South Livingston Elementary hosted a county-wide spelling bee recently, welcoming students from North Livingston Elementary School, Livingston County Mid-dle School, and the grade winners at SLES. SLES Assistant Principal Ms. Becky and NLES Principal Mr. Mott served as judges, and former SLES Principal Mrs. Henson held the role of pronouncer during the spelling bee. Front left to right: First-place winner Rainey Gibbs (LCMS), Alyssa Yaw (NLES), second place, and third-place winner Wyatt Jaco (SLES) pose after the spelling bee.

Mrs. Shelley named Staff of the Month

South Livingston Elementary School re-cently an-nounced its November Staff Member of the Month. Attendance Secretary Mrs. Shelley received the honor, thanks, in part, to her Mustang pride and the difference she makes in the lives of the students and faculty at SLES. Mrs. Shelley is a Livingston County Schools alumnus, having attended both Ledbetter and Smithland elementary schools. She is a graduate of Livingston Central High School. For the past 14 years, Mrs. Shelley has been part of the staff of the Livingston School District. She considers herself lucky to be able to work at SLES. “It is a pleasure be-ing able to help the parents, students, and staff of SLES,” she said. Mrs. Shelley has two daughters, Haley and Madie, and is married to LCHS Principal Scott Gray.

SLES has New Year’s Resolution by Gracie Grimm

Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? If not, now is the time! What is a New Year’s resolution? A New Year’s Resolution is a goal that you plan to accomplish over the new year. Several SLES staff members are planning to keep their own resolutions. Mrs. Penny, Mrs. Stephenson, and Mrs. Tina all shared their resolutions. Mrs. Penny said she wants “to get and eat healthier.” Mrs. Stephenson pledged “to be more organized and to laugh more.” Mrs. Tina’s resolution “to see my dad more.”

If you want to share your resolution with us, write it down, and put it in The

South Sun mailbox in the library. You could be featured in the next edition!

MRA offers homework help by Jada Cosby

Do you ever need home-work help? Do you ask your parents, but they can’t help you? Well, MRA

has staff who can help you in every sub-ject. MRA is Monday through Thursday 2:50PM to 6:00PM. It doesn’t cost a lot of money, and your grades on your re-port card could look better.

SLES students enjoy limo ride Seven South Livingston Elementary School students were rewarded for their hard work during the school-wide Paragon fundraiser. Fundraiser top sellers (pictured left to right) August Taylor, Chloe Estes, Maggie Gilbert, Morgan Smith, Emersyn Ramage, Dalton Hall, and Bryce Edging were picked up at school by a limousine and treated to lunch and some fun and games at Mr. Gatti’s.

Holiday season ap-proaches

by Colt Winchester

Christmas

Christmas is a holi-day set aside to celebrate Christ being born on Decem-ber 25. Santa Claus gives kids who are good gifts and the ones that are bad get coal. The reason you get presents on Christmas is be-cause when the disciples came to see Jesus, they brought gifts for Him, so we now get presents on Christ-mas.

Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States but also cele-brated in western Africa. The celebration honors Afri-can heritage in African-American culture, and is ob-served from December 26.to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving. It is ideological, with seven core principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, co-operative economics, pur-pose, creativity, and faith. It was created by Maulana Karenga, and was first cele-brated in 1966–67.

All about pigs by Carsyn Jones

The words “pig,” “hog,” and “swine” are all different terms without consideration of gender, size, or breed. A male pig is called a “boar.” A female pig is called “gilt” if she hasn't had piglets yet and a “sow” if she has. Pigs are very smart and learn swiftly. Pigs can learn things faster than any dog. Pigs are very friendly animals. They form special and very close bonds with each other and other types of animals. Pigs enjoy close contact and will lie close together when sleeping. Pigs use their grunts to talk or com-municate with each other. A momma pig can give birth to a litter containing 7 to 12 baby pigs, about twice a year. A baby pig, or piglet, weighs just over three pounds at birth and will double its weight in just one week. Weaning occurs at three months of age, but young piglets continue to live with their mothers. Two or more mother pigs usually join to-gether in a super big extended family. Pigs are very clean animals. They keep their personal space somewhere far from their owner or cage. Even baby pigs only a few hours old will leave the bed to give themselves relief.

SLES participates in CARDIAC Program Just recently Livingston County’s fourth grade students were screened for car-diovascular disease risk factors. This is part of the CARDIAC (Coronary Risk Detection in All Children) Project, a program sponsored by South Livingston Elementary School, Purchase Area Health Educa-tion Center, Livingston County Hospital, and Family First in an attempt to decrease the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and stroke. The screening included a

health history questionnaire, meas-urement of each student’s height, weight, and blood pressure, as well a check for the marker, Acanthosis Nigricans, which indicates type 2 diabetes. The goal of CARDIAC is to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease and promote wellness throughout the county. In the words of Stephanie Henson, who coordinates the program: “We want to work towards teaching our students and staff to lead a healthy lifestyle.
