EPRI Research Initiative: Advanced Energy Communities

“Imagine the impact if there were thousands of these housing developments. Taken together with many

other changes in how energy is consumed will have a profound impact on the electric business”

- Ted Craver, CEO, Edison International, 2016

Advanced Energy Communities (AEC):

- Provide customer value through resilience, cost and comfort

- Demonstrate interaction of multiple customer resources with EE,

DR, PV, storage, electrification and EVs

- Achieve larger utility and societal goals such as decarbonization,

grid hardening and grid support

– Decarbonization & Electrification

– Customer Resiliency & Local Energy

– Community integration of energy technologies

– Customer data acquisition and analytics

A focus on resilience

Resiliency as a driver is growing, and fast becoming critical:

– Large scale catastrophic events like Hurricane Sandy and wildfires

– Emergence of technologies such as solar PV and battery storage

– Trend towards decentralization of utility system

Resilience for large customers is not new

– But they are now aiming to meet resilience needs with solar and storage instead of just fossil fuel generation

A new trend is small customers such as homeowners also opting for resilience due to affordability of local storage
