Requirements for a Power Block
Smart MetersSmart Meters require a Power Management block which could
provide:
1. Flexible interface to support wide range of Input voltage
ranges
2. Improved efficiency at all load conditions
3. Enhanced Protection against Faults with Low Input Voltage
4. Improved EMI over the entire load
5. Eliminate noise
6. Ability to adjust output current protection based on output
power demand

What is PLC?? Basics
“Power-line communication (PLC) carries data on a conductor that is also
used simultaneously for AC electric power transmission or electric power
distribution to consumers”
Power Line Communication (PLC) is a communication technology
that sends data over existing power cables

How does PLC work?
• PLC systems operate by adding a modulated carrier signal
to the wiring system (AC or DC)
• Schemes for Modulating the Carrier Signal:
– (S)FSK : (Spread) Frequency Shift Keying
– BPSK : Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK)
– OFMD : Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

PLC Categories and Features
• Broadband PLC:
– Appropriate for high-speed broadband network connections such as
to the Internet
– Operates at higher frequencies (1.8–250 MHz)
– High data rates (up to 100s of Mbps) and is used in shorter-range
applications
• Narrowband PLC:
– Useful for applications requiring narrowband control or low-
bandwidth data collection where low cost and high reliability are
essential
– Operates at lower frequencies (3–500 kHz)
– Lower data rates (up to 100s of kbps), and has longer range (up to
several kilometers), which can be extended using repeaters
