Small Heath School Small Heath School & Sixth Form Centre is a Foundation and

an Inner-City split coeducation 11-18 comprehensive school. It was established in 1983 by the amalgamation as part of the re-organisation of secondary education in Birmingham.

The majority of Small Heath School pupils are from ethnic minority backgrounds which can be used as a starting point for to generates an appreciation and awareness of

language diversity and different cultural values. The population of the school is 1250, 600 pupils are girls

and the rest are boys. There are 215 pupils in each year group

Classes are set according to learning ability- high, middle and low division.

Information about the Lower School

It was built as a Birmingham board school in 1892 by architects Martin & Chamberlain

It has 18 classrooms and 4 ICT suits. A big hall in the middle , front play ground and big dining hall. 75% of KS 3 ( Year 7-9) lessons and 25% of KS 4 (only Year 10)

take place at Lower school. Subject taught in this building are – Maths , English, ICT, History,

Geography, Religious Studies and Modern Foreign Languages.

Upper School SiteThe upper school was recently built

It has: • 30 classrooms

• 6 ICT• 3 music suits

• 1 Big drama studio• 3 Arts suits

• 2 big Food Technology suits• 4 big Design Technology workshops

• 2 textiles workshops suits• 1 Big dining hall• 1 Big sport hall• 1 Big library • Swimming pool • And 1 gym.

More about upper school

• This site cater for 25% of KS3 lessons : Science , Physical Studies, Design Technology, Art, Drama and Music and all A Level courses.

• 100% of Sixth form – KS 5 ( Y12 &13 )and KS 4 Y11 plus 75% of Y10 lessons are taught at Upper School and this will include – Maths , English, ICT, History, Geography, Religious Studies and

Modern Foreign Languages and all the above subject plus All the A Level Courses.

Curriculum

• Classes are set according to learning ability- division 1,2 and 3. In Div. 1 &2 the number of pupils in each class is between 25-30. In

div 3 because their learning ability is not as good as it should be so number of pupils in each class is between 12-20 pupils.

• The National Curriculum - Key Stage 3 • All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 study the following courses:

• Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, Science. • Foundation Subjects: History, Geography, RE, Art & Design, Music,

Drama,• Bengali/French/Urdu/Spanish, Physical Education (incorporating

outdoor education), • Resistant Materials, Food Technology and Textiles Technology,

Information and • Communication Technology.

• Creative Minds curriculum for Y7 only.• In addition all pupils follow a personal development programme

comprising Health and Social Education, Careers and Enterprise Education, Library Skills, Religious Studies and Citizenship.

The National Curriculum - Key Stage 4 • All pupils follow courses leading to GCSE in English and Mathematics,

and in Science all • pupils study courses leading to at least two GCSE or BTEC

qualifications. • After option choices during Y9, pupils will be involved in studying a

range of subjects from the following groups. • Languages: GCSE: French, Urdu, Bengali

• Humanities: GCSE: History, Geography, Islamic Studies. 13• General: GCSE: Art, Expressive Arts, PE, ICT

• Vocational: Applied GCSE Leisure and Tourism / Business Studies • BTEC Science / ICT / Hospitality

• ASDAN: Bronze/Silver Award Programme • OCR: Basic Computing and Literacy.

• Technology: GCSE: Resistant Materials, Food Technology and Textiles Technology

Exams:KS3- End of topic tests KS4• End of topic tests • 2 mock GCSE exams 1 end of Y10 and 1 a month before their

final exams.• The final (external exam) GCSE exam will be at the end of Y11.• Pupils will be allowed to re-sit this exam within one year from

sitting their first exam.

Reports to parents:• One report per year • 5 monitoring progress reports (end of each term)

Sixth Form

• AS, A2, BTEC, Applied GCE courses, Cambridge TEC and Edexcel First Award and some

• GCSE retakes are offered. • A2 and Level 3 courses offered are in: Art and Design, Bengali,

Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Design Technology, English Literature, Extended Project, French, Geography, History,

Information Technology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Media Studies, Physics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology,

Statistics, Textiles and Urdu.

Classroom Expectations

• Treat everyone with respect and always use appropriate language.

• Pupils/students will arrive on time• Planners and equipment will be on the desk.

• Listen carefully to the teachers and follow their instructions. • Avoid distractions/distracting others.

• If you are in need of help or support always ask. • Use of any personal electrical equipment is not

allowed. • When dismissed, leave the room in a tidy state.

Erasmus creativity clubs1. Students produced a logo and a poster and led a Year 7 assembly by

14th   December 2015 to decide on the winning logo  which was sent to Italy.

2. All  Year 7 CMC groups (230 students) have been involved in completing various tasks for the ECLIPSE Erasmus+ project during normal school lessons and have been given  the opportunity to produce good quality work and enjoy working creatively in teams.

4. Students produced materials and own stories for the 'Knowing Yourself in Art and Painting'.

3. Students carried on with the next section of the project which focused  on producing presentations and materials about a British Historical Icon or personality.

6. A Year 9 group (29 students) were involved in the pen pal exchanges.

School Meals

• 2 Canteens, 2 cold food bars and 1 hot food shop at Upper school• Pupils can have breakfast, morning snacks and lunch in school.

Festivals and holidays• School year consist of 3 terms and each term is 12 weeks and

every 6 weeks there will be a weeks half-term holiday.• We celebrate Christmas and Easter holiday when the school is

closed for Staff and pupils • We also celebrate Islam festivals when the school will closed for

pupils and Muslim colleagues only.

Strengths and weakness in our school

Strengths • Our school slogan is “we are a family”.• We have pupils and teachers from different parts of the

world. Therefore, we and our pupils have the opportunities to know a lot about these counties even before visiting them.

Weaknesses• It runs over to sites which can be very challenging sometimes.• We don’t have a green play ground (grass field).
