The Curtain came down on the2015/2016 season with the Final ofthe Robert Cawley Memorial Cup at

the Ray Mac Sharry Complex. Thegrounds in amazing condition insuredfirst class facilities all that was neededwas a great game to round of theseason. Well the large crowd that cameto sport both sides were treated to aclassic with the Premier ChampionsBallymote Celtic taking on Runners Up StJohn’s FC. Ballymote Celtic started thegame at a high tempo and wererewarded on six minutes when CiaranMc Murray fired them into the lead. Thehitman Mark Irwin made it two nil ontwenty minutes and things were lookinggloom for St John’s. The second halfwas minutes old when Conor Brennangave St John’s a life line with a welltaken goal and it was game. St John’swere now in the driving seat and onfifty-three minutes Malachy Sprattlevelled matters with a sublime effort. This was breath raking stuff with bothsides playing some brilliant football inthe heat of the afternoon sun. ConorBrennan was on a mission with a headerthat nestled in the Ballymote Celtic goalthat gave St John’s the lead for the firsttime in the game. Other teams havethrown in the towel but Championshipsare won with digging deep when thegoing gets tough. Daniel Hargadonproved a saviour for Ballymote Celticwith a brilliant equaliser and broughtthe game into extra time. Both sidescould not be separated even after ahundred and twenty minutes of effortand goals and so to the dreadedpenalty shootout. The glory eventuallyfell to Ballymote Celtic who in winningthe Robert Cawley Memorial Cupcompleted a remarkable League andCup double what an achievement for aclub that has waited since 1978 to lift aleague title now complete the magicaldouble.

ADA provides a range of sports and mouth guards and other retainers withour easy to use self impression kits.

Mouth guards, which are now mandatory for GAA players, can be bought over the counter but these arenot recommended by dentists or us at ADA dental laboratory due to their insufficient protection. Proper

sports guards are custom made to the dental impression taken from the player and guarantee a secure fit.

From the moment he wasborn, horses were in his life, born into a house that was

100 metres from Sligoracecourse, his parents Derekand Bernadette rode out daily, their son followed in suit. One ofhis earliest memories as a childwas his eagerness to get downto a meet at Sligo Racecourse.Having seen a number of horsetrucks go past the house onrace day, he wanted to bethere right then, 3 hours beforethe first race started in case hemissed anything. As he sayshimself “I must have had mymother pestered”

For Sligo’s Richard Pugh -Horses are his life, his passion, hishobby, his industry. Havingfallen for the sport of horseracing and everythingassociated with it at a youngage, one would think that hischildhood dream would be tobecome a top jockey notchingup important victories, whilethere was a period as a jockeyand some great victories, thatactually was never thechildhood dream “I just wantedto be associated with horses, itwasn’t anything in particular, Iloved everything about thewhole environment, I wanted tobe part of the circus” explainsPugh.

Richard Pugh Horses are his life, his passion, his hobby, his industry

Unusual commentary position on yellow truck!

Page 11: Sligo Sport

He began working for theRosses Point based trainer BillyBoyers age 13, Horses wouldhave been ridden out andstables mucked out beforeRichard Pugh made his way toSummerhill collage and thensometimes again straight afterschool before the light wouldfade. It installed an amazingwork ethic in young Pugh that isstill there today.

After few years under thedirection of Boyers, it wasdecided that Pugh should raceas a jockey on the Point toPoint scene. January 1993 washis first race, and at the timePugh was on the SummerhillSoccer, Gaelic and Rugbyteams, had also competed in afew cycling races andtriathlons. – “the buzz as weapproached that first fence

was incredible” is how Pughexplains his first race as ajockey on the Point to Pointscene. It was his 9th ride that hehad his first victory, over thenext few years Pughestablished himself on thescene, got some decent horsesto race, and notched up anumber of victories, but Pughknew he didn’t have the bodyto be a jockey for ever and at

only 19 years of age in May1996 he called it a day, signingoff with a double victory atSligo Race course. But whatwas he to do next? Finishing adegree in Maynooth and thenrunning a distribution business, how was he going to stay withthe circus? “I made a lot of myfriends for life as a teenager onthe Point to Point scene andthen suddenly I had no reasonto be on it when I stoppedriding, it was a shock to thesystem – I began doing racereports, some writing andrecording of horses and resultsfrom the Point to Point sceneand picking up the oddcommentary, it kept me in thecircus!” a year after he had“retired” as a jockey, Pugh wasback at Sligo Point to Pointdoing his first commentary. Now a regular commentator atthe top tracks around thecountry and a regularcontributor to RTE’s HorseRacing coverage, the plan tokeep in with circus hadn’tturned out so bad – but it didn’tstop there.

The Point to Point scene is thebreeding ground for top horseson the main racing tracks andracing scene in both Irelandand the UK and sometimesfurther afield. But there wasn’tmuch specific knowledge on allthe horses that have been onthe Irish Point to Point scene.Richard Pugh’s reports, recording of stats andknowledge were suddenlyabout to fill up what was a“black hole”

A friend of Pugh’s had setupa website for the Irish point topoint scene P2P.ie but didn’treally know where to go with it,he Partnered up with the Sligohorse man and slowly but surelythe site became a source ofknowledge and interest toprospective people looking tofind that “Dream Horse” as wellas to the Point to Pointcommunity, it started to grow,Pugh bought his partner out, sold his distribution business andmade P2P.ie his main business –in the short period of 7-10 yearsPugh and his website haverevolutionised the Irish Point toPoint scene, P2P.ie is the go toonly place for Irish Point toPointing. When P2P.ie startedthere was 455 winners on thetrack graduating from Point toPoint, that has now grown toover 1100 – there is being partof the circus and then there isbeing the Ringmaster! Not to

mention of course it was withinthe Point to Point communitythat Pugh met his wife Jennifer, also born into a house nearBanbridge where horses andracing are part of daily life! Sheis also a multiple winner on thescene!

Pugh’s stock and reputationis high within the industry andwhen it is Tattersalls comeknocking, that was 4 years agowhen he became a non-executive director, givingadvice and counsel to thebiggest firm involved in Horsesales for the UK and Ireland.Last year Tattersalls made himthe Director of Horses in TrainingSales. “It was a relationship thathad developed from the earlydays with P2P.ie, one of ourmain advertisers was a salesfirm Brightwell, Tattersallsbought them over and ourrelationship continued, itsbusy!” explains Pugh

Earlier this year the SligoRaces Committee invited Pughfrom his base in Kildare to betheir special guest for thelaunch of their Race Season. The event MC’d by AustinO’Callaghan had a Q & A atthe end of it and one of thequestions asked to Pugh was –What is the importance oftracks like Sligo Racecourse tothe Horse Racing scene? -Pugh’s answer – “it’s extremelyimportant, if I have made anycontribution to the scene thenit’s a direct result of theinspiration Sligo Racecoursehad on me as a child”

A Contribution???? – Letsrecap3 years as a jockey withnumerous victories, signing offin Sligo at Age 19Fills the black hole of data thatexisted in Point to Pointing andrevolutionises the scene totally, bringing new interest andbuyers to the Irish market.Heads up the Sales of theleading Sales firm in the UK andIreland. This Sligo native turns 40 inOctober, it’s what he is going todo in the next 20 years that is ofmuch interest. The last word we will leave withRichard Pugh – “If I’ve made agood contribution and peoplesee that, then that’s good, Ihad no major dreams, yes Icould have maybe raced moreand got more winners, but I justwanted to be involved, I lovehorses, I love the scene, I’mgrateful to be part of it.”

SLIGO SPORT JUNE, 201612

Tuesday 8th March 2016 wasthe registration night for thelatest of our Club’s very

popular Bike-for-Life (BFL)beginner/re-starter cyclingcourses, and it was veryencouraging to see well in excessof 30 interested applicantsturning up. However, from ourexperience of delivering BFLcourses over the past two years, for most effective course delivery, and for on-the-bike individualcoaching and guidance by twoBFL group leaders, we had tokeep the maximum number ofparticipants to the first 15 toregister, as advertised. This wasimportant also from a safetyperspective, where a spread of15 riders on open roads, guidedby two qualified CI coaches, isreally an advisable maximum.

On registration, all of our BFLparticipants received a welcomepack containing a useful CyclingSafety Kit from the Road SafetyAuthority (RSA), an importantCycle Safety leaflet from TheSligo Cycling Campaign and aCycling Ireland (CI) Bike-for-Life

Log Book/Cycling Guide andNeck Buff. On of evening ofregistration, participants wererequested to carefully read theCycle Safety Leaflet in advanceof their first coaching session, andto take note of the excellentillustrative drawings which giveclear information of therecommended bike position onthe road in various situations(right turns, roundabouts, etc.).

A number of participantsindicated that they had someprevious cycling experience, butmost had no regular cyclingactivity in recent years orexperience of any real distancecycling. Some openly admittedtheir nervousness of open roadcycling and their wish to conquerthat fear. We acknowledgedeverybody’s goals and concerns, and committed to addressing allover the next 7 weeks. To thedisbelief of many, eachparticipant was informed thatthe coaches’ aim for the groupover the following weeks was tohave everybody sufficientlytrained and bike-fit, confident on

the road, and ready to be ableto successfully complete andenjoy the forthcoming 60Km AnPost Yeats Tour of Sligo event onSunday 1st May. We vividlydescribed the great buzz that weboth got on completing our first60km event, and encouraged allto realistically consider giving it ago !

Our structured coachingprogram is directly based onCycling Ireland’s BFL format, withprogressive modules of 2.5-3hours per session delivered withina 7 week timeframe. For thislatest BFL course, we wanted todeliver something different, hence the overall goal ofparticipation in the 60Km An PostTour. All of our participants, 3 menand 12 women, ranging in agefrom 24 to 65, had, in someinstances, not cycled in over 20years, and all were interested inlearning simple and precise bikehandling skills, training techniquesand generally developing theircycling confidence. Sunday 13thMarch was a lovely dry day forcycling. All of our 15 eager

participants turned up at theSligo IT Knocknarea Arena fortheir introduction to the joys ofleisure cycling, with their twobike-mad coaches already thereand rearing to go. The Sligo ITCampus being also the regular‘HQ’ for our well attendedSunday Club spins, our BFLGroup’s introduction to the sightof a large number of InnisfreeWheelers cyclists, young and not-so-young, and clad in all forms oftight and dodgy looking lycraattire, was very amusing – what alovely sight to behold !

As always in our first BFLmodule, before taking to theroad at all, our session coveredbike assessment (the essentialsafety ‘M-Check’) withparticipants swapping andchecking each other’s bikes, cycling assessment, cyclingcompetency, talks anddemonstrations on basic bikemaintenance, how to quicklyremove wheels, recommendedcycling clothing, proper andsecure helmet fitting, the Rules ofthe Road, road manners andbike etiquette……the ‘dos anddon’ts’ of all of that. We thenmoved the Group to a securecar park at the Sligo IT for cyclingskills demonstration and 2 X 2cycling practice that includedsafe double-braking, gearchanging and techniques (‘big-ring’, ‘small-ring’), essential handsignals for safety at all times, 2-abreast riding, balancing whiledrinking and replacing a bottleon the move, the absolutenecessity for loud safety calls(‘hole’, ‘single-file’, ‘car up’ etc.),followed by an initial open roadspin of 4Km, where every skill andtechnique just learned waspracticed.

On the conclusion of our firstsession, the group was given“cycling homework” for thefollowing week – to commit totogging out, hail rain or shine, and completing 2 X 5km spins intheir own time. We suggestedTuesday and Thursday eveningsso that when participants

returned for our second BFLsession, they could complete a20km open road spin with ease.As the weeks progressed, thehomework was for longer, butvery achievable spins, addingsome hill work for furtherdevelopment. This progressivetraining was continued by thecoaches, week on week, through the rest of the BFLsessions, and the route segmentswe used were always segmentsof the An post 60km circuit. Weare very proud of theaccomplishments of our 15 BFLparticipants. Not having beenregular cyclists at all just sevenweeks earlier, an amazing 11 ofour group completed the 60KmAn Post Tour of Sligo, and manyhave since become full Clubmembers and will take theircycling to further heights! Wewelcome our groups’ feedback, and use it to improve our BFLcourse delivery. Each participantwas issued with a feedback formto complete and we haveincluded some feedback below.“I found it all fantastic – great forconfidence building”.

“Teachers were very good –informative, made everythingeasy to understand” “Very wellpresented and enjoyable”

“The lads were excellent atexplaining the use of gears andother parts of the bicycle, puncture repair etc”

“The course was very welldelivered. The members haveimproved their confidence, techniques and fitness. Thank youPaul and Martin for this amazingcourse”

“Excellent and really worthdoing. Would recommend to allstarting out”

Finally, we would like, inparticular, to thank Lawrencefrom Cycling Ireland, our ownInnisfree Wheelers Cycling ClubSligo, and the Road SafetyAuthority, Ballina, for all of thesupport we have received inpreparing for, and hosting ourBike-for-Life courses to date.

Colaiste Iascaigh winSligo/Leitrim 1st/2nd YrCompetitionCongratulations to Colaiste Iascaigh boy’s footballteam on winning the Sligo/Leitrim 1st and 2nd yearcompetition. The boys won a hard fought battleagainst Ballinamore Community School in SligoG.A.A. centre of excellence, Scarden last Mondayby a scoreline of  5-6 to 2-11. A fantastic individualgoal by Eoin Gordan in the dying minutes provedthe difference between the teams in a tightlycontested match. Colaiste Iascaigh started well witha goal and two points in the early minutes but aresilient Ballinamore fought back with someexcellent long distance points and at the intervalColaiste Iascaigh led by  just 3 points. ColaisteIascaigh got a dream start to the second half withan early goal but again Ballinamore fought theirway back into game and would have taken thelead with ten minutes remaining only for anoutstanding block by Shane Molloy to a shot thatwas heading for the back of the net. ColaisteIascaigh grabbed the decisive goal two minutesfrom the end to cap off a great win and end theyear on a high note.

In a world where it seemseverything has a daydedicated to it ( from

International Kiss a Ginger Dayto World Picnic Day) it’ssurprising that Global WellnessDay, a day dedicated toencouraging people to live theirbest and healthiest life, wasonly founded in 2012. Starting inTurkey, the initiative has takenoff worldwide, and is nowrepresented by passionateambassadors from more than73 countries planet-wide. Wetalked to Kira Walton, Sligo’s(and the Republic of Ireland’s)very own Global Wellness DayAmbassador and founder ofVoya, to find out exactly whatSaturdday 11th June holds instore.

What Is Wellness? As Kira says, “Wellness is a lot ofthings. It’s a state of mind, away of life, a feeling, as well asincorporating exercise, diet andmental health”. The worldhealth organisation defineswellness as “A state ofcomplete physical, mental, andsocial well-being and notmerely the absence of diseaseor infirmity”, all of which pointsto the idea that wellness is

about making choices thatlead to a healthy and fulfillinglife. There are seven steps in theGlobal Wellness Day Manifesto, which advocates suggestincorporating into one’s lifestyleslowly. Kira points out that“We’re all busy, we’re allworking hard, and you can’texpect someone to changetheir whole way of lifeovernight... Or even just for oneday”. The idea of the manifesto, which includes such simpleluxuries as an early night andplenty of hydrating water, andthe aim of the day itself, is toinspire and encourageindividuals to take such steps intheir own everyday existence. Afamily dinner, organic food anda nice long walk are also stepsin the manifesto, as well as theless obvious options of avoidingplastic bottles and doing agood deed.

What’s On Offer?Global Wellness Day is anentirely not-for-profit day, run byvolunteers like Kira and herteam, Jacqueline Mellet andGretta Salter. Therefore all of theevents available on Saturday11th June at Sligo EnterpriseCentre and the beautiful

surrounds of Strandhill villageand beach, are absolutelyFREE. At 9am the day kicks offwith a mindful meditation ledby well-known eco-retreat guruNoeleen Tyrrell. Following this,John Graham, PersonalChange Coach, will give a talkon how to maximise sleep andswitch off one’s mind at nighttime, to aid with energy levelsand productivity. Yoga next, with founder of Yoga Meon,Anne-Marie O’Halloran, in asession that will suit allcapabilities. Gently Ramping upthe exercise side of things, therewill be a guided walk across thestunning Strandhill sand dunes, after which Sligo’s mostboisterous and brilliant danceteacher, Sarah Middleton willbe hosting a fun and energetic‘Dance Wellness’ workshop. And if you weren’t poopedafter all that, there’s also arebounding class (trampoliningfor grown-ups) and a kidsactivity session too. All sessionsare free and open to thepublic, and can be attendedall in a row or sporadically witha little coffee break in betweenthe ones that appeal.Registration is 15 minutes beforeeach event, but booking in

advance is advisable, asdemand is bound to be high forsuch a vibrant day out.

Wellness Around The WorldWhile Sligo is enjoying all theactivities on offer on what willhopefully be a sunny Saturdayafternoon in Strandhill, Ireland, thousands around the world willbe doing the very same. Thefounder of Global Wellness Day,Belgin Aksoy, herself a cancersurvivor and passionateadvocate of living well, isdetermined that this specialday dedicated to goodphysical and mental health isavailable to everyone, nomatter where they live or whattheir financial or social situation. As she says;“Living well is the simplenecessity for every humanbeing on the planet. Toovercome global problemssuch as depression and lead ahealthier and happier life, weneed an inspiring beginning. The name of that beginning isGlobal Wellness Day”.

Wellness in SligoWhile wellness should be, andcan be, a priority for everyonearound the world, there is one

thing that Kira acknowledges -we are particularly blessed tolive in a place like Sligo. “Lookat all we have on offer, from ourbeautiful landscape to all thewatersports and facilities closeat hand, it really is hard not towant to live well in such aperfect setting!”Indeed, while city dwellers haveto seek out a small patch ofgreen to get close to nature ontheir run or walk, we have anabundance right on ourdoorstep. Activity providers likethe numerous surf schools alongthe coast, SUP, kayaking, horseriding, golf, tennis andmountainbiking, as well as moreunusual feel-good options likeflying lessons and danceclasses, an abundance of livemusic, great (and healthy!)food and drink options andplenty of entertainment on offermake Sligo one of the mostinspiring places to be healthyon the planet. So what are you waiting for?Take a few leaves out of Kiraand co’s book today and try afew steps of the manifesto. Bythe time Global Wellness Daycomes around you couldalready be feeling very wellindeed.

One day canchange your life

One of my earliest &strongestmemories of sport

was when I was 12 &playing in one of my firstjunior medals. I alreadyhad a handicap which Ithink at the time wasaround 22, I wasenthusiastic, I could hitgood shots but consistentscoring wasn’t that great.

Anyway on this medal after my first 2balls had been lost in the trees, I’dhacked myself up onto the green andtaken a couple of putts for an 11. Mypal who was marking my score sidled up& whispered “Don’t worry I’ll put youdown for a 7” and gave me a little wink.I suppose why I remember this is myoverwhelming thought of ‘But you can’tjust do that!’ then my second thought of‘Who else is doing this if he’s doing it?’(even if it was seem as a kind gesture toa chum.) It culminated in a thought of‘What’s the point in competing if noneof this is being played to the rules, mightas well not bother counting’.

It’s a really vivid memory and there’s alot of emotion attached to it (non if itthat pleasant). Cheating in sport isnever out of the news these days.Whether it’s using banned drugs, addinga motor to your mountain bike or realityshow stars siblings cutting under thebarriers at the London Marathon to run20k in 48mins! Obviously it’s a tinypercentage who do it, but bad newssells. So why bother competing if youwant to compete fairly?

I’ve read articles that talk aboutintrinsic and extrinsic motivation.Extrinsic motivation would be someonewho is motivated by stuff ‘outside’ ofthem i.e. money, prizes, acclaim fromothers, status, praise etc. Intrinsicmotivation comes from ‘inside you’authentic desire to be the best you can,to play for love, enjoyment etc.

I’ve read how extrinsically motivatedpeople would be more likely to cheat.Intrinsically motivated people less sobecause they are playing to be theirbest and cheating would go againstthat.

Personally speaking it’s not the label ofwhat your motivation is that’s theproblem. I do think when we labelourselves we are almost giving ourselvespermission to behave in a certain way“it’s the way I am”. Extrinsic motivation islearned, it’s not who you are, it’s whatyour understanding & behaviours havebeen up till now. It’s the values & beliefs(thoughts) that have been lived by togive those results. Intrinsic motivation

isn’t learned it’s exactly what it says onthe tin. intrinsic & has always beenthere, its built in. What I do think isthere’s a misunderstanding from thosewho cheat of how our experience of lifeworks.

Our whole experience of sport is mindmade. The rules are man made andadapted. Drugs that were legal a fewmonths ago are no longer legal, puttersthat met standards no longer conform, offside rules that seem to changeannually (and still mystify). Someone firstthinks up what’s acceptable then putsthe thought into practice. So it’s ourthoughts that make up the parametersof what is right and wrong.

What’s also mind made is ourexperience. Whether we win, lose, draw, play great or play terrible. Theexperience we have of that is mindmade. Our thoughts create ourexperience at that time.

Someone could win & be nonplussedanother could be over the moon. It’stheir thinking in the moment that createstheir own personal experience never thesituation.

So for someone who feels that theirhappiness or satisfaction comes from theexperience of winning, prizes, acclaimfrom others etc. You can see whycorners are cut.

To add to that the more we thinksomething is OK the more we will findevidence to justify it. To cheat is anaction, no more no less. An action thatwhen the person does it, they havedecided it’s the right course of action tofollow. It’s obviously an action thatmakes a mockery of playing the game.It doesn’t mean it IS the right course ofaction just the one that, through theirthinking, was right at the time.

Once carried out their version of it is amemory, or a thought. Our thinking isour imagination and our imaginationcan create any version of the past itlikes. My memory of being twelve on thegolf course is that I signed for a 11, that’sthe memory I’d like to have and it’s theone I’ve continually thought.

As sad, frustrated, let down & angry, hearing about cheats makes us. As longas there’s a misunderstanding of wheretheir experience comes from they willalways be looking for shortcuts breakingthe rules. The only saving grace is that ifthey feel their feeling comes fromoutside them then they will always belooking and never be fully at peace.

‘This time last year I was chasingmy tail,’ laments Pat Lam as hesits in a spacious gym at TheSportsground with Mils Muliainafive metres away. ‘It was only meand Dan McFarland, which isridiculous at this level.’ It is not thefirst time I have heard aConnacht coach complain, buthearing griping Galwegian linenaired in the presence of a one-hundred-times capped All Blackslegend is a new experience.Times are changing out west, butmany still wish the pendulumcould pick up the pace.

Lam, a New Zealander whoappeared in two World Cups withSamoa, arrived in Galway in 2013with lofty ambitions for theprovince. He spoke withinfectious enthusiasm upontouchdown, but, by the end ofOctober (and a 16–13 loss toLeinster), the enormity of his taskwas beginning to dawn.Connacht achieved theirgreatest-ever rugby result twomonths later, by stunning four-times European Cup championsToulouse at Stade Ernest-Wallon,their imposing home ground. Itwas the high-water-mark of aseason that saw them finish tenthin the league and miss out on the

new Champions Cup by aconsiderable distance.

Undeterred from his long-termproject, Lam continued to utilisehis Super Rugby contacts. TomMcCartney and Bundee Aki weresigned up for the new season, along with fullback Muliaina. Thecaptures took the Kiwi playingcontingent into double figuresand added a genuine air ofexcitement around the province.‘I came here purely on the visionand the basis of the cause,’ saysLam. ‘When I talked to these guysI said, “Listen, this isn’t aboutplaying for just another club andwe’ll have the craic.”

‘This,’ Lam continues, and hepats a meaty left hand above hisheart, ‘is Connacht. This is wherethey have come from, this iswhere they are and this is wherethey aspire to go. This is whatwe’re going to do, and this iswhat I’d like you guys to do aspart of it. That’s why I came here.If [the board] had said to me,“Oh, become coach ofConnacht, win some games andenjoy life in the west of Ireland,”I’d have said, “No thanks.” Theysaid, “This is where we’re at andthis is where we’re going ...”Woah, really gets you going.

That’s why you play the game –to have that cause.

‘When I first arrived,’ Lamrecalls, ‘I didn’t expect we’dhave no chief executive for along period of time; I didn’texpect it’d just be me and Danfor a long time. I didn’t expect alot of that. What I did do is spenda lot of time with the people onthe board and the key people inthe IRFU, because there’s a PlanIreland document. I read thatstrategic plan. The biggest thingfor me is I love this game andwant to see it grow. What I readand understood from thatdocument is that the game willonly grow if the Irish team isstrong. We’ve got our goals, but itis not about the provinces. We’vegot a part to play in growing thegame in Ireland. If we canprovide another avenue foryoung, Irish players to comethrough and play for the nationalside – because that funds thegame and pays the bills – great.A kid in Castlebar or Clifden is notinterested in rugby becauseLeinster, Munster or Toulon win theEuropean Cup. He gets interestedin the game because of the SixNations or Ireland winning theWorld Cup.’

Lam won the Heineken Cup asa player with Northampton in2000, when they beat Munster atTwickenham. Sitting in Galway, fourteen years on, Lam still usestop teams as a reference pointwhen referring to his young squadof players: ‘Other teams canreplace that international withthat international. Look at Toulon. If you look at our squad last year. Iasked a few people, even on the[Connacht] board, to name theirbest fifteen. They did, and then Ithrew down facts. I said “Do youknow that not once in twenty-eight games did that fifteen playtogether?” It didn’t happenonce. That’s not a problem forteams like Leinster. If JamieHeaslip’s not

playing, Jordi Murphy plays. IfSean O’Brien is missing, ShaneJennings plays. We get WillieFaloon injured, and get JakeHeenan, who is playing his firstyear of rugby at this level, in. Hegets injured, and we bring in ayoung academy boy, anineteen-year-old. See thedifference?’

Before I can nod in agreement,Lam reaches out and grabs myshoul- der. ‘People might see thatand say, “That’s terrible,” but I

look at it as a total positive. It’s achance to give a young guy theexposure. He’s in the academy, but he has played seven [senior]games. People from the outsidemay look at it and ask,“What’sgoing on?” but I look at it as thisyoung kid from Ireland has nowachieved that, and will get betterand better.’

What stands out from my chatwith Lam is the fact that therewere open lines ofcommunication with the IRFU,and that money was finallyfunnelling its way out west. In PaulBunce, Connacht had finallyjoined the other three Irishprovinces in having a dedicatedhead of fitness. Aki, signed fromWaikato Chiefs, and a two-timeSuper Rugby champion, wouldhave easily slotted into theLeinster and Munster midfields, while if ever there was amarquee signing to lace up andrun out onto Thomond Park, itwould have been Mils Muliaina –former teammate and surfingbuddy of Doug Howlett. Mils, however, was in Galway, andsettling into west-coast life. It allseemed miles away from theunion’s previous dealings with thewestern province.

Lam is contracted until June2018, and can see genuineprogress. For the first time sinceWarren Gatland left in 1998,however, Connacht are headingin the right direction.

the treatment.

How does the therapy work?Your body is made up of energy and if this energy system

allow the body to heal.

What is the role of the Plexus therapist? The first step in the bodies healing process is to get your energy
