INTERNET OF THINGS (IOFT)

With the growth of the Internet of Things (IofT) and smart cities, everything from our mobile phone to lamp posts to traffic lights can now create vast amounts of data.

But, it is only with the correct analytical skills, joined up thinking and political will that this data can used to help solve our cities problems.

Town planners are one of the groups looking at how this information can be used effectively, in order to work smarter and add value to the decision making process.

create new challenges and opportunities.

Branded Cities Western Hemisphere will face an increasing

trend of deurbanization creation of the historic center and

Suburbanization Urban Sprawl - highways and ring road,

network city with suburban areas and cities along the

highways created.

Emerging urban layouts will have a tremendous impact on

smart city development in the future, For example- the ring

road motorway, living areas growing outside the ring road as

Most urban futurologists say that more than 90% of the world population growth will be in developing countries, and that urban poverty will be the fastest growing trend in the world.

They also say that the disparity between the poor and the rich will continue to increase. But is a great task for the developing countries to accommodate the poor people in urban development.

URBAN INDIA

Working population is the driving factor in growing urban population by more than 1.23 times by 2020 i.e. 465 Million which is 35% percent of total population and is the largest youth workforce in India’s Urbanization Opportunities by 2020.

Smart City Attributes Government is trying to address the urban problems by investing in smart city initiatives. The Ministry of Urban Development under Central Government is the governing body for all smart city related work Smart Environment, Smart Transportation, Smart Energy, Smart Health, Smart Education, Smart Buildings, Smart IT & Communication, and Smart Governance.

Multiple foreign countries are looking forward to invest and participate in the development of smart cities in India.

Spain to sign MoU to develop Delhi into smart city.

US agreed to develop Ajmer, Allahabad and Visakhapatnam as smart cities

Japan to develop Varanasi into a smart city

Germany offering its assistance in developing three smart cities (names yet to be decided)

France keen to invest in creation of smart cities in Nagpur and Himachal Pradesh in sectors like power and transport.

Singapore building smart city in Andhra Pradesh India, 10 times bigger than itself along with providing training to officials of the state government.

Smart Cities and Industry Integration Smart Buildings: At least 50% of buildings will be green and intelligent, built with building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV); 20% of the buildings will be net zero energy buildings.

Smart Technology: Intelligent communications systems connecting home, office, iPhone and car on a single wireless IT platform.

Smart Infrastructure: Multimodal transport hubs providing air, rail, road connectivity to other megacities. Megatrends in parallel industries will influence core smart city components and present opportunities for participants

Smart Energy: About 20% of the energy produced in a city will be renewable (wind, solar).

Smart Grid: Infrastructure to enable real-time monitoring of power flow and provide energy surplus back to the grid.

Satellite Towns: The main city center will merge with several satellite towns to form one megacity.

Buildings – utilities and services such as water, sanitation, electricity, telecommunication,

It is People with wants and needs – individuals, families, specific groups such as children, youth, women, elders, differently able, visitors etc.

It is natural areas with plants, animals, insects etc.

It is many other things under the roads such a pipes carry water, sewer, drain water, power etc.

SMART

The question that merits an answer is what makes a community smart

It is the wisdom to make community collective and make collective decision at the crucial moment, and knowing how to make the best out of the bad situation.

Maybe it is the ability of the community to take as many aspects as possible into consideration before deciding on the future course of action.

Of course, if the community is smart and successful, it is hard to pinpoint what exactly is responsible for that community success and wellbeing.

Truth be told, it is far easier to notice what these smart community don’t do, and arrive to a conclusion as to what is to be avoided.

As long as the community circumvent the negative things, the rest will come naturally.

Work with local knowledge – Neighbourhood Resource Centre – experts and specialists at your work at the same time be resource persons to take part in raise awareness and build knowledge among your neighbours

The challenges for urban poverty –from pollution to crime are not negotiable. Many cities are finding successful solutions.

The concept-“SMART CITIES” in the West recognize the importance of (a) good governance, (b) basic services for all, (c) Technology, and (d) streets and public open spaces where women and children feel safe.

Also recognize that better cities can help to (a) mitigate global challenges such as climate change, and (b) by promoting energy conservation and environmental sustainability.

APPLICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC): it is possible to have remote control of all home energy monitors over the internet incorporating a simple and friendly user interface.

Lighting control system

Occupancy-aware control system: it is possible to sense the occupancy of the home using smart meters and environmental sensors like CO2 sensors, which can be integrated into the building automation system to trigger automatic responses for energy efficiency and building comfort applications.

Appliance control and integration with the smart grid and a smart meter, taking advantage, for instance, of high solar panel output in the middle of the day to run washing machines.

Security: a household security system integrated with a home automation system can provide additional services such as remote surveillance of security cameras over the Internet, or central locking of all perimeter doors and windows.
