Stratfords Dangerous "Smart Meters"

The huge increase in radiation around Stratford caused by smart meters andcity wide Wi Fi is a very serious long term danger to residents. The health ofsome people is likely to be severely compromised by exposure to theradiation. I have seen several of the meters and taken measurements nearhomes that have them, and I have found that strong radiation levels fromsmart meters are penetrating through house walls. They are exposingresidents to dangerous electro magnetic pollution inside their homes.

Of particular concern are homes where the meter is mounted on the samewall as a bedroom or a room where any occupant spends much time. Evenmore worrying are homes that have multiple meters mounted just outsideliving areas, such as some townhouses, some apartments and some multipleresidence units. Having multiple meters can cause even higher radiationlevels and more danger for the persons exposed.

It appears that each meter transmits radiation at different strengths and atdifferent time periods, depending on the distance the signal has to travel, thephysical barriers between the meter and the collection point, and the numberof meters using the meter as a stepping stone to pass their information alongthe line to the collection point.

The only way that a person will know the strength and danger of the radiationis by having the home and property measured with a good quality radiofrequency meter. Home yards and gardens have now become zones ofstrong pulsing microwave radiation. Children should be kept well away fromplaying near any smart meters. Even the radiation at a distance can be quitestrong and potentially harmful.

Two types of smart meters

Dan and I thought all of you may be interested in knowing that there are twotypes of smart meters. The one that is being installed across Ontario that Danand others are sensitive to and an other type, one that is hard wired to your

phone system. Although to date we have not been granted an exemption, ourlocal power company has agreed to install the hard wired non emf meter.They will pay for the meter and we are required to pay $50 per month for thededicated Bell phone line for the meter. This is a solution that will enable us tolive in our home and we will continue the battle regarding the exemption. My understanding is that the Clean Energy Act, intended to be passed thissession, exempts smart meters from any public discussion and, if this is indeed

Stratford - Death by Smart Meter and Wi Fi

After receiving the information below and seeing the photograph which isattached, I went to the house in Stratford, Ontario, to see this dying shrub formyself. I was shocked at the amount of harm caused to the plant. I was able tosee that the dying and sick leaves were much worse than the photograph shows.

The smart meter had only been installed about two months ago yet therewere several leaves that had completely withered up, as if they had beendried in place. Many other leaves showed signs of disease, with dozens ofsmall dry spots spread across the leaves. The damage spread out for atleast three feet from the smart meter. Leaves several feet away were veryhealthy, they were bright green with no signs of harm.

Another meter attached to the house next door was about eighteen feetaway and many leaves on the tree, which were close to that meter, werechanging colour.

I measured the microwave radiation between the houses and it constantly

spiked over two thousand microwatts per square metre. The radiation wasalmost continuous, one powerful spike after another. This City wide Wi Fi,smart meter system is very powerful, highly dangerous and must bestopped. Fighting this danger is part of my election platform in the StratfordMunicipal Election.

The smart meter systems (using microwave radiation) that are likely to be

installed in apartments throughout Ontario are already obsolete and shouldnot be considered for any future use. This is because of the health harm thatmay occur to persons who will be exposed to radiation from them. The dangerposed by microwave radiation is well known and well researched. Theadverse health effects have been known for many years. It would beirresponsible for the Ontario Government to force large numbers of thepopulation to be exposed to microwave radiation. A comparison of the danger,may be spraying all apartments in Ontario with small amounts of dangerouspoisons, irritants, harmful emissions and dangerous gasses. Yesterday I was visiting an apartment in Stratford where the electrical meters(previously installed when the building was new) were located in a room next tothe apartment. If, all of these meters were changed to smart meters emittingmicrowave radiation, this apartment, and others nearby, may becomeunliveable. All humans are sensitive to electro magnetic radiation. Thetremendous increase of electro magnetic radiation, because of wireless devices,is causing many people to become more sensitive and others are becomingelectro hyper-sensitive. If the Ontario Government contributes to the amount ofelectrical pollution, it may be very difficult for some people in Ontario to livenormal lives. Electro sensitivities, made worse by the Government installingsmart meters may lead to huge legal claims against the Province. If manypeople develop significant illnesses because of exposure to electro magneticradiation, the Provincial health system is likely to break down. Please do notunder estimate the dangers posed by this new wireless pollution.The cost to implement smart meters to all apartment buildings around Ontario willbe huge, with little likelihood of any major energy savings. In coming years, asmore knowledge about the health effects of microwave radiation emerge, there isa real chance that all these new Smart Meters will have to be replaced with

You stated that the Smart Meter will function on 2.4 gigahertz microwaveand you seemed convinced that I should be comforted by that fact,especially since you assured me that it was as safe as a babymonitor. 2.4 GHz is the same frequency that blasts us from cellphones, cordless phones, WiFi computers and WLAN in our homes and schools.

Now for a bit of a history lesson about the US Embassy in Moscow duringthe time period from 1953 to the 1970s into which the Russians beamed

You assured me that the criteria for the RF emissions of the SmartMeters is safe since it complies with Canada Safety Code 6; however, ourCanadian standards have drastically lagged behind the rapid growth ofthis new wireless technology rendering it effectively obsolete toprotect humans while creating an advantage for the telecommunicationsindustry and now apparently for Hydro 1 as well. Adding a Smart Meterto every single home in Ontario while you claim it is within standardsonly adds to every single persons radiation burden in the province.The Russians apparently have microwave standards for public exposurethat are 100 times more stringent that those in North America. why?

Dear Ms. Verschoor: I am writing to express my concerns regarding BC Hydro'splan to install 'smart' meters on every BC home. Although I applaud the effort toconserve energy and do as much conservation as I can, there are other issues atstake here. Namely, the fact that these meters use wireless transmitters, whichrely on signals in the microwave spectrum similar to cell phones and WiFicomputer systems. This band, between the 900 Mhz to 2.4 Ghz range, has beenshown in numerous independent international studies to have effects on humanhealth at power levels even below those commonly used to transmit these

signals. Our bodies rely on electrical signals to function; our cells, like anycommunication network, rely on them to repair and sustain themselves. Pulsed

radiation from microwaves disrupts cellular communication in biological systems.Some scientific studies have shown that cellular damage is done by repeatedexposure to microwave signals, including DNA strand breaks. While single strand

DNA breaks can be repaired by the body, double strand breaks cannot, andbecome genetic mutation that is passed on to offspring.

Aside from that, the experience with smart meters in California has not beenencouraging. Citizens have complained of numerous health issues, includingheart rate problems, high blood pressure, insomnia, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, etc. Part of the problem is that our civilization is currently layering one form of

electromagnetically-powered device over another, so the effects are cumulative.By introducing yet another layer with smart meters, we are setting the stage formore widespread chronic illness and eventually cancers of various kinds. Even

the recently released Interphone study, which has been largely discredited byreputable scientists, showed a 40% increase in certain types of brain tumours

with heavy use of cell phones. In fact the rate is much higher according tostudies whose methodology has been properly conducted, probably closer to a200% higher incidence of tumours.

The other issue in California has been that the smart meters apparently are notat all accurate and have resulted in numerous incidences of conflict between theutility company and clients who say they have been grossly overcharged. Theutility then relies exclusively on the smart meter reading, somehow assuming itcan't make a mistake, and holds customers to account. BC Hydro could be asking

for far more trouble than the minor savings these meters provide are worth, interms of disputes with customers.

Once again I see that our Liberal government is prepared to ram throughanother legislation designed to help the corporate sector through its new Clean

Energy Act, under the guise of being environmentally friendly. There is no opt-out clause in this Act for customers who may be sensitive to electromagneticradiation through smart meters. That is like saying, "You'll take our pollution andlike it whether you want it or not." That is hardly a "free market" economy, whenthere is no choice.

I am prepared to discuss other options for saving energy, and already have asolar hot water system installed so as to cut energy costs between May-October.

consideration of Bill 235, Energy Consumer Protection Act, 2010:

While the legislation appears primarily directed at landlord-tenant affairs asthey touch on matters of contract and remuneration, we recommend its"protective" intent should be admissive of other aspects to tenant and

consumer protection. After description below of some backgroundprecipitating our interest in making this submission before the Committee,further below please find some suggested legislative amendment.

Quite apart from one's view of the usefulness of "smart" metering and oflandlord-tenant relations, the actual apparatus and system prevalent inOntario has already proven dangerous to some, in regard to the recourse toradiofrequency for data transmission to and from the new meters. An everincreasing number of Ontarians are stricken with various degrees of what iscommonly called 'electrosensitivity', some so severely as to be called'electrohypersensitive'

Utilities deploying "smart" meters throughout Ontario rely on assurances thattheir radiofrequency emissions fall well within the bounds of existing federalstandards. But as so many now consider these standards obsolete in reliance onone crude measure of biological effect, thermally-based, any presumeddetermination of safety there from is suspect

Since the aformentioned 2007 report, there has been very much morescholarly output attesting to the dangers of wireless. Very much material inmore popular media has increasingly been published as well

Currently, at least two electricity providers in Ontario are known to offer tomove meters away from where it is considered harmful by the consumer,except that a substantial fee (e.g. $1000) is exacted from the consumer. Theconsumer possibly if inadvertently harmed by "smart" meter methods,should not be required to pay to escape possible danger. Many methods ofconveying even the currently required daily meter readings are imaginable,from visual reading (capacity for which meters are legislatively compelled toretain) and even automatic telephone reporting, to actual shifting of themeters to safer locations. Please note that one Swedish study trackingstudies of electrosensitives since the 1980s, shows that a linear increase in theproportion of sufferers is on track to attain 50% of the population by 2017.

This is a major developing problem utilities would do well, with governmentenablement and encouragement, to address well in advance of this projectedpossible avalanche of associated suffering. Daryl Vernon
