The osteotomy should be tapped in dense bonefollowing the final profile drill used in the preparation

of the osteotomy.

D1 bone typically requires that the full length of the osteotomy

be prepared with the tap.

D2 bone, as well as bone with a thick inferior cortical plate, might also

require full-length preparation.

The used of a tap drill is suggested in D3 bone when one (or two)

sides of the osteotomy are in contact with a lateral cordical platequality.

D1: Dense Cortical

anterior mandible<Advantage> Highest bone contact area / Short healing time

<Disadvantage> Bone-heating

D2: Porous Cortical Coarse Trabecular

anterior/posterior mandible, anterior maxilla

<Advantage> High bone contact area / Easily achievable initial rigid

fixation

<Disadvantage> May require osteotomy thread forming or tapping.





D3: Porous Cortical Fine Trabecular anterior maxilla, posterior maxilla/mandible

<Advantage> Faster osteotomy preparation

<Disadvantage> Longer progressive loading period to improve bone

quality.

D4: Fine Trabecular posterior maxilla

<Advantage> No need osteotomy thread forming

<Disadvantage> Most difficult bone quality for obtaining initial righd

fixation
