers.

The Services window appears.

2. Double-click SystemOn Service.

The SystemOn Service Properties dialog box appears.

3. Click Start to start the service.

If you perform these steps and the status message still says the service isn’t running, contact your Technical Support representative.

Device not foundThe following status message appears when SystemOn is unable to connect to its hardware.

To correct this problem, make sure all the cables are properly connected to the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor, the Control Panel and the computer.

If this status message is still displayed, disconnect the USB cable from either the Projector Controller and Activity Sensor or the computer, wait a few moments, and then reconnect the cable.

If all the cables are connected properly, you have disconnected and then reconnected the USB cable, and you still see this status message, contact your Technical Support representative.

SystemOn service is not configuredThe following status message appears after you have installed SystemOn software but before you have configured the system.

If you complete the installation and configure the system, but you still see this message, contact your Technical Support representative.
