FOREWORD

REJUVENATING NUS: BUILDING A SMART, SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS FOR ALL

2019 has been an eventful and fulfilling year for UCI. We have made progress across many fields andhave seen positive impacts of innovative technologies on our transport networks, building methods, safety and security operations, as well as our facilities management systems. Amongst our keymilestones are the opening of net-zero energy building SDE4 and a new Command Centre for CampusSecurity, and the launch of the autonomous NUSmart Shuttle trial. These developments have set thepace for the latest phase of campus rejuvenation UCI has embarked on, set to create a Smart, Safe andSustainable campus.

With the campus a microcosm of the Singapore city, changes in its infrastructure mirror Singapore’sshift towards building a smart nation. As a university with an active learning community, we see ourpotential as a testbed for solutions that can be scalable for Singapore and the region. Many of such newand exciting initiatives which tap on current and upcoming technologies have been planned. While theymay increase connectivity and efficiency on campus, we acknowledge that these initiatives should bedone with safety and sustainability in mind. Hence, the campus refreshing initiatives are complementedby a Spatial intelligence strategy and Sustainability and Climate Action Plan – to rethink and redesignthe way we use space on campus, as well as cool the NUS environment.

Our rejuvenation of the campus is not limited to our physical campus. In our pursuit of organizationalexcellence, we continue to look for ways to renew and refresh many of our existing processes. TheInnovation Excellence Transformation Unit (iETU) team set up in 2018 has been instrumental to helpingtheUCI cluster plant seeds for culture change and enable new capabilities. Highlights of their achievementscan be found on page 8 of this report – with more to come, I believe, as the team hands over the batonto the new batch of 2020! This annual report captures a year-in-review of the work UCI has done inreaching these visions and in leveraging on inter and intra office synergies within the cluster. Whilethe report itself is not exhaustive of all we have done in 2019, I hope that it provides you with asnapshot of the developments UCI has made on campus, as well as the people behind them.
