What is the Smart Grid?

The 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) lays out a national policy for the Smart Grid in the U.S

The Energy Independence and Security Act gives NIST

“primary responsibility to coordinate development of a framework that includes protocols and model standards for information management to achieve interoperability of smart grid devices and systems…”

Congress directed that the framework be “flexible, uniform, and technology neutral”

Use of these standards is a criteria for federal Smart Grid Investment Grants

APEC Regulatory Cooperation Advancement Mechanism

ARCAM Dialogue on Smart Grid Interoperability Standards – May 2011 in Big Sky, Montana, USA

– Many APEC economies are promoting Smart Grid to help achieve environmental sustainability, energy security and economic growth.

– Produced consensus on actions for APEC economies to advance the deployment of Smart Grid and prevent the emergence barriers to trade and investment in Smart Grid technologies.
