Improving energy efficiency means using less power while maintaining the same level of performance. Today, it is regarded as the quickest and most economical means for reducing CO

2 emissions.

By 2050, the demand for energy is expected to double due to population, economic, and industrial growth around the world. At the same time, we must halve greenhouse gas emissions so as to reduce carbon footprints and limit their catastrophic effects on global warming and climate change. As individuals, companies, industries, and government, we are all stakeholders with a commitment to safeguard our shared future through responsible energy consumption.

As the only global company that combines expertise in electrical technology and energy management, Schneider Electric has the tried-and-tested solutions for your buildings to meet environmental standards while optimizing operating costs.

By using energy more efficiently and cost-effectively, your buildings can also help reduce global warming

Like property location, energy efficiency has become a decisive differentiation factor

in asset valuation. Energy-friendly buildings can appreciate in value from:

• Higher safety and health standards for the inhabitants

• Compliance with building codes

• Reduced operating costs

• Ease in installing energy information systems

• Qualification for incentives from energy-saving measures

Accounting for almost 40% of the global energy consumption, buildings use up more energy resources than the vehicles on the roads. With rising energy prices and climate challenges, building’s stakeholders are increasingly aware of using energy more responsibly without compromising comfort levels. Introducing energy-efficiency measures not only reduces harmful emissions, but also saves money from lower utility bills and simplified building maintenance.

Quick payback from energy monitoring systemsWith relatively low investment in energy management solutions, your building can gain quick payback from reduced running costs. Facilities without energy management systems use up to eight times more power than new, energy efficient buildings. Going by the European Union’s regulations, buildings without energy monitoring systems are more expensive to run and likely to suffer capital value depreciation. As a global provider of complete solutions for efficient energy usage, energy management solutions from Schneider Electric are designed for both new and existing constructions for immediate savings.

Green Star – Design and Built ratings that add value, reduce risk and create trust

We use the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (PMVP) to measure and verify the energy savings we promise for our energy efficiency solutions:

• Pre-installation audit: baseline energy consumption data are measured and calculated.

• Post-installation audit: baseline data are compared with post-installation consumption data to determine actual savings.

Achieve measurable savings

NABERSNZ – Office building energy rating scheme to add value for tenants and owners. The introduction of NABERSNZ™ will raise the bar for energy performance in New Zealand office buildings.

The new energy measurement and rating scheme will help to reduce energy costs for tenants and enhrance building value for owners by measuring and rating the energy performance of New Zealand office buildings.

Green Star is a comprehensive, national, voluntary environmental rating scheme that evaluates the environmental attributes of New Zealand’s buildings using a suite of rating tool kits developed to be applicable to different building types and function.

The tools are developed by the NZGBC in partnership with the building industry to:• Establish a common language and standard of measurement for green buildings

• Promote integrated, whole-building design

• Raise awareness of green building benefits

• Recognise environmental leadership

• Reduce the environmental impact of development

The Green Star suite of rating tools was designed to match the key phases in a building life cycle to ensure early intervention for improved building outcomes.

The tools address the needs of specific building types, including:• office buildings,

• industrial buildings,

• education buildings,

• and other custom purpose buildings

• 4 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 45-59) signifies ‘Best Practice’

• 5 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 60-74) signifies ‘New Zealand Excellence’

• 6 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 75-100) signifies ‘World Leadership’

The Green Star – Office tool is complemented by the new NABERSNZ tool that assess the in-use energy performance of commercial office buildings.

Possible ratings

Based on the successful National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), the scheme will be introduced in New Zealand by EECA BUSINESS and delivered by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) in mid-2013.

NABERSNZ will measure and rate energy performance on a scale of 1 to 6 stars. A 5 star rating is considered market leading performance with a typical office building likely to rate between 2.5 and 3 stars.

To achieve a rating, qualified assessors will use 12 months of energy use data, and take in to account building area, location, computer density and hours of operation to rate performance.

The main principles of energy managementEnergy efficiency depends on collecting accurate data for analysis and action

Reliable information for confident actions Smart Panel gives you access to real-time data on installation status and energy consumption. By identifying unusual energy use or equipment malfunctions, you can take quick corrective actions. Schneider Electric energy management services provide reports that help reveal opportunities to improve efficiency, negotiate better utility rates, and set long-term sustainability strategies. You can even manage energy use remotely to ensure building comfort without compromising productivity or savings.

Cost-effective and reliable components You can capitalize on the familiar devices you have been using for your electrical distribution architecture. The Smart Panel extracts energy consumption data from standard electrical devices from Schneider Electric, known for their reliability, availability, and safety for people and property, and ease of installation, maintenance, and upgrading.

Before any energy saving actions can be taken, energy consumption is measured and analyzed while data on the installation quality is collected to understand how a building functions in terms of its energy and technical performances. Metering and monitoring form the basis of the Smart Panel system. When this data is shared with an energy management software, it forms a complete that solution simplifies the energy performance management of a building.

Reliable data collection at source is the beginning of savings

The Smart Panel solution automates energy usage data collection to eliminate time-consumingand error-prone manual meter reading. Automatic metering at the source lets you see exactlyhow and where the building is using energy. It also performs intelligent cross references ofenergy usage by zones (offices, lobby, storage, parking, etc.) with usage by type (lighting, heating, hot water for sanitation, etc.). Metering and monitoring form the basis of the SmartPanel solution.

Installed above the modular rail, Acti 9 Smartlink is the command centre for the Smart Panel, consolidating processes, storing all collected data, and transmitting it using Modbus protocol.

This modular smart interface opens access to all the essential energy and electrical status data, supporting better decision making. Acti 9 Control makes it easy to collect not only the readings from protection, monitoring, and metering units, but also from the thermostats, surge protections, and other devices.

As the key component for enabling energy efficiency, Acti 9 Smartlink gives highly precise load control via the same channels. It collects energy data by area to simplify energy management analysis and action, such as reallocation or maintenance scheduling.

PowerLogic multi-function meters monitor key distribution points 24 hours a day, from generators, substations, and service entrances, to mains, feeders, and loads. All essential data is accessible locally on each meter, or remotely through communications. The meters help improve network reliability by tracking real-time power conditions and power quality, monitoring network and equipment status, trending loads, and logging events and alarms. Class 0.5S to 0.2S accuracy and multi-tariff support enable energy efficiency applications, such as sub-metering, sub-billing, and cost allocation.
