biometric technology using a smartphone to meet city compliance requirements.

Smart Sensors makes iris recognition available on Android

Smart Sensors has ported its Mirlin Iris Recognition SDK to the Android

operating system for smartphones. It is targeting two main applications. One

is law enforcement, whereby agencies can run biometric authentication via a mobile device. Smart Sensors is also working with partners devel-oping multi-modal biometrics and other data col-lection solutions suitable for use in the field.

Olim palm scanning system tracks ER admissions

Olim Technologies has launched a biometric palm scanning system,

TIM, which tracks emergency hospital patient admissions by palm scan and logs the scan into a database. It checks for any previous visits to all local emergency departments. If concerning behaviour is detected, a popup will alert the emergency department.

TIM can help increase ER efficiency by reducing wait times, expedite the registration process and help reduce uncompensated care costs in the US.

European network to drive biometrics R&D

The European Association for Biometrics (EAB), founded late

2011, has announced it wants to drive biometrics R&D while protecting privacy. “Despite all positive forecasts, a global biometrics boom has not set in so far”, says Alexander Nouak, chairman of EAB.

The non-profit EAB wants to bring together industry, regulators and user groups by found-ing a Europe-wide network, and be an inde-pendent contact point for interested parties and promote the training of biometrics experts.

The foundation of the EAB is a follow-up activity of the BEST Network project pro-moted by the European Commission within the scope of the 7th research framework programme.

Aadhaar enrolments take a break in March

According to The Hindu, Aadhaar enrolments across India have been

suspended until mid-April as the pro-cess is reviewed.

This comes soon after authorities announced that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the National Population Register would share the task of collecting biometric and demographic data of residents.

Enrolments crossed the 200m mark in February.

Media sector interest in biometrics for marketing hots up

The media sector is showing increas-ing interest in biometric technolo-

gies for marketing purposes. At pre-sent biometrics are used to identify categories of people, such as male or female, or types of behaviour, rather than identifying individuals.

A biometric research study, ‘Measuring the Magic of the Movies: The Emotional Impact of Moviegoing on In-Cinema Advertising’, has applied Innerscope’s techniques in biometric research to measure the emotional impact of cinema advertising on audiences.

The NCM Media Networks and Innerscope Research study found that biometrics such as eye tracking could be applied to measure a consumer’s emotional engagement with product advertising through different media.
