12 weeks ago 18 contestants entered the Parklands Life
Hospital Slender Wonder weight loss challenge in
conjunction with East Rand Stereo & Breezology.
Doctor Sharon Lion-Cachet was the representing
Slender Wonder doctor and she shared her experience
below.
It was my great privilege to be involved in the 2015 Life
Springs Parkland Clinic Slender Wonder Challenge run
in combination with 93.9 FM East Rand Stereo and
Breezology. The challenge was taken on by 18 hospital
staff members and was launched on 29th of January at
Parkland Clinic. A day of interviews had been conducted
before the launch to screen the potential participants. 18
participants were selected. At the launch a full
presentation of the Slender Wonder Programme was
given by myself outlining the different phases of the
programme. Henry Bruinette and Angeline Morakoane
as well as Hantie Jansen Van Vuuren from 93.9 FM East
Rand Stereo attended the launch. Henry kept the
audience smiling with his sense of humour. Riaan
Jacobs MD of Slender Wonder welcomed the
participants and encouraged them with humour and
style. Dawid Boshoff (loss 83kg and still losing) and
Nikki Van Wyk (loss 38kg) shared their personal stories
and were a great source of inspiration for the new group.
Yolandi van Wyk did an amazing job managing the
marketing and social media aspects of the challenge.
Each participant had to participate in daily posts on the
Facebook page dedicated to the challenge, as well as
support each other on the Parkland's Challenge
Whatsapp group. This gave them the opportunity to
share the journey- good and hard days- as well as ask
questions about the programme. They shared ideas,
recipes and tips and it was a great source of support.
Participants were weighed every 14 days at the hospital
and given their boosters and new products at each of
these weigh ins for the duration of the 3 month
challenge. The excitement on the hospital was tangible
on these Wednesday mornings! The competition was
tight and the challenge was on!!
The Breakfast show with Henry and Angeline kept the
public updated and there were many interviews with
doctors, previous successful patients as well as stories
of inspiration. The final weigh in was very close and we
were able to see the participants fading away every 2
weeks!
Our final prize giving was held at Life Springs Parkland
Clinic on May 6th 2015 and the results were as follows-
1st Magdalena Davids 18.5kg
2nd Jacques Van Heerden 18.0kg
3rd Janine Van der Merwe 15.8kg
4th Dr Brenda Watson 14.2kg
5th Zanette Van Heerden 13.5kg

Savoury Rice
I took cauliflower, chopped it up in the food processor,
placed it in a big sieve and placed it over boiling water,
steaming it until done. In the meantime I chopped up some
tomato, onion and baby marrow very finely (for some colour)
and fried it in a pan sprayed with spray & cook . I then mixed
the cauliflower with the veggies and added a little bit of the
marinade just for a bit of extra flavour. I grilled the prawns in
the airfryer for two and a half minutes on 200˚ and voila!
"Slender Wonder Grilled Prawns on a bed of Savoury Rice.

Sarah PowellTestimonial
Sarah Powell decided enough was enough at the
beginning of September 2014. She had, had enough of the
fat jokes, the ridicule, the embarrassment of her clothes not
fitting her the way they should and enough of her internal
battle with food.
Sarah shares her Slender Wonder story with us.
If you know me ... you know I love food. My husband says I
am the reason he gets fat, “coz I cook soooo good!” I was
always in the kitchen whipping up something yummy
experimenting with different flavours and pretending to be
a chef. I loved to cook soul nurturing food but at the same
time destroying my body with the very thing that made me
“happy” or so I thought – I wouldn't say I was a comfort /
stress eater... I just LOVE food.
My turning point was when that song from Meghan Trainor
came out - “All about that bass” – I adopted this as “my
anthem” “my ode to “chubby girls” I started to reside to the
fact that I will always be fat and I started to convince myself
that, it was ok to be this way and to look like this. I made
excuses not to go to the gym and pushed the blame
everywhere else but on to myself... how sad, I had to blame
others for my own faults...tut tut tut!
I found myself eating pies, sweets and chocolates during
the day (not telling hubby) or stopping at McDonalds for
burgers and telling myself that its ok, I am on the road, I am
a rep, this is what reps do and then going home in the
evening and making a carbo-loaded, oil filled dinner for us
and then the worst of all, sharing a pudding half/half with
hubby after dinner. Now I am not talking about half a
chocolate or half an ice cream, no, no, I mean the puddings
at Woolies the ones that serve 4, which now only served 2.
I must say, I was petrified to start the Slender Wonder
journey, and let me tell you something, I was a bear with a
sore tooth at the end of detox – but the moment I started
Simeon B...man oh man... there was no stopping me the
kilos were melting off they were moving faster than I could
ever imagine. I had to lose about 30 kilograms. I have also
been hitting the shops hard and fast to keep my clothes size
up with the loss. My husband told me that I was the best
looking homeless person he had seen in a long time. I took
the hint and went to the shops – he is rather cute though, he
sings me this song every day ”skinny-maliknki-dinkie-dink,
skinny –malin-kie-doo....I love you!”
He has been so supportive though out my journey and I
owe most of this to him he has really been stead fast and
strong for me.
Every two weeks I religiously meet with Dr Gerda Sholtz
and my progress has been very well received by her. She is
so understanding and motivating and such a wonderful
person inside and out.
March 2015 we went on a week's holiday to Thailand it was
the first time in years I have been brave enough to wear a
costume on the beach and not cover myself as much as
possible!!! Although the food in Thailand is “not in the
book!”I tried my best to stay on track. I am back now and
motivated as ever to keep this beach body of mine.
I have bought both recipe books and love the amazing
ideas – I use them every night.

We offer the PyruVite supplement as part of the Slender
Wonder Weight Loss Programme. Pyruvate and
Wonderzyme form the base of the PyruVite supplement and
have been proven to speed up weight loss.
What is Pyruvate?
It is a substance that naturally occurs in the human body and
forms the basis of the Kreb Cycle. The Kreb Cycle refers to the
process of glycogen conversion to energy. In the simplest
form it refers to the way the body burns starch and sugar.
Through the addition of Pyruvate to the body, the cellular
respiration process is improved and this helps to promote fat
absorption and thus to reduce the amount of fat deposited.
Explained in another way - it is the molecule that’s left after the
glycose has been broken down in the cell. This is then further
broken down to enter the aerobic respiration system or it can
be changed through a process of fermentation into lactic acid.
It is classified as a three-carbon Ketone or Keto Acid, which is
the end-result of glycolysis.
Glycolysis is nothing other than the breakdown of sugar. Once
at this stage it can be changed to lactase or acetyl CoA. In the
simplest possible explanation – Pyruvate is created through
the sugar metabolism process.
The benefits of adding our PyruVite to your daily supplements
if you want to lose weight are numerous including the
reduction of mood and energy swings and enhancing the level
of oxygen that the cells get. It also helps to reduce food
cravings. With more oxygen delivered to the cells, the body
performs better and you experience clarity of mind.
Our supplement also contains Vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6 and
B12. The B vitamins are known for their ability to relieve stress
and anxiety, treat depression, improve memory, reduce the
symptoms of PMS and reduce heart disease risks. In
addition, some of the Vitamin B’s help to burn fat while also
improving energy levels and repairing damaged DNA.
Slender Wonder Weight Loss Programme
Essential supplements such as PyruVite containing Pyruvate
and B vitamins form part of the Slender Wonder Weight Loss
Programme. This is to ensure that your body gets the required
nutritional support during the process and to aid in fat burning,
hunger craving management and balancing of the nutritional
profile of the body. As part of this medically approved
programme, only available from accredited doctors
throughout the country, we prescribe a healthy GI eating and
exercise plan as well as a series of Leptin injections.
The Leptin injections are needed to help restore the Leptin
level in the body. When the level is too low, the body keeps on
storing fat and tells the brain that it is hungry. By restoring the
balance, we help you to see drastic weight loss results. The
programme is prescribed by over 200 doctors and is
exceptionally safe. We provide you with ongoing emotional,
motivational and informational support throughout the
process ensuring that you will experience long-term results,
better health and regain control over your weight
management.
View our full product list and more information about the
programme or use the Doctor locator to find a doctor near you
that offers the programme.

burner and is responsible for the transport of fats into the
cells to be used for energy in the body. Therefore it
supports the fat burning process and increase your
energy levels.
As an essential amino acid, L-Arginine that occur in

Beat the
winter bluesWinter isn't most people's favourite season and even
more so when you are trying to lose weight. Days
become shorter, nights longer and the cold has you
wanting to nibble on anything your fingers can find to
“comfort” your cold self. You crave warm foods,
desserts & hot chocolates and you feel it comforts you
when eating or drinking these foods.
Comfort eating in winter leads to uncomfortable
summers and this is why we would like to remind you
“summer bodies are made in winter”. If you eat clean
during the 3 winter months the “you” in Spring will be
ever so grateful that the winter “you” pushed through
saying no to comfort food.
So what do you do when the nasty cravings for comfort
food knocks on your stomach?
We have comprised a few Slender Wonder tips for
you:
1) Hot chocolate craving: heat your Slender Wonder
Protein Plus shake up in the morning and you have
a similar hot chocolate effect.
2) Warm foods: We have several recipes in the
Slender Wonder recipe books that will ease your
“comfort food” craving.
3) It has been shown that when you crave something
that by brushing your teeth the craving will settle.
4) Warm your apple in the microwave, add cinnamon
& sweetener for a pudding effect.
5) Get moving: Try going for a walk, yoga or Pilates.
This will not only benefit your health but also
improve your weight loss and speed up your
metabolism.
6) Exercise your mind: winter is the perfect time to
learn something new. Start a new course,
challenge yourself with crossword puzzles or
Sudoku and catch up on some reading.
7) Try a new hobby, knitting, cycling on the weekends,
painting, horse riding, and learn how to play an
instrument or repurpose old furniture.
8) Most importantly; keep busy to keep your mind off
of food.
9) Always make sure you are well hydrated, drink 2 – 3
liters of water per day. Often dehydration can set off
cravings too.
10) Get enough sleep as sometime fatigue can also
cause you to have cravings.
Reward yourself at the end of winter with a new outfit to
go with your new body that is ready for summer.
Beat the winter blues and prove to yourself that you can
maximize your weight loss efforts during winter too.

Doctor Hanlie Lottering is a general practitioner in
Garsfontein, Pretoria east. She completed her studies
in 2005 and started her own practice in March 2013.
Everyone at her practice still believes in the importance
of family values and the personal relationship between
them and their patients which makes us one big happy
family!
Doctor Lottering wrote:
"I like paediatrics, but all my other patients are equally
important to me. I also assist in medical studies done at
a clinical research facility.
I love nature and photography. I love being active and in
my spare time I join my family and friends for an off-road
trail run in nature, enjoying the beauty of God's creation.
Many people are suffering from obesity and it is my life's
calling to help them to lead a healthier life. After looking
at some solutions to this, I started with Slender Wonder
in February 2014. Since then I treated approximately
390 patients and the results have been overwhelming.
While working with the Slender Wonder program I found
it to be an effective and healthy way to lose weight and
the biggest upside to this is the positive impact on
peoples lives. With Slender Wonder I realised that
healthy people are happy people and my patient's
success stories are a testimonial thereof.
My advice to new Slender Wonder patients is to follow
the programme meticulously, be positive about the
outcome and enjoy this life changing journey! A journey
that they will look back on with pride and self-
satisfaction!
Vital to my Client's success stories is the frequent
reminder of following the programme throughout and
the importance on how to maintain their weight when
finishing the programme.
In my opinion Slender Wonder is not just a diet, it is a life
changing investment in someone's future health."
Dr Lottering has had many Slender Wonder success
stories in her practice and she has shared three of her
patient's stories with us below.
M Van Rooyen is a 29year old female. She has diabetes
and uses insulin on a daily basis. She started on slender
wonder in March 2014 with a weight of 140kg. since she
started on the programme she reduced the amount of
daily insulin, and her sugars are much better controlled.
She is currently at a weight of 93 kg and is still following
the programme. She says that the programme changed
her life and she loves to eat healthy. It is such a privalage
to be part of her journey!!
Mrs K Bezuidenhout is a 58 year old female patient.
She started slender wonder in April 2014. She weighed
in at 91,4kg. She stabilized at a weight of 60.7kg in
September 2014. She had a total loss of 30,7kg and a
total of 81.5cm. She is still maintaining her weight and
even lost another 5kg since then. She is looking younger
and more radiant than the first time we met her.
Mr C Maharaj is a 40year old male patient. We started
his journey in august 2014 with a weight of 100.6kg. he
is a gout sufferer and is also taking cholesterol
treatment. After finishing his stabilisation in april 2015
he ended with a weight of 78.5kg. Since then he has
been doing well and maintained his weight. His blood
pressure stabilised without medication and he did not
suffer from a gout event since the start of the
programme.
We would like to congratulate Dr Lottering with her
Slender Wonder successes thus far and may her
practice grow from strength to strength.
Doctor Hanlie Lottering You can't 'outrun'
obesityLONDON — A team of British cardiologists have said it's
time to "bust the myth" that regular exercise tackles
obesity.
The strongly-worded editorial in the British Journal of
Sports Medicine, published in the May edition of the
journal, says you can't outrun a bad diet and that
although regular exercise reduces the risk of developing
a number of health issues such as heart disease,
dementia, some cancers and type 2 diabetes, it doesn't
promote weight loss unless it is paired with dietary
changes.
Worldwide obesity has doubled since 1980, according
to the World Health Organization, with 600 million
people globally categorised as obese. In the UK obesity
affects one in four adults, according to the NHS.
The NHS defines obesity as adults who have a Body
Mass Index of 30 or over.
The authors of the study say the public is "drowned by
an unhelpful message" from the food industry that
obesity is caused entirely by a lack of exercise, going so
far as to describe the tactics used as "chillingly similar"
to those employed by big tobacco companies when the
links between smoking and lung cancer were first
revealed.
“The tobacco industry successfully stalled government
intervention for 50 years," they say. "This sabotage was
achieved using a ‘corporate playbook’ of denial, doubt,
confusing the public and even buying the loyalty of bent
scientists, at the cost of millions of lives.”
The food industry has also shifted the conversation to
simple calorie counting, the authors write. But it's the
source of calories that matters, the editorial says,
arguing that sugar calories promote the storage of fat
and make people more hungry, while calories that
actually come from fat make a person feel full.
The authors point to a study in the academic journal
Nutrition that says the single most effective way to
counter obesity is to restrict the intake of carbohydrates.
The editorial also strongly criticises sugary drinks,
saying the association between "junk food and sport,
must end." It calls on the British government to put a tax
on sugary drinks and ban the advertising of junk food as
well as saying gyms shouldn't sell the beverages.
In a statement emailed to Mashable,
Britain's Food and Drink Federation strongly rejected
comparisons with the tobacco industry, calling them
"absurd and offensive".
