Workshop on “Career Awareness” for DIPLIS Students

A one day workshop on Career Awareness was organized by

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme of SLLA

which was held on 23rd November, 2019 at the seminar room,

Colombo public library. The resource person of the workshop was

Mrs. K.R.N. Harshani, Career Guidance Counselor, Certified Neuro

-Linguistic Practitioner (The American Board of NLP - USA) and

Senior Assistant Librarian, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

There were 21 DIPLIS students from different study centers

participated in the workshop. The workshop aims to educate

learners about personal career development and to help the

students to understand the importance of setting educational

and career goals.

Workshop content includes exercises on self-knowledge with an

emphasis on personality, values, interests and abilities, guidance

for job applications (how to write a resume, interview skills, and

personality development skills etc.), study skills, goal-setting and

motivation, self-esteem, time-management, leadership, life skills

series, communication etc.

A revision seminar was organized for DIPLIS level III

students at Badulla centre on 8th December, 2019. End of

the seminar students appreciated the lecturers of the

centre. Also the same day lectures commenced for new

DIPLIS level III batch (2019/20) at the Badulla center.

Revision seminar for DIPLIS Level II students at Colombo

centre was held on 12th October, 2019 at Colombo Public

Library. There were more than 10 lecturers who

participated in the seminar.

3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management (ICLIM -2019) organized by Department of

Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with IFLA Asia and Oceania Section,

School Library Development Section of Ministry of Education and Research Centre for Social Sciences -Faculty of

Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on 26th and 27th November, 2019 at University of Kelaniya, Sri

Lanka. This year the conference organized under the theme of “Digital Transformation and Reinvention of Future

Ready Libraries”. Mr. Sanjay k. Bihani , Chair - IFLA Division V (Regions - Asia and Oceania, Africa, Latin America

and Carabians) and Member of IFLA Governing Board and Committee delivered keynote speech. There were

many professionals, lecturers and students in the field of Library and Information Science presented papers and

participated in the conference.

Tribute to the late Ms. Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham

Ms. Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham, the Immediate Past President of Sri

Lanka Library Association (SLLA) passed away peacefully on 25th

December, 2019.

Her untimely demise is no doubt a great loss to the Jaffna University

where she was serving as the Librarian, to the SLLA and the library and

information science field in the country. Ms. Arulanantham served as the

President of SLLA from 2017 to 2019. Graduated from University of Jaffna

she received her postgraduate qualifications from the prestigious

Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC), Bangalore, India.

She joined University of Jaffna as an Assistant Librarian in 1989 and

became the Librarian in 2012. She also served as the President of

University Librarians Association (ULA) in 2015-16. Establishing

Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham Award for overall best performance in

DIPLIS programme of SLLA, opening SLLA corners in major libraries for the

benefit of the SLLA students and librarians, conducting seminars and

workshops for the benefit of librarians are some of her noteworthy

achievements as the President of SLLA.

University Librarians Association (ULA) in 2015-16. Establishing Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham Award for overall

best performance in DIPLIS programme of SLLA, opening SLLA corners in major libraries for the benefit of the

SLLA students and librarians, conducting seminars and workshops for the benefit of librarians are some of her

noteworthy achievements as the President of SLLA.

Ms. Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham has written fifteen books on library science at academic level, along with

several publications in the form of research articles, conference papers etc. Her contribution to the general social

welfare is not only in the field of library science but also in disciplines including gender studies, child psychology,

media studies and literature.

She is the member of the editorial board to the Journal ‘Bibliotherapy Review’ published by University of Wroclaw,

Poland. Her contribution to LIS profession at local and national level is immense. She was the visiting Lecturer in

library and information science, development studies and population studies for post graduate courses at

University of Jaffna and undergraduate course at University of Keleniya. She has contributed in advisory and

consultancy level to several public and school libraries.

She is the founder of Foundation for Library Awareness (FOLA) which is a non-profit organization, working at

grass root level and she served as Director of Knowledge Stimulation Center, which is a new service design to help

LIS professionals to stimulate different aspects of viewers through exhibits. Much of her spare time and energy is

spent in developing reading promotion programmes, organizing workshops and exhibitions through these

organizations.

Her work has helped the community and school based libraries to classify, organize, and index their collections.

She viewed libraries as an important and integral tool for knowledge based social progress. She believed that

library buildings do not mean much if the public does not access the books. This process led to found the non-

profit Foundation for Library Awareness with the aim of promoting reading amongst the public particularly,

amongst children and youth.

She was a courageous leader who faced her challenges without fear and a brave woman who took up challenges,

acted boldly. In spite of the problems and obstacles faced, she maintained order, her actions and commitment

made a difference.

Though she may not be with us physically, we know that she will always be in our hearts and minds.

May her soul rest in peace !.

National Library & Documentation Services Board conducted National Library

Research Symposium on Library and Information Science (NatlibSYMPO 2019)

in collaboration with Asia & Oceania section of IFLA on 31st October 2019 at

the National Library premises, Colombo. NatlibSYMPO 2019 is the third of its

series which is annually organized by Library Research Division to provide an

excellent opportunity for researchers to discuss the issues and challenges

relating to the fields of Library & Information Science and Social Sciences.

The conference provided a platform for gathering a pool of academics,

professionals, researchers and students to share and discuss new knowledge

created in the field that will positively reinforce the functionality of library field.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Library, Information and Documentation

in a Context of Transformation" was chosen to address many aspects of

growing importance of the value of libraries in the country. R. Rathnayake,

the Chief Guest of the symposium and Prof. Rohan Samarajiva,

was invited to deliver the keynote address. The inspiring keynote

speech delivered on “Transformation of Library Services” was an eye

opener to all who gathered at the symposium.

A large number of participants representing various types of libraries

such as public, academic, school and special libraries attended the

symposium. The symposium cherished with presentations of about

twenty one selected research papers covering a wide range of

subjects relevant to theme of the symposium. They were presented in

four technical sessions chaired by experts in research arena, such as

Emeritus Prof. K. A. P. Siddhisena from Department of Demography,

University of Colombo, Dr.Ruwan Gamage, Senior Lecturer, NILIS,

University of Colombo, Mr. Prasanna Ranaweera, Director, NILIS,

University of Colombo and Mr. M.Norman Ravikumar, Senior Assistant

Librarian from Eastern University.

Valedictory address was delivered by Prof. W. A. Weerasooriya, Senior

Lecturer, Department of Library and Information Science, University of

Kelaniya. The inspiring presentations and fruitful discussions were

conducted in a high-level platform for formulated possible guidelines

for future development.

මගහෝත්සවය පැවැත්වූ රතර, ඒ සඳහා සභාපති සේපත් චමි් ද

ජයසිංහ මැතිතුමා, උපසභාපති බ් දුල ර් ජ් ඉග් ගපරුම

මැතිතුමා ඇතුළු ම් ත්රී මණ්ඩලය හා සභාගේ ග් කේතුමිය වය

කුුණදුනී ගුණතිලක මහත්මිය සහභාගී වූහ. එහිදී සාහිතය කලා

කරුව් උගදසා ප්රණාම 5 ්ත පිනැයැමූ රතර, සාහිතය ප්රණාම

සේමාය ලාභී කලාකරුව් සමග ගහෝමාගම ප්රාගශය ය සභාගේ

සභාපතිතුමා, උප සභාපතිතුමා ඇතුළු ම් ත්රී මණ්ඩලය සහ

සභාගේ ග් කේතුමිය සමග ලබාගත් සමූහ ඡායාරූපය ගේ සමග

කිරිමැටියාන මහජන පුස්තකාලය

1972 වර්ෂයේ දී කිරිමැටියාන ගම් කාර්ය සභාව විසින් ප්රයශයයේ ගගුනන් ා ා

බුශධිමුනන් බිහි කිරියම් අරමුණ යෙරදැරිව තම කාර්යාලයේ කුඩා යකොටසක

පුස්තකාල යස්වාව ආරම්භ කර ඇත. එහි පුයරෝගාමියා වයයයන් එවක ගම්

කාර්ය සභායේ සභාෙති වූ එම්.එම්. මහීොල රත්නයස්කර මා තා කටයුුන

කර තියේ. ක්රමයයන් පුස්තකාලයේ කටයුුන වර්නනය ීමමත් සම

පුස්තකාලයේ ොඨක සමාජයේ ක්රියාකාත්ත්වය මත වත්මන් ස්නානයේ

යගොඬනැගිල්ල තනා ජනතාවයේ යස්වයට විවෘත කරන ලදී.

යමම පුස්තකාලය ග්රන්න 22,466, ස රා 06, පුවත්ෙත් 33 කින් යුුන එකුනවක්

ඔස්යස් ජනතාවට අවයය යතොරුනු ලාාදීම සහා ා අවස්නාව සලසා දී ඇති

අතර ආරම්භයේ දී ාැා ැර දීම, විමර්යන සා පුවත්ෙත් අංය යලස

ක්රියාත්මකව ක්රමයයන් විකායය ීම එම අංය සහා ා මමා අංයය ා ා යතොරුනු

තාක්ෂණය යන අංය ද එක්ව යලස ත්රෛභාෂා වන්න් යතොරුනු ලාා දීමට

දුෂ්කර දුර ාැා ැර ප්රයශයවල ජනතාවට යතොරුනු ලාා දීයම් අිලලාෂයයන්

පුස්තකාලය සහා ා රනයක් සා යෙොත්ෙත් ලාා දී ජංගම පුස්තකාල යස්වය

ආරම්භ කර වයාප්ති යස්වාව වඩාත් පුළුල් කර ඇත.

දුෂ්කර දුර ාැා ැර ප්රයශයවල ජනතාවට යතොරුනු ලාා දීයම් අිලලාෂයයන් පුස්තකාලය

සහා ා රනයක් සා යෙොත්ෙත් ලාා දී ජංගම පුස්තකාල යස්වය ආරම්භ කර වයාප්ති

යස්වාව වඩාත් පුළුල් කර ඇත.

කිරිමැටියාන මා ජන පුස්තකාලය ප්රයශයයේ ීවවත් වන සමම වයස් කා්ඩඩයකටම

අයත් වන යලස අනයාෙකක, සංස්කෘතික වයයයන් විවින වූ වැඩසටා න් ක්රියාත්මක

කරනු ලායි. තවද මමා ොඨකයින් යවනුයවන් සමම ාදාදා දිනයකදී ම කතන්දර ෙැය

වැඩසටා න අඛ්ඩඩව ෙවත්වා යගන යනු ලාන්යන් එම ප්රයශයයේ යෙරොසල් සා

ප්රානමික යරේණි ආ ආරාර්ය ම්ඩඩලයේ සම්ෙත් දායකත්වය ඇතිවය. තවද ොසල්

අනයාෙනය ලාන දු දැරියන් සහා ා විය ෂ අනයාෙකක සම්මන්ෛණ ද සමම වයස්

කා්ඩඩයකටම අයත් වන ආකාරයේ යශයන, වැඩමුළු ද වාර්ෂිකව අඛ්ඩඩව ක්රියාත්මක

වන අා ස් දුර(ගූගල් මැප්) යස්වාව ද මුල් වරට පුස්තකාලය ුනළින් ආරම්භ කරන ලදි.

2007 වර්ෂයේ සිට වයඹ ෙමාත් ොලන යදොර්තයම්න්ුනව වාර්ෂිකව සංවිනානය කරනු

ලාන යා ොහම පුස්තකාලය යත්ත්යම් තර යයන් 2008,2009 වර්ෂයන් හීදී යදවන, යතවන

ා ා සිේවන ස්නාන ලාා ෙමායත් යා ොහම පුස්තකාල 10 අතර රැයහන්නට ලැබුණ අතර

2015 වර්ෂයේ දී III වන යරේණි ආයේ තර යයන් ප්රනම ස්නානය හිමි කර ගන්නට සමත් විය.

2017 ජූන් වන විට II වන යරේණි ආයට ෙත් වූ කිරිමැටියාන මා ජන පුස්තකාලය 2018,2019

වර්ෂයේ I, II යරේණි ආ අතර ෙවත්වන ලද පුස්තකාල තර යයන් ප්රනම ස්නානයට ෙත්

වූයේ කාර්ය ම්ඩඩලයේ ා ා ප්රායශය ය සභායේ ර්ර්ණ දායකත්වය ද මතය.

2018 වර්ෂයේ, ශ්රී ලංකා යතොරුනු ා ා සන්කයේදන තාක්ෂණ කයයෝතාතායතනය (ICTA) ා ා ශ්රී ලංකා ජාතික පුස්තකාල

ා ා ප්රයල්ඛන යස්වා ම්ඩඩලය ා ා එක්ව “ඩිතාටල් පුස්තකාල වයාෙෘතිය” ා රා ා යාවත්කාලීන සංස්කරණ මුහුණුවරකින්

යුත් ර්ර්ණ පුස්තකාල ස්වයංක්රීයකරණ ෙශනතියකින් ද නීමන තාක්ෂණි ආක යමවලම් ා ා යස්වාවන්යගන් ද සරිරි නව

තාක්ෂණි ආක අත්දැකිමක් සහා ා යදොරටු විවර කර ඇත. යම් වන විටත් නීමන ගොංග සමඟින් අන්තර්ජාලයේ

සැරිසැත්මටත් අන්තර්ජාලය ා රා ා පුවත්ෙත් නැරඹීමට ා ා යතොරුනු ගයේයනය කිත්මටත් දු වන් සහා ා අනයාෙකක

වයයයන් වැදගත් වූ යතොරුනු නීමන ටැේ යන්ෛ භාවිතයට ලාා දීම ුනළින් දු වන්ව යතොරුනු තාක්ෂණයට යයොමු

received research awards at the Annual Research Award Ceremony

of University of Sri Jayewardenepura held on 13th November, 2019

at Golden Rose, Boralesgamuwa. SLLA Congratulate Dr. Nayana

Wijayasundara for her grate achievement.

Late Ms. Srikanthalakshmi Arulanantham, Immediate Past President of SLLA

delivered the keynote speech of the Annual Research Symposium of the

National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), University of

Colombo 2019 held on 30th November 2019 at the NILIS Auditorium. The

symposium theme was 'Information Literacy for Health and Wellbeing'. Ms.

Arulanantham delivered the keynote address on the topic "Medicine for the

Soul: Bibliotherapy and the Library". Ten research papers were presented. NILIS

academic and non-academic staff, students and guests attended the event.

Call for Vijita de Silva Research Award

The Sri Lanka Library Association is pleased to announce the Vijita de

Silva Research Award, the annual research award for the best

completed research in Library and Information Science (LIS) field in

Sri Lanka. Deadline on or before 31st March, 2020. More details

දීම Makerspace වයාපිය ය රිමැමැයායාන මහ න ස්තකතකා ය ළ ස තකපාත ත රිම ම සඳහා ලිකක කටයුළ සිදු කරමින්

පවතී. තම් ළ ළින් සමුන් ළ ස වූ තාක්ෂණික දැනුම භාවිතා කරමින් නව නිපැයුම් නිර්මාණයට අවතකපාව උදාකර දීම

ලිකක අරමුණයි. තවද 2021 වර්ෂය වන විට I වන තේණිතප ස්තකතකා යක් ටවට පමැවර්තනය කර ගැමේතම් අරමුණින්

සඳහා අවශ්ය වන ලිකක අවශ්යතා සස්රා ගැමේතම් කටයුළ ද තම් වන විට ආරම්භ කර ඇය අතර ඉදිමැතප දී

ස්තකතකා ය ළ ළින් ටා තදන තතකවය නවීන තාක්ෂණය ඔතකතතක තවේ ස්ළුල් රිම ම ළ ළින් පාඨක තමතහවර ප්රශ්තකත

මට්ටමින් ටා දීම එම කාර්ය මණ්ඩ ය ඇළ ළු ප්රාතීය ය සභාතඉ ඉදිමැ දැක්මයි.
