Serbia before Milosevic…

• Before Slobodan Milosevic was elected a president, Josip Broz Tito, was the leader of Yugoslavia

• After Tito’s death in 1980, the states of Croatia and Slovenia started to fight to become self-governing countries

• However, Serbia was the political power and did not want change• This created many riots and destruction • Serbians reported that they were treated unfairly and did not like the

number of Albanians living in their area

Events leading up to Milosevic’s rule…

1974- Changes to the Yugoslav constitution allow the Serbian provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina to become independent

1984- Milosevic enters politics becoming the leader of the local Belgrade Communist Party

1986- Milosevic is elected leader of the League of Communists of Serbia and pursues his Serbian nationalist agenda

1987- Makes an iconic speech in Kosovo and overnight becomes a spokesman for Serbs across the federation

1988- Organizes rallies and uses media to promote ideas. He replaces the leaders in Kosovo and Vojvodina with his own supporters

1989- Becomes leader of Serbia

Fall of power…

• On July 27,2000, the authorities announced that an early election was to be held on September 24

• An anti-regime youth movement led the campaign to end the regime and bring about a more democratic one

• Opposition parties in Serbia formed the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in coalition with Vojislav Kostunica as the candidate to confront Milosevic

• The vote took place on September 24 but the votes were tampered with • The results were declared false immediately after Milosevic was

overthrown and the new results declared shortly afterwards, thus making Kostunica the winner of the election

• The downfall of Slobodan Milosevic’s regime happened on exactly October 5, 2000

• Milosevic was then charged with crimes against humanity and sent to prison
