Small Group Questions August 25, 2018 Series: (Stand alone message) Message: “Why Baptism?” This stand alone message will be given on the day of our annual, outdoor baptism. Since it is a large event, we like to be clear about what baptism means and what it doesn’t mean. Not all churches observe baptism the same way nor is the meaning of baptism the same for all. We will not interact with every different observance of baptism in the world but we will seek to be clear about our (Washington Heights) understanding of the Biblical teaching about baptism. This day is also an opportunity for us to invite people to follow Jesus in a clear command He gave those who put saving faith into Him. We do not believe anyone should be pressured into baptism but for those who have trusted Jesus, there is no reason to wait or forgo baptism. (Questions to get everyone to participate) 1. What is your favorite custom/tradition to observe? Why that one? 2. Do you think customs: 1) often help us to remember important things, or; 2) often lose their meaning and become empty of real meaning? (Questions based on the primary text) Read Romans 6:1-7. 3. In this passage, Jesus death is mentioned often. What is the connection Paul makes from Jesus’ death to our ‘death to sin?’ 4. Based on what Paul shares here, what happens to someone who places their faith in Jesus? How is Paul using the word “baptism” to communicate what happens when they come to faith? 5. Has/Have your experience(s) with baptism (either participating or observing) been positive or negative? How so? 6. What does baptism mean to you personally? 7. If you have been baptized, what difference has it made in your journey inside of faith? If you have not been baptized, what is keeping you from taking that step?
