Bob is at it again, building another paper model free from:https://papermodel.jp/akagi144.html.ThismodelisontheAkagiJapaneseaircraftcarrierlost at the Battle ofMidway in 1942. Building ship modelsnever leaves your thoughts entirely, and Yasenjoysthatactivity–itkeepshimyoung. ThenextphotobelowisaviewthatYasis fortunate enough to enjoy every day of SanPedroharbor, all the shipspassingby, aswellas the excellent view of the USS Iowabattleship. TheL.A.MaritimeMuseum,whereYas spends time working on ships for themuseum (his magnificent USS Nimitz aircraftcarrierscratchbuiltmodel isonexhibitat themuseum) is also visible from his balconywindow, which is just barely shown in themiddleofthephotototheextremeright. The Ports of Call area just above themuseum is now being totally renovated withlots of construction going on. The museumbuildingitselfwillremain, sincethebuildingisanational historic building and cannot be torndown.EvenduringtheCODIV-19pandemic,theconstruction is preceding, so maybe in a fewyears the Ports of Call in San Pedro, the USSIowa and the L.A. Maritime Museum will be aplacetovisitandspendaniceday. The next two photos show theworkshop where Yas spends his time buildingmodels, all very neat and tidy (I wish myworkshopwasasneat!)

Don is slowlycontinuing work on hisRoebuck and hasincluded a photo of thelowergundeckwiththeupper gun deck fullyframed – a last easyview of the lower gundeckcannonfullyrigged, since the subsequentplanking of the uppergundeckhasresultedina very difficult viewingofthegunsbelow. should keep the picture above in his inventory in order to prove that the cannon areactuallyrigged. Note the messy workbench and the HO train tracks above the work desk.Unfortunately,HOtrainlayouts, evensmallshelflayouts, takeacertainamountofefforttokeepclean, which I amnotverygoodatdoing! Fortunately, shipmodelbuilders canputtheireffortsintoacase, whichisEASYtokeepcleanandalsoprotectstheshipmodelfromanyformof“accident”. Oneaspectoftheconstructionisnotedin thephoto to the right. Thebowareahasa“riser” section justprior to thebulkheadbeakheadshown in thesmallpieceofwoodby thestem in the photo. Morework is going to bedone to remove the planking that has beeninstalled to reveal the “beam” which you canjust barely see – the line of decking in themiddleof thephotowillberemoved. It is difficult to explain and I apologize if the reader finds it difficult tocomprehendwhatIamtryingtoexplain.Thisareaoftheshipisveryintricatewithallthe

Much to my surprise, I decided to check the Internet and found a company thatmakesanaccurate,3D-printedBrodiegalleystovefor19thcenturyshipsintheperfectscalefor me. The web address is: https//www.scalemates.com/kits/model-monkey-mm64-brodiegalley-brodie-galley-stove-19th-century-ships--1133822. The cost ofwaswhopping$15.00plusshippingandhandling. TheBrodiestovewasreceivedafewdaysagoandisshownonthephotoherealongwith the rudder iron repair that had to be done. Caremust be taken, I found out, whenmaking the rudder irons. The “posts” ontherudderhingepulledouttheironsfromthehull(Ithink)andtwohullrudderironshavetobereinstalled.Itisdifficult, sinceIcannotremovetherudderfromthemodelwithout cutting off the tiller, that wouldrequire I make a new rudder, since thetiller is alreadyglued inplace (alsodue tothe fact that thedeckbeams for theupperdeckwerespeciallymadetomakesurethetillerwas just underneath them, etc.) TheBrodie stove (as received – all the “sprue”hastobecutoff)andtheoffendingrudderironsareshowninthephoto. The latest update from Bob isthat he has completed his 1:700Trumpeterwaterlineplasticmodel (483parts, incl. 12 photo-etch) of thebattleship BB-34 USS New York.
