As our Brothers are gettingready to head back to school, Iwanted to give some advice froma Brother who works for a uni-versity and sees students make

the same mistakes semesterafter semester. I teach this tomy students in class, but manydont listen until it is too late...So Brothers, here is some freeadvice from me on how to besuccessful in college.

Be Prepared - Yeah I know wearent Boy Scouts, but man theyhad that one down... You needto PLAN the semester out and

start on the right foot. Have yourbooks for the rst day of class, write notes on your syllabus andbe organized and prepared witha new folder and sit up front.

Set Your Schedule - I tell my students, set yourschedule or your schedule will set you. Make aweekly schedule of when classes are, when youwork, when chapter meetings are, and most im-portantly when study time is.... THEN put things

in your schedule like xBox, your girl, cleaningyour rims, and stroll practice.

Dene Your Priorities - What do YOU want to ac-complish this semester? Then review your sched-ule... your schedule should point to your priori-ties. Then, at midterms review your actual weeklyschedule and ask yourself, does this schedulelook like a person with the priorities I set? Thenadjust your schedule accordingly.

    FROM THEPRESIDENT

Visualize the Success - Withosounding like my college soc-cer coach you have to visualizsuccess. Then I want you totake it up a notch by working

backwards from that success. So, you want an A? That meayou need an A on the nal, thameans you need to actuallystudy for the nal, that meansyou should do homeworkthroughout the semester... fol-low those steps and you actu-ally WILL achieve the successyou wanted.

    Tell Someone - Peer pressure

is a powerful force, use it tohelp you WIN. This is where thBrotherhood hits the pavemenand gets to work. Tell one of thBrothers in your chapter whatyour priorities are this semes-

ter. Whether it is landing an internship, raisinggrades, doing your grad school applications...whatever it is nd a partner to help keep you ontask.

As we all know, we are in college for one thing,an education. That education will not only betteour life, but better the lives of our family, our community and our world. So please, nd successthis fall on campus and know that our Brothersare there for you and are pulling for you to suc-ceed. Just remember, PLAN and THEN YOUWILL WIN!

    Take care Brothers! Peace.

Amin: First and Foremost, could youplease introduce yourself? Fernando:

My name is Fernando P. Tirado andI was born and raised in WashingtonHeights, NYC of parents of PuertoRican descent. I am one of the Found-ing Brothers for the Pi Chapter atStony Brook. My line name is Dedos, and I was the anchor for my line thatcrossed on April 4th, 1992

Amin: What did you major in duringundergrad? And what kind of extra-curricular activities were you involvedin? Fernando: I rst attended SUNY

Farmingdale from 1988 to 1991,where I obtained my Associates de-gree in Biomedical Engineering Tech-nology. I then attended SUNY StonyBrook from 1991 to 1994, where I ob-tained my BA in Political Science withconcentrations in Mass Media, West-ern Hemisphere History, and UrbanPolitics. As an undergrad, I served asthe President of SLB, Public RelationsChair for the Latin American StudentOrganization, Founder and Editor forthe Universitys rst Latino student-

based newspaper, interned for theLatin American Cultural Center, servedas a resident assistant, co-foundedthe annual Latin Block Party at StonyBrook, and started my own part-timemarketing company, FT Graphics.

Amin: Since graduating from college, what has your career been like, anyhighlights? Fernando: Initially, mycareer did not take off after graduatingcollege. I worked several jobs beforeI landed my rst job with the NYC De-

partment of Health as a Health Inspec-tor. It was my company that helped mestay aoat to support my wife and soninitially. Since then, however, I have 15years of public service and currentlyserve as the District Manager for acommunity board in the Bronx. I putmy business on hold after 10 yearsso that I can focus more on my careerand family, but I value tremendouslythe experience and am consideringstarting it up in the near future.

    I have always put family,

community engagement, and businessdevelopment as my priorities, althoughlately local politics and its impact oncommunity planning have becomeincreasingly important to me.

Amin: Could you please speak onyour political aspirations? Why statesenate? Fernando: I recently at-tempted to get on the ballot for StateSenator of the 33rd District, but asof August 1st, my candidacy for thatofce has ended. While I am disap-pointed from being knocked from theballot, I am grateful for the experienceand come away better equipped forthe next time. The NYS legislature andthe Senate specically, is one of themost dysfunctional legislatures in thecountry. I attempted to run for that po-sition because I wanted to stand up formy community against a government

that has forgotten that it is of thepeople, by the people, for the people.

Amin: During your time as a brotherwhat has Sigma Lambda Beta donefor you and Vice Versa? Fernando:While still an undergrad, I began writ-ing and designing the El Iluminadornewsletter and received the Brother ofthe Year Award in 1993 for starting thisfor the brotherhood. After graduating,I worked with several brothers acrossthe nation and we were able to trans-

form the newsletter into a national

magazine, of which I served as Edin-Chief. I also joined the NY AlumAssociation where I serve in variou

capacities. As part of the AA, we haheld several career workshops andnetwork events over the years forbrothers in the NYC area.

Amin: How did your involvement wSLB change once you had a familyand graduated? Fernando: I am sinvolved, although in a limited capaity, but try to give back whenever Ican. I now have three children, onewho is a couple of years from goincollege, but it hasnt stopped me fr

doing my part when I can.Amin: As a brother who helped maSLB coast to coast, did you ever imine youd be joining an organizatioas diverse and grand as it is todayFernando: I am proud to be part oan organization that has grown Coto Coast, and deep down I knew tit would eventually happened. I sawthat when I rst met Brothers Bal-tazar Mendoza and Jose Rodriguewhen they rst exposed our line to

values of the fraternity back in 199The fraternity has had its share of cesses and growing pains as with organizations. I think I was most prwhen I went to convention in Detro2008 and saw how well organized dedicated (and how large!) our broerhood has grown.

Amin: Have any anecdotes on howSLB has changed in your opinion othe years. Fernando: No anecdoteso to speak, but just a reminder tha

we are in this brotherhood for reasthat are bigger than the individualsthat comprise it, that it does not en

    just because you graduate.

Amin: Any advice to the brothersacross the nation, both new andveterans? Fernando: That we aresupposed to be diligent role modeland a light for future generations obrothers and those around us in oucommunity.

Tired of looking in the mirror andseeing the same old weak, out ofshape body? Thats okay, you donthave to admit it. Cant make it tothe gym? Yeah, we know (excusesare tools of the incompetent...). Orhave you tried every workout andstill cant get the results you want?Well enough crying already and dosomething about it. Thoroughbred

training is here to help you achieveyour dream body. Discipline is thekey to success, in all aspects of yourlife. You can do anything that yourmind allows you to and this trainingregimen is here to help you. Thisworkout regimen is intended to makeyou trim fat from your body, becomestronger (physically and mentally),and have more self-discipline in yourevery day life.

In todays day and age, workout pro-grams are everywhere. Just abouteveryone who is into tness hasheard about P90X. Americans spendtons of money gym membershipstoo. But the P90X program isnt foreveryone, nor does everyone haveaccess to fancy workout equipment.Nonetheless, programs like this ac-tually work because they incorporate

    three basic training rules.

    THREE TIPS FOR SUCCESS

You really only need three major tipsfor success. There is no big secretto getting the body you want. Treatyour body right and your body, inturn, will treat you right. Follow these3 steps and youll be okay.

    Consistency

You have to work out CONSIS-TENTLY. This means you cant takany days off, you cant put limita-tions on your workouts, and youcant make excuses for not workinout. If you want something, go get Thats just the way it is. You want tbody? Well work for it! And the onlway you can actually achieve it, is exercise consistently. Taking a day

off is out of the question. Developa routine, work out at a certain timof the day (everyday), and keep atit. Have a partner to work out with, that way you all can hold each othaccountable to the commitment.Realistically, you should be workinout about 5 times per week.

make. Lets put it this way... youcant work out for two hours, then gohome and eat a super-sized cheese-burger value meal. Uh eh! It doesntwork that way. What you put intoyour body is your fuel; it also shapesyour body. Fatty, high cholesterol, and sodium-lled foods will not only

decrease your chances of gettinghe body you want... theyll also kill

you! Additionally, you have to watchhe amount of alcohol you consume.

Drinking lots of alcohol equates toots of calories. Too many calories ina day isnt always good. So be care-ul what you put into your body.

    ntensity

Heres the other thing people dont

do. Ever hear someone complain, Iwork out every day and cant shedany weight? Thats because youollygag around in the gym, watch-ng TV, texting, and reading Glamourmagazine. It doesnt work that wayeither. You have to sweat, work outhard... and with some intensity. Notonly that, but you have to have somevariety in your workout. INTENSEworkouts do not mean going through

the motions on the stair-stepper orslowly jogging around a track. Youhave to switch it up, with workoutsthat are difcult and intense. Changeit up.. one day ride a bike, the nextrun, the day after that swim laps in apool, etc.

Where am I going with this? You gotit.. developing a high intensity workout regimen that you can do in theprivacy of your own home. If youfollow these three tips, youll improveyour appearance, have higher ener-gy levels, feel better about yourself, and be healthier. Hard work alwayspays off.

    Remember that.

Before you dive into the Thorough-bred workout itself, here are a fewreminders

Make sure to stay hydrated. Youshould drink at least 8 glasses ofwater a day anyway.

Dont be afraid to try somethingnew... branch out and broadenyour horizons. Youre not goingto look weird. Have some con-

dence in yourself. You cant mthe club in the tub.

No one is going to make you danything. You have to be com-mitted to yourself and do thison your own. You dont need tospend your paycheck on a per

sonal trainer. Your drive mustcome from within. If you dontpush yourself, no one else willNo excuses, just results.

Stay focused. Youre not goinghave the body you want after oday, so keep at it.

Remember, you can work out home but feel free to go to a gif you have access. Also, feelfree to workout outside, utilize bicycle or pool. Variety never hanything.

Now to the fun part.. the workoutsThis workout regimen is based offa series of workouts, mostly takingthe form of a High Intensity IntervaTraining (H.I.I.T.) system. H.I.I.T. ahigh intensity cardio workouts thatare intended to burn fat.

    WORKOUTS

Okay, heres the deal. Youre going to do at leastwo of the workouts in each of the categories for

at least 30 seconds. Youll do three sets and youllhen have a 30 second break in between sets. Easy

enough, right? 30 seconds is the beginners level. As you progress, youll slowly work your way up to minute.. then 2 minutes. If you can do three sets

of these workouts for 2 minutes straight, youre

eady for P90X. If you dont have a stop watcho time yourself, round the time or work out until

    exhaustion.

The entire workout shouldnt take you longer than30 minutes. Start with some regular cardio exercis-es for about 10 minutes. This means, you can run,un steps, swim, or ride a bike. But go for at least0 minutes and push yourself at a moderate to high

evel. Remember this has to be intense. Advancedhoroughbreds can go for 20 minutes or higher.

    Make sure to

    stay hydrated.

    You should

    drink at least

    8 glasses of

    water a dayanyway.

    Exercise Group A

Punch outs- Punch outs are a great way to shred yourupper body (mainly your shoulders). You want to work onyour form, which takes a standard boxing position. Keepyour guard up, extend one of your sts and punch, aiming aparticular point. When you detract your extended arm, youropposite arm should replace it and punch the same point.

Youll do this repeatedly and rapidly.

    Jumping jacks

Running in Place- Run in place by chopping your feetand get your knees as high as they can go. Chop your legsfast. Remember, if youre just beginning- you only go for 30seconds- so make it good.

    Exercise Group B

Squat thrusts- Squat thrusts are essentially standing inan upright position and then squatting down, as if you weresitting on a chair. Your knees should be bent at a 90 degreeangle and your body shouldnt pass below your knees. Dothis, up and down at a high level, for 30 seconds and yourlower body will be good. For advanced thoroughbreds, tryjumping up when you come up from a squat

Taebo Knees With taebo knees, you want to get a widebase (with your feet). Start with your arms raised in the airand then bring them down- as if youre pulling down. At thesame time, raise one knee up in the air (your arms and kneewill come towards and surpass each other, like a pulley sys-

tem). Do this rapidly, back and forth with each knee.Burpees

    Exercise Group C

    Wall squats

Towel jumps For towel jumps, wrap a towel up and placeit on the ground. Jump back and forth over it. Seems easy, right? Try not to step all over the towel

    Mountain climbers

    Exercise Group D

Pushups For advanced, try elevating off the ground for ajump push up

    Ab-core

Crunches Foot throws Plank Scissor kick Bicycle

    Cool down

    Jump rope or towel jumps

If you follow this regimen, youll be on your way. Youdont need steroids, expensive workout programs, and personal trainers to achieve your dreams. Youcan do this on your own. But you have to stay disci-plined. Always remember the three tips for successand youll be ne. Be well.

The A,B,Cs ofearning As and Bs

The rst part of test prep is the textbook, without it many times you arelost in an ocean of information andno map to guide you. The questionis then, are you using your mapcorrectly? You may have the mapupside down and not even know it.

Learn To Read Skim throughyour reading assignment rst to getthe big picture, then read in detailto understand the content. Lastly, review the text so that you cansummarize.

Summarize That little white page at the end of your chapter isthe perfect place to write out thekey points and ideas. That way,

later on when you have to studyyou have a great study reviewguide with all the key points.

Lecture Prep If you didnt pre-pare for the lecture, every point isnew and important that your teach-er talks about. Thus, by coming to

class already prepared you cansimply write down the key pointsthat your teacher expands upon.

So you have read through the textbook, took active notes in class, asked questions to expand uponcomplex information but nowyou have to study for the test. Theproblem is no matter how muchyou study you just cant seem tolearn the information. What you

might not realize is that the problem isnt the information but howwhere you are studying it.

Location, Location, Location as any Realtor might say, location is key. Where you study mahave a dramatic affect of how yo

learn. When you step onto thebasketball court, baseball diamoor volleyball court you are readyto play, your mind is focused onone thing the game. In that miset, it is hard to get distracted fryour task because your focus isenhanced based on your locatioWhy study in your room where yeat, sleep, relax, Facebook, etcYour room is an eclectic collecti

not the type of place that is goingto foster an education-rst mentali-ty. Try the library, a place dedicatedto learning is a great location toget you into that can-do-can-learnattitude.

Organization - Make sure your life

is organized so that you stay ontop of all your assignments. A plan-ner should be more than just a list

of deadlines, make sure to createlist, prioritize tasks, and give your-self leeway time so that youre notstuck cramming the night before.

Take a Break When you are inhigh school you would have a 5-10minute break in-between classes, did you ever realize how that littlebreak you used to get your booksand walk around a little reallyhelped you to get back on track foryour next class? The same goes

for you today, a little 5-10 minutebreak after 45 minutes of studyingwill help you to get back on track. The average maximum we canstay focused is around 45 minutes, after that we get easily distractedand are less likely to retain infor-mation.

Prime Time No we arent talkingabout cable either. Knowing when

you function best is key to becominga successful student. Do you knowwhen your optimal study time is?

Now you are ready to take on anytest, you know the proper steps totake but it is up to you to motivate

yourself to do it. Inspiration withoaction is knowingly limiting yourown potential. So get out thereand be an active student in theclass and out. When your teachetells you that For every one houin class you should be spendingthree out of the class preparing,

make sure your planner reectsthat kind of dedication. As an athlete will train for competitions, yomust train for your future careerand every test is a hurdle are yprepared?

Acronyms FOIL for math - FirstOuter Inner Last helps you toremember the order to solve a mathproblem.

Rhythm and Rhyme Thirtydays hath September, April, June, and November, or In 1492 Colum-bus sailed the ocean blue.

Acrostics HOMES to help youremember the great lakes.

Alphabet Method - B= BlackFriday H = Herbert Hover (remember26 key points about the great de-pression or any topic)

Teach teach complex ideas andequations to a study group, friend,or roommate. Nothing helps you tolearn something better then trying toteach it to someone else.

Creative StudyingWhen you were young everything was done creatively in a fun engaging way; why does that have to changenow that we are adults? Sure, the ideas are a little more complex but that doesnt change the fact that by makin

learning fun you are more apt to retain the information.

    What you might not

    realize is the prob-

    lem isnt the infor-

    mation but how or

    where you are study-

    ing it.

    You moved into your residence

hall, ready to start your school yearbright eyed and bushy tailed 2months later your room looks likea quarantine zone and you cantseem to shake that cold. Well, hereare some helpful tips to keepinghealthy while living on campus.

Do your laundry whilegrabbing that hoodie stashedunderneath your bed seems like

a time saving, good idea, it couldend up costing you in the long run.Dirty clothes can pick up and holdbacteria especially if you sneezeinto your sleeves. Taking the timeto keep up with your laundry canprevent you from getting sick allover again.

Use Hand Sanitizer/Wipes Use the wipes to keep your room

clean to prevent spreading germsfrom your computer desk to the

door handle. Hand sanitizer canhelp you from catching someoneelses cold every time you open adoor or use the desk in the class-room. This holds especially truewhen the sickly student before youfell asleep and drooled all over thatdesk that you are using in class.Additionally, make sure to alwayswash your hands.

Take out your trash It islled with bacteria and even if it istucked away in a corner your tinyroom is too small to really ever haveit out of the way. More so than justbacteria your trash can can attractbugs and rodents. Take the walkdown to the dumpster as often asyou can to prevent trash buildup, withyou and your roommate it is easy toll up your tiny trash can daily.

Dont Share Drinks Thisshould go without saying but unfortunately it still happens. Saliv

spreads bacteria so easily, besmart and dont be lazy, washingtwo cups instead of one is worththe hassle.

Flip Flops - You are using acommunal shower, who knowswhat is being tracked into whereyou walk around to rinse off. Weip ops to prevent athletes footwarts, or a host of other hassles

Clean, Clean, Clean - Yourmini-fridge, microwave, bedsheets, desk, and everything elsin your tiny room. Make sure noto forget to get the inside of themicrowave and mini-fridge sincethis is where all your food goes.Bed and dust mites can spreadgerms if you dont regularly wasyou bed sheets and quilt -not

including what it can do to yourallergies- so be sure to clear themoff weekly for a good wash. Also, consider purchasing a bed cover if

you are using a used mattress, thiswill zip all the way around your bedto prevent the previous users fromhaving an affect on your health.

Flu Shots they are availableeverywhere from the campusnurse to your local drugstore, takeadvantage of them. One thing tonote, is that you need to get thisshot before you become ill, oth-erwise it will not work if you arealready sick.

Be Healthy Be active and eatright. An active healthy lifestyle canhelp build up your immune system,so try to substitute those pizza rollsfor fruit and vegetables and TVtime for an hour in the gym. Thisalso includes getting plenty of rest,by depriving your body of adequate

rest you run the risk of loweringyour immune systems ability toght illnesses.

Air out your room If youhave the room closed off using anAC or plug in heater to regulateyour room temperature you arehoarding all those airborne patho-gens in your room. Open up thewindow to get some real fresh airscent instead of that Febreezebottle your mom bought you.

    Vitamin D-3 While you al-

ways hear vitamin D is good foryou, many are turning to VitaminD-3 to help prevent and ght offillness. Flu, as well as many otherillnesses, are associated with lowlevels of Vitamin D (and D-3). Vi-tamin D-3 comes from sunlight butyou can get similar small doses of itfrom vitamins. So get out in the sunor make sure that you take a vita-min to supplement your lack of D-3.

Sure these tips help you to prevefrom becoming sick but what if itis already too late for preventativmeans? I remember High School being the timeof dress to impress. Everyone hadto have the newest, best brand namearticles of clothing in order to be in. Well,

at least everybody that was somebody.Getting caught at a recycled fashionstore was a big no no. For the longestwhile, I too had this mentality. How-ever, having to move out the house at16 made asking for new clothes a littlemore difcult. Soon, buying clothesbecame a luxury you only did once ina while. Next thing I knew, college hitand tuition became a necessity, whileclothes a greater luxury. I found myself

needing to change a few things. I stillhave a shoe fetish that says, 24 pairsof shoes is still not enough. We all haveour guilty pleasure, be it shoes, hats orBeta gear. However, I dont know aboutyou, but this dreadful economy makesit difcult to set aside a few bucks foranything that isnt an absolute necessity.Sadly, that leaves my wardrobe budgetin a non-existent state, and when I mustpick up something new, nding dealson clothes shoes and anything else

becomes a must. I mean, just becauseyoure broke, doesnt mean you cantlook good. After all, we Fresh til death, even when we dead broke. So hereare some tips that may help you savemoney and keep you looking fresh:

    1. Ignore Trends. They change almostby the hour, so it will be costly to stayon top of the constant change. After all,a pair of Jordans come out more thanonce a year and by the time you get

enough money to buy the new pair, they will only be new until the next $170pair comes out. So instead focus on de-ning your own individual style. In otherwords, just do you.

    2. Get Some Inspiration. Once yougure out what your style is, look for ar-rangements online or at the stores with-out having to worry about price. Just putit all together and either take pictures

or make a mental note of what it is youliked. Once you know what you want, letthe money saving begin.

    3. Take your inspiration to qual-ity off-price stores. Once youget your inspiration from thehigher-priced stores, you cannow take that style andnd similar pieces fromoff-price or lower-pricedstores such as T.J. Maxx,Marshalls, H&M, Target orany recycled fashion storeand put together a similarlook! If you buy clothesthat t you properly, meaning not too tight, andnot hanging off of you,you will look good and noone will care where you boughtyour clothes. You could get that $300look for only $50 if you shop at the rightplaces.

    4. Of course one of the best waysyou can save money on clothing is by

choosing colors and fabrics you canwear year round. Guys are lucky in thatwe typically wear cotton shirts both insummer and winter and pants or shortsare always a good look. The transitionfrom spring/summer to fall/winter is aseasy as throwing on a hoodie or sportscoat. The trick is to choose colors thatare neutral, like blue or white for a dressshirt and beige or black for pants. If youare more of the dressy type, a black vestcan go with many different colored shirts

all you need is a nice pair of jeans andyou have multiple outts. On the otherhand, if you want to keep it casual, awhite, purple or black t-shirt, jeans andall white or black shoes can be all youneed. Keep your hoodies and sportscoats neutral, too, and you are set. Aslong as you can wear it year round, andnding the right shade of purple is notan issue, you have nothing to worryabout.

    5. New is Not Always Better. If youwant the brand name but not thebrand price, looking into RecycledFashion stores is always fun. Youmay not nd exactly that one butyou can nd this one, which isthe same brand for a fraction ofthe price while still looking fresh.

Everything from pants, shirts, shoes or accessories can befound at these stores. Eventhe fancy, overpriced blaz-ers can be found at thesestores for way less.

    6. Its about the Look.Having the right acces-sories can make or breakyou. A nice watch or thecorrect pair of glasses can

make a huge difference. These days so many com-panies are producing reallycool watches that look muchmore expensive than theyreally are. No longer do you

need to buy a fake Rolex (that wontlast either) when there are betterquality choices out there. So pricedoesnt matter, as long as it looksgood, wear it.

    7. Seasons always return. The endof season sales is the best time topick up some great stuff. This iswhen I like to swoop in for a shop-ping spree. Some retailers discountas much as 80% off. So you can buyyour winter clothes at the beginningof summer and your summer clothesat the beginning of winter.

    8. From Head to Toe. Make sure tolook fresh from head to toe becausesomething as simple as ironing orshoe polishing can make the differ-

ence of a lifetime. Some beat up olddress shoes can become almost newwith shoe polish and a little TLC. Ifbeing a Beta has taught you any-thing, its attention to detail. Takeadvantage of that and make it work.

    9. Some things you cannot buy.Make sure to look clean cut or wekept in the areas that you cannoteasily change such as hair, handand teeth. Personal hygiene andphysical appearance can be the gest difference when looking gooIf you look good even a garbage

    can make a t.

    10. Walk the Walk. Its all about attitude. If you walk with swaggerand condence this will radiate inyour physical appearance. After aElegance is a question of personity, more than ones clothing. -JePaul Gaultier.

Looking good should not cost youarm and a leg. All it takes is a littl

creativity and the swagger to makit work. There are no rules set onstone and when it comes to styleyou are the master of whats in, wworks and what doesnt.

Every time we embark on a newphase of our life the demands on ourtime begin to change and what we

did yesterday is no longer what weneed to do, can do or have time todo today. College students experi-ence this every semester and to aneven greater degree at the start ofthe school year. The best thing thatwe can do to combat the chang-ing demands on our time is to workourselves into a rhythm. Those ofus who are strollers out there knowwhat its like to catch a rhythm. Togo from absolutely still to suddenly

breaking out into a precision formatat the rst sounds of Rick James orSwag Surn. Hitting every step, matching your brother, stride forstride, and owing with the beat.

No brother though, regardless ofhow much rhythm he has, mastersa stroll right away. It takes practice, practice and more practice to hit the

oor with condence in front of acrowd of people. And once youreout there you cant just quit if you

miss a beat or lose a step youve gotto jump right back in the mix, movingon and forgetting that the mistakeever happened. Our daily life doesnot differ much from this just liketheres a rhythm to a song that getsus moving and keeps us focused, there is also a rhythm to our lives. In both strolling and our daily livesit is all too easy to miss a step, losethe beat and become unfocused; but

just like when youre out there stroll-ing, regardless of missteps or mis-takes youve got to keep on moving.

Whenever I use to learn a new strollmy line brother and I would pick asong that we felt worked with therhythm of the moves. We didntdeviate from that song until we gotthe steps down to perfection. Usingthe same beat over and over again

it was easier to match the movesto the rhythm and get in the ow.Needless to say the stroll always

looked the best when we had achance to do it to the song we hadbeen practicing it on all week but bthat point we were able to performit to any song with a similar beat.Using a schedule on a regular basand making sure it is up to date every week is a great tool to help youcatch the ow of your life. By visuizing your week and keeping regultrack of it youll begin to catch thepatterns and ride through the weelike you stroll on a beat.

Whether youre just learning a stroor youve been doing it for yearseventually youre going miss a steor make a mistake. While a mastestroller recovers quickly, any mis-take has the possibility of throwingoff the whole line. For this reasonits critical to be able to jump back

into a stroll regardless of the pointyou leave off on. If you cant catchthe beat again or remember whatcomes next, its usually a good ideato jump out of the line and jumpback in at the end once the stepsstart over. If youve been keeping aschedule, you may be able to jump

right back into the mix, acting likethe misstep never took place. Ormaybe you have another techniqueto get yourself going again. Person-ally, I combine my schedule with theUrgent-Important To-Do List matrixdiscussed in the 7 Habits of HighlyEffective People. The combo ofthese two ensures that 80% of the

time Im able to jump right back inlike I never missed a beat.

However theres still that 20% of thetime that I get so lost that Ive got to

jump out of the line and start overfrom step one in the sequence. Inmy life, there are a few things that I

can always count on to get me backon track and moving again. One isa call to my wife, my parents or myline brothers. These are the peoplewho know me best and can easilytell when theres something a littleoff in my life. We dont always needto talk about exactly whats goingon that is throwing me for a loop but

just having a conversation with theis usually enough to get me goingagain. If that doesnt seem to worI make sure to get myself back intoa work-out schedule. Having thatset time where I go to the gym andwork on improving myself physicalenables me to also clear myself

mentally and get back in the stroll. While these things work for me, themay not work for you. I encourageyou to nd a few activities that canfocus you and get you back into thrhythm of your life.

Leaving my mind and my body fromits common principle

I have embarked on the journey tomake more of myself at the pinnacle

For over the years, months or daysthat have began and ended

The love of my brotherhood hasmade me more than the letters that

    represent it

Remembering the days when I onlyused to dream

Before I could every be implemented

Surng the web and engaging my-self in the presence

My eyes glazed with that royalpurple intention

Understanding only in my heart butnot fully knowing what I learned inthe dark

Till the day came and my summonswas accepted

Befriending another man who soughtthe same light

And it came to be that he was my kinamongst the twilight

    Earning our stripes

    Earning the right

    Pledging Lambda Beta

    All day and all night

Our blood, sweat and tears trans-formed itself

To that precious oil bestowed upon us

And we progressed across the pits todiscover our true potential

In the realm of Lambda Beta men

    Wisdom was the tool

Embracing our culture was the fuel

To build a better man was one half

To serve our community was the rightpath

    Through thick and thin

With the passion of a guerilla soldier

    With much bolder plans

Will I ever go through it again?

    Some one will always ask

But even if I gave them my sense

    They would not comprehend

Even if we worked twice as hard

    They could not comprehend

Even if we accomplished much mothan harm

They would try to unfold the negat

Even if we gave more than any otorg

They will act as if we are nothingmore

Now to live as an honorable LambBeta man is to befriend humility

And to live as a better man takesnobility

Since living the creed is one of a k

So we must uplift ourselves througthe toil and the strife

From our rebirth till the light dontshine

My body might be in the dirt

But my soul will always be resur-rected

Because Mi corazon is forever re-severado enternamente

How do you look at recruiting? Canyou have a high quantity of qual-ty men? Do you use the search foruality as an excuse for a lack ofuantity? Are those tried and true re-

cruitment strategies becoming a littlemore tired than tried and a little lessrue every year you use it? Albert

Einstein once dened insanity asoing the same thing over and overagain and expecting different results, actor in the ever changing demo-

graphics on your campus and youbegin to see the problem. Further-more, somewhere along the lines ofbecoming a brother we forget thathose new to college and Greek lifeont have the understanding of the

Greek system, its benets or theconcept of brotherhood that we do.

Dale Carnegie is the founder of theelf help movement, any personal

or professional development booktems off of the ideas that Carn-

egie founded in his book, How toWin Friends and Inuence People.Through a little bit of know how andadjustments to t you the moderncollegiate Greek you can becomebetter prepared and armed to workwith potential interest and with

    clients in your future professionalcareer.

Principle 1: Become Genuinelynterested in Other People

Most commonly used word in con-versations is the personal pronoun. (Carnegie, 1937) We think that

a ashy poster board or step showwill get someone interested in SigmaLambda Beta, yet we fail to realize

hat spectacle is cheap in everythingbut cost. They will never know howwe live out the principles, if we neverrst become interested in them itshe basic law of reciprocity.

    Principle 2: Smile

Fraternal brotherhood is built rstand foremost out of friendship, it ishe foundation on which all other

    bonds are created. That random

freshman, scared out of their mindwalking around the recruitment fairis not going to walk up to you andstart actively engaging themselvesin a conversation if you are staringthem down with your cholo shadeson. If you want to be approached,be approachable or better yet take

ve steps away from your table andintroduce yourself to them.

Principle 3: Remember That aPersons Name is, to that person, the most important sound in anylanguage

As a collegiate Latino-based frater-nity we will come across many indi-viduals from various backgrounds, most of which will never attempt tolearn a bit of Spanish. Point being, ishis name Hector or Hctr becausethere is a difference and hearing thesweet sound of your name beingpronounced correctly will leave alasting impression. Accent aside, simply remembering their name willmake someone feel like they areimportant to you and the organiza-tion. Repeat their name before youlet go of their hand, repeat it in theconversation and write it down after

    they have left.

Principle 4: Be a Good Listener.Encourage others to talk aboutthemselves

The best way to remain condent isto control the conversation, the bestway to control the conversation isto monopolize the listening and thebest way to monopolize the listen-ing is to ask open ended questions.

If you bombard some guy with SLBfacts and send him on his way, hewont even remember who you are.If you get him talking about him-self, showing interest in him as anindividual he will be more likely toremember you and have a positiveexperience interacting with SLB. Thekey is to learn the individual rst, theorganization will naturally come intothe conversation at a later point.

Principle 5: Talk in Terms of theOther Persons Interest.

Find your commonality, an interestyou both share and can discuss. Ifthey share an interest that a fellowbrother has, introduce them, butnever give a naked introduction.Naked introductions are when youwould just pass on the conversatioto someone else without giving atopic for them to transition into. Staoff by introducing them and thenreferring to the commonality theyshare, it could by a hobby, major, hometown or anything else that wilallow the individual to talk withinterms of their own interests.

Principle 6: Make the OtherPerson Feel Important And Do itSincerely.

Carnegie shares that, We all wantapproval of those with whom youcome in contact. We all want recognition of our true worth. And we allwant a feeling that you are importain the world. Why is this importantto the individual? It is because theydont know or understand the brotherhood yet, as it is not a tangible

thing that can be described accu-rately it is something one experi-ences after time and commitmentto the fraternity. Through a sincereinterest in an individual you can empower them to become a leader anthus inspire them to want to becoma Sigma Lambda Beta man. Donttry to sell them on features becausthey are yours, not theirs. Insteadhave them look at benets, what caSLB do to aid their reason for going

to college which traditionally are graduate, become successful, makfriends and to get a job?
