GLOBAL CHALLENGE

challenge opportunity local intent patents precedents problems approach conclusion

what kinds of health/societal/environmental issues go along with stoves?

one third of the world’s population cook over a open flame

open fires produce a lot of smoke

approximately 1.4 million people die per year from disease related to indoor air pollution (3 people per second)

GLOBAL CHALLENGE

what kinds of health/societal/environmental issues go along with stoves?

time and money spent gathering fuel open fires are one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world

deforestation from gathering fuelburn danger from exposed flames

GLOBAL CHALLENGE

challenge opportunity local intent patents precedents problems approach conclusion

the 8 millennium development goals

the Millennium Declaration promotes a comprehensive approach that tackles a broad range of challenges simultaneously.

by 2015, the world aims to have achieved eight goals for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.

improved cook stoves address all 8

OPPORTUNITY

contributing to make cooking safer

Amigos for Christ has 160 Nicaraguan families in need of cook stoves in Villa Cantalina

by SMALL RED TILE

LOCAL

challenge opportunity local intent patents precedents problems approach conclusion

the lifestyle of a typical Nicaraguan family

men are often not in the house, women are responsible for all of the cooking as well as childcare in 5-6 person families

families are usually very poor ($1/day) and have no access to electricity

they currently cook over wood fires, but the wood is running out

there is very little access to alternate fuel sources except waste rice husks

by SMALL RED TILE

DESIGN INTENT

challenge opportunity local intent patents precedents problems approach conclusion

Design a stove that runs on rice husk that is safe and culturally accepted

our goal to overcome these challenges

PROBLEMS

challenge opportunity local intent patents precedents problems approach conclusion

not everthing is perfect

BATCH CONTINUOUS

this design needs a battery to operate. most people in nicaragua cannot afford batteries

approximately every 30 minutes, the flame goes out. therefore the batch needs to be dumped every 30 minutes

this design requires constant tapping to produce an even flame throughout the cook time. the flame is also relatively unstable

constant refilling is required approximately every 5 minutes to keep an even flame. the char also needs to be removed during this time span
