RMF Magic processes your CMF or RMF data to generatenew metrics and insight that allow you to understandand optimize the performance of your workloads eveninside your disk subsystems. It provides storage, per-formance, and capacity planning professionals withprofound insight into zSeries storage performance.

Architecture changes released by storage vendors inrecent years have yielded significant improvements instorage performance. These changes however, have alsointroduced new layers of complexity in understandingand monitoring the entire I/O infrastructure. Anotherconsequence is that the typical performance bottleneckhas shifted from the host to components within the disksubsystem.

The increased levels of complexity and the need to understand how all the components inside the DiskSubsystem are keeping up with the workload has created the need for some new methods and newmetrics to understand and manage mainframe storageperformance.

RMF Magic Applications� Health Check through DashboardThe RMF Magic dashboard incorporates intelligenceabout workloads and the capabilities of the specific disksubsystem. It generates early warning of performancedegradation and it also provides quick drill down to thedataset level. The dashboard allows you to recognizeworkload volumes, patterns, peaks and performanceexceptions.

� Service Level AgreementsOne of RMF Magic’s functions is to report performancestatistics by Storage Group or by customizable interestgroups allowing you to verify if Service Level Agree-ments are met.

� Trend AnalysisThe results of a new RMF Magic run can be added to ahistorical performance database so that informationcan be presented over a longer period of time, enablingtrend monitoring.

� Performance Exception MonitoringStandard RMF Magic output is at the Disk Subsystem orLogical Subsystem level. After thresholds are defined,RMF Magic also performs exception reporting for you atdevice level. For instance, you can list all occurrences ofany device exceeding 16 MB /sec in write activity, or showany device that exhibits >2 msec IOSQ time. This power-ful option allows you to focus your analysis on thosedevices that need your attention. RMF Magic also sup-ports data set reports based on SMF 42 records, allowingyou to study the workload in even greater detail.

� Diagnose FICON ElongationRMF Magic reports channel usage expressed in I/O oper-ations and Megabytes read and written. These numbersallow RMF Magic to recommend changes in your FICONchannel configuration, when elongation occurs.

� Capacity PlanningRMF Magic provides insight in the I/O load distributionover Disk Subsystems, thus indicating if additionalcapacity could be created by tuning. And because of itsdata presentation over time it provides another vitalcapacity planning factor: growth rate.

� Bandwidth ComputationWhen planning data mirroring it is critical to researchthe inter-site write bandwidth requirements. Thisrequires information that is not directly available in rawRMF data. RMF Magic features advanced algorithms tocompute the missing element: write Megabyte persecond.

� Asynchronous Copy ServicesRMF Magic provides support for the planning and moni-toring of asynchronous copy services like EMC SRDF/A,IBM Global Mirror and HP/Hitachi Universal Replicator.Specific support is provided for IBM’s Global Mirror forzSeries (Extended Remote Copy).

� Parallel Access Volumes and HyperPAVRMF Magic provides all the information you need forlogical volume consolidation and for optimal PAV orHyperPAV assignment in your configuration. This willhelp you solve any 64K device address constraints thatyou may have, even when multiple addresses are requi-red because of remote mirroring and/or flash copy.

� Large Capacity Logical VolumesFrom a systems management perspective, large capaci-ty volumes are highly desirable, but usually there is anumber of performance-critical volumes that needs tostay on a smaller logical volume. RMF Magic identifiesthose by listing all devices that exceed a user-selectedcriterion such as I/O rate or write rate.

� Data Consolidation RMF Magic processes RMF data originating from one ormore z/OS servers to extract and consolidate configura-tion and I/O load data by physical Disk Subsystem. Theresult is a disk-centric view of Disk Subsystem I/O loadand performance, regardless of the number of servers orParallel Sysplexes they are attached to. With RMF Magicthere is no need to manually consolidate printed RMFreports.

� Ease of UseRMF Magic can run as a batch job on z/OS or on a WindowsPC. In the first step of the RMF Magic analysis, the RMFinformation is compacted by a factor 12 to 1. This reduc-tion of the data volume enables responsive interactiveanalysis.

The final stage of the analysis is interactive, and alwaystakes place on the PC, interfacing to Microsoft Excel.RMF Magic facilitates the preparation and submission ofbatch processes when running these on a PC.

RMF Magic allows for interactive data analysis on yourPC and is designed to keep you focused on the problem

at hand rather than on the technicalities of writing database queries or controlling Excel.The dashboard lets you find hotspots and tuning oppor-tunities quickly. Using the graphs, you can easily see thedifference between recurring I/O load peaks and perfor-mance anomalies.By just pushing a button, all charts created in a studycan be exported to PowerPoint, thus providing for aneasy way to document a study.

� Interest GroupsBy defining Interest Groups, the user can make RMFMagic generate any of its reports or charts for a subsetof the devices. Examples of this could be the devicesthat will be part of a data mirroring environment, DB2table space volumes, work volumes during weekdays, orany other subset that is meaningful for a particularanalysis.

� Disk MagicOptionally, more far-reaching capacity planning supportis provided in cooperation with another IntelliMagicproduct: Disk Magic, a Disk Subsystem performancemodeling product.
