Lesson:Characteristics of Solids According to Size

Objectives:1. Name solids of different sizes2. Group different solids based on their size3. Measure accurately the size of a solid4. Participate in group activities

Reference:K to 12 Learners Material pp. 5-6K to 12 Teachers Guide pp. 8-10

Materials:1 solid, ruler

Activities:PrimingPicture/IllustrationShow and post pictures of different objects on the board.Ask: What are the objects posted on the board? How do these objects different from each other?

Add two more photos showing the length like photos of a pencil and a broomstick.

Activity Activity Sheet 4: Do Solids Have Same or Different Sizes?

Analysis(must be guided by the observations made from Activity 4)1. Can you tell if the solid is big or small, long or short, fat or thin? How can you tell ? Will you show your solids to your classmates?(Answers vary depending on the kind and sizes of solids brought to class.)Example: Yes. I have two balls. This ball is big, the other is small.

2. Yes. I have two pencils. This one is long, the other one is short. ) Note: Emphasize that another way of describing the size of the solids is by comparing.

3. Did you put the solids on the correct table? What are your bases in grouping the solids?? (Yes. We based the grouping on the sizes of the solids. Long solids are grouped into 1 group, short solids are grouped into another group, big solids are grouped into another group. )

4. How did you measure the solids? What is the length your solids? the width ? ( Answers vary )

AbstractionHow do we determine the different sizes of solids?Different measuring devices can be used in determining the size of objects. Comparing is another way of knowing the size of the objects.

ApplicationForm a dyad.Ask the pupils to:a. observe then describe the solids based on their sizesb. measure the length and the width of the solids.c. describe the solids as big and small, long and short or fat and thin.

Check the accuracy of the measurement. Emphasize that a good measurement must have the value and the unit.

ClosureHow did you group the solids?Do solids have their own size? similar or different from other solids?How did measurement help you in describing the size of the solid?(Solids can be grouped according to their sizes. Each solid has its own size. By looking at two solids of the same kind, we can tell if one is big and the other is small, short or long, fat or thin. Solids may have similar or different sizes with other solids. Measuring their sizes with a ruler will tell if the solids have the same or different sizes. )

Assessment Name objects found in the room. Tell the size of the objects using a ruler or meter stick. Get the exact measurement of each object.

AgreementList down objects found at home and in school. Describe their sizes.

Direction: Activity Sheet 4: Do Solids Have Same or Different Sizes?

1. Bring out and name the solids you brought.

2. Tell something about them. Record your observations. Share observations among your classmates.

3. Group the solids according to size and put them in their proper places on the table.

4. Describe the size of the different solids. Record in your notebook.

5. Get your ruler and measure the length and the width of the 2 solids you brought to class. Record your measurements.

6. Answer the following questions: Can you tell if the solid is big or small, long or short, fat or thin? How can you tell?

Did you put the solids on the correct table? What are your bases in grouping the solids?
