Storing the ProductForproperinstallation,theroof tilesneedtobestoredontheoriginalpalletonaflatsurface.Properstorageof theproductatthejobsiteisimportant.Theroof tilesarecamberedtoensurethatmaximumpressureistrans-ferredtotheleadingedgeof theroof tileduringinstallation.Do not double stack pallets.
Conditions:Performworkwhenexistingandforecastedweatherpermits.WorkshouldbeperformedinasafeandprofessionalmannerandwhenambientweatherconditionsarewithinthelimitsestablishedbyInSpireRoofingProducts.
Storage:InSpireroof tilesshouldnotbestoredonroof decksinsuchamannerastoover-stressand/ordamagethedeckandsupportingstructure.
Cold Weather Installation:InSpireroofingtilesshouldbestoredinoriginalpackaginginastoragefacilitywherethetemperaturemeetsorexceeds45°F.Useprotectivecoverageoverallpalletswhilebeingtemporarilystoredon-site.InSpireroof tilesmustbeconditionedatatemperaturenolowerthan45°Ffortwenty-four(24)hourspriortouse.InSpiremaybeinstalledattemperaturesaslowas32°Fbutmustbehandfastened,theuseof apneumaticgunbelow45°Fwillresultincrackingandwebbinginthefas-tenedarea.Besuretofollowthemanufacturer'sinstallationrequirementsforallunderlaymentandanyotherapplications.Complywithanyandalllocalbuildingcoderequirements.Note of Caution:Theroof tilescanbeslipperyundercertainconditionsandjobsitesafetyproceduresshouldbeenforced.

Roof VentingRoof ventilationisnecessaryforthelongevityof theroof system.Havingacoolatticinthesummerandadryatticinthewinterhelpspreventdamagetobuildingmaterials,reduceenergyconsumption,andpreventicedamming.Duringhotmonths,anun-ventedroof systemwillmaintainahighersurfacetemperature,thusshorteningthelifeof anyroof system.
Duringwintermonthsventilationisakeyfactortoremovemoisturefromtheattic.Warmmoistairinsideabuildingtravelsuptowardtheatticinwintermonths.Problemsoccurwhenwatervaporcomesincontactwithcoldbuildingmaterialsandcondensates.Thestructuralelementsof theatticwillabsorbmoistureandovertimemayleadtorottingwoodand/ormold.
Withabalancedventilationsystemsplitbetweentheridgeandsoffit,1squarefootof netfreeareaisrequiredforevery300squarefeetof atticfloorsspace.
Itisrequiredtohave1squarefootof ventilationforevery150squarefeetof atticfloorspaceif thisbalancecannotbeachieved.Ventilationisnecessaryforextendedlifeof theroof system.InSpireRoofingProductswillnotwarrantyanun-ventedroof and/orimproperlyventedroof system.
Ventilation Requirements for a Balanced Ventilation System 1.Determinethesquarefootageof theatticfloorspace;ex.Atticis45'x100'=4,500squarefeet.
2.If youwillbeabletoequallybalanceyourventilationsystem,dividetheatticfloorspaceby300.(4500÷300=15.)Theamountof NetFreeVentilationArea(NFVA)requiredinthisexampleis15squarefeet.
3.ConvertthistosquareinchesbymultiplyingtheNFVAby144.(15x144=2,160squareinchesNFVA.)
4.DividethetotalNFVAby2todeterminehowmuchventilationisrequiredintheupperandlowerportionsof theattic(2,160÷2=1,080squareinchesof NFVA.)
5.Nowdeterminehowmanyintakeandexhaustunitsarerequired,forexamplesoffitventandridgevent.
Itispermittedtousethe1/300ratiowhenatleast50percentbutnotmorethan80percentof theventilatedareaislocatedintheupperportionof theattic.If thisratiocannotbeachieved,aratioof 1squarefootNFVAforevery150squarefeetof atticfloorspacemustbeused.

4.InstallRidgeMasterPlususing3”roofingnails.RidgeMasterPlusshouldbeinstalled12"beyondtheslotopening.ForbestappearanceinstallRidgeMasterPlusalongtheentirelengthof theridge.
5.InstallInSpireRidgeCappiecesovertheRidgeMasterPlus,nailinginthedesignatedRidgeMasterPlusnailtargetarea.Use3"longStainlesssteelnails.
6.RidgeMasterPlushasanoverlapandanunderlapendthatinterlockwhenlaidendtoendinproperorientation.Thisunitesthe4footsectionsintoasinglestructuralintegrated,weathertightsystem.AlwaysinstallRidgeMasterPluswithoverlapendonoutsideterminalendof ridge.Youshouldalsocompleteyourridgeventwithfactoryendontheoppositeterminalendof theridge.

Spacing Between the Slate Roof Tiles1/4"spacertabsareprovidedoneveryroof tileandstartertiletoaidinmaintainingconsistenttilespacing.Thespacerswillallowforanymovementof theroof deckandexpansion/contractionof theroofingtile.
Laying Out 1/2 Roof Tiles or Cut Roof TilesWhenbeginningorfinishingwithacutpieceof slateroof tile,thecutedgeshouldbeinstalledinward.Themanu-facturededgeshouldbeinstalledtotheoutsideedgeof theroof.Thisistomaintainanacceptableroof appearancealongthegableedgeof theroof.
Thecentermarkof theroof tilecanbeusedasaguidetocuthalf-slates.Thiscanalsobeusedasaguidetokeepcoursesstraightandtoassistinmaintainingtheproper1/4"spacingwhenaligningwithintermittentverticalchalklines.DO NOT install tiles smaller than 3".Shouldtheuseof a3"tilebecomenecessary,cuttheprevioustilebackenoughtoallowa3"piecetobeused.
Roof Staging/Roof BracketsRoof pitcheswithsevereslopesrequireadditionalpreparationorstaginginordertoprovideasafeandfunc-tionalworkareawhileinstallingtheroof tile.Thestagingof theroof willrequiretheuseof roof bracketsandthesebracketsshouldbeinstalledaccordingtotheinstructionsprovidedbytheroof bracketmanufacturer.
Whenusingroof bracketswhileinstallingInSpireRoofingtiles,observethefollowingguidelines:
Installation 1.Locatethenailtargetsontheroof tileandplacetheroof bracketfastenerthroughtheroof tileto
eitherthefarrightorthefarleftof theroof tile,butonaplaneevenwiththenailtargets.
2.Installtheroof bracketandtoeboardinasafeandsecuremannerandinaccordancewiththeroof bracketmanufacture'sinstructions.
Removal 1.Lifttheroof tilethatoverlaysontheroof bracketfastener.
2.Removetheroof bracketfromthefastenerandlayitontopof theroof bracketfastener.
3.Laytheoverlayroof tileontopof thebracketandplaceapieceof woodblockingonthetopoverlaytile.
4.Ensuringthattheroof bracketispositionedovertheroof bracketfastener,hammerthewoodblockinganddrivetheroof bracketfastenerflushwiththesurfaceof theroof tile.
5.Followtheinstructionsandproceedtothenextstagingarea.
Roof Clean UpInareasof hipsandvalleyswheretherewillbeanincreasedcuttingof theroof tiles,itisrecommendedthattheseareasaresweptdailyandthecuttingsremovedfromtheroof surface.Thisisnotonlyforsafety,butalsotopreventanytrimmingsfromcloggingtheguttersanddownspouts.

PreparationInspectallareasof theroof surfacetobecovered.
1)Underallcircumstances,existingroofingmaterialsmustberemoveddowntothesubstratepriortoroof tileinstallation.
2)Thesurfaceareamustbeuniformlyflat,smooth,sound,cleanandfreeof irregularities.
3)Examineroof sheathingtoverifythatsheathingjointsaresupportedbyframingandblockingand/ormetalclips.
4)Verifythatsubstrateisslopedfordrainageandcompletelyanchoredtosoundframing.Anyforeignparticlesshallbecleanedfrominterlockingareastoensureproperseatingandtopreventmoistureintrusionandicedamming.Properprovisionsmustbemadeforflashingsandroof penetrations.
5)Eventhoughmetalflashingandotherspecialtyflashingsmaynotbetheresponsibilityof theroofingcontractor,theseitemsmustbeinplacepriortotheroof tileinstallation.Workbyothertradeswhichpenetratetheroof planemustbecompleted.
6)Producthandlingandstorageonaflatsurfaceisveryimportant.InSpireRoofinghasacambereddesigntoensurethatthemaximumpressureistransferredtotheleadingedgeof theroof tileduringtheinstallationprocess.Do not double stack pallets.
7)TechnicalBulletinsareavailabletoaddressspecificaspectsand/orrequirementsastheyrelatetocer-tainapplications.PleaseconsultthewebsiteorcontactInSpireRoofingforthisinformation.
Tear off and ReroofIntheeventof aroof tearoff,itisimperativethatthebuildingmaterialswilllastthelifetimeof theroofingmaterial.
Carefullyinspectdeckingmaterialtoensureitwilllastthelifeof theroof tile.RoofingovercompromiseddeckingmaterialwillvoidtheInSpireRoofingmanufacturerwarranty.

2)Onemethodof startingonahiproof istolocatethecenterof theroof areatobecovered.Frombothends,positionstarterpiecesandsnapahorizontallinefromthetopsof thestartersbetweenthesetwopoints.Nextsnapaverticalperpendicularline.Thiscanbedoneeasilybymarking3ftalongtheeve,thenwhere4ftand5ftintersectwillformaperpendicularline.Aslongastheratio3:4:5staysthesamethiswillholdtrue,forexample,21:28:35.Morehorizontalandverticallinesmaybesnappedtoensuretheroof tileswillstaytrueandplumbthroughoutinstallation.Beginbyplacingastartertileontherightandleftsideof theverticallinemaintaininga¼"spacingandcontinuetobothends.
3)Thestartercourseshouldoverhangamaximumof ½"attheeaveandattherakeedge.
4)Beginthefirstcourse.Withafullroof tile,aligncenterlocatorlineof theroof tiledirectlyovertheverticalbluechalkline.Continuetobothends,maintainingthe1/4"spacingbetweenroof tiles.(Seediagrambelow.)

a)Startertilesmaybeorderedpre-cut.Fulltilesmayalsobeusedonthestartercourse.
b)Thesestartertileswillbeusedasthefirstrowattheeveof theroof.
c)Tocreatetheoffsetfromcoursetocourse,usethecentermarkprovidedoneachtileandcutthetilelengthwise.Thisensuresthatthenailholesarecoveredwiththenextcoarseof tilesandnothrough-jointsareexposedtothedeck.
d)Strikethechalklineshorizontally,attheexposureleveldesired,toensurethatthetilesareinstalledstraightanduniform.Verticalchalklineswillhelpmaintainconsistencyinthekey-ways.
e)Spacertabsareprovidedoneachtiletoensureconsistentspacingbetweentiles.
f)Thereshallbenothrough-jointsfromtheroof surfacetotheunderlayment.
2)Eachsyntheticroof tileshallbefastenedwithaminimumof tworingshankroofingfasteners.Thefastenersmustbeaminimumof 1½"longand1/8"indiameterwitha3/8"diameterhead.Copperand/orstainlesssteelfastenersarerecommended.

2.Placetheshingleattheevebetweenthe2lines,thiswillgiveyouthepropertaperforthefirstcourse
3.Markupfromthetopof yourfirsttileyourexposure.Repeatuntilyoureachthetopof theturret.
4.Eachcoursewillhaveadifferenttaperasthepiecesgetsmallertowardsthetop.Youcannowplaceashingletoeachmarkanddeterminethetaperpercourse.

Donotleavedebrisundertheroof tileswhileinstallingthatwillpreventthedesignof theroof tilefromover-lappingonthecoursebelow,thusallowingthepotentialformoisturebuildupfromwinddrivenrainand/oricedams.
