Spring. In like a lion, out like a lamb. We photographed the Spring SKY on March 5. That day we awoke to a blizzard that blanketed most of southern Saskatchewan. Driving conditions were treacherous with vis-ibility near zero. By morning, 12 cm of snow had already fallen, and more was expected to fall with patches of freezing rain in Southern Saskatchewan. Temperatures continued to dip over the week and a col-lective curse could be heard far and wide. Fists raised to the heavens, we cried, “my kingdom for a snow blower or a hot vacation.”

Springtime in Saskatchewan always comes in like a lion. It is the season of water and ice, so it is fitting that our cover story this issue is the family who brings clear, clean water and gourmet ice to families, homes and businesses across Southern Saskatchewan. Paige, Chad, Dierks and Blake completely captivated the camera and in fact, the entire restaurant, and made us forget we were living our second winter that day.

Lynn’s coat is a one of a kind original design by Dean Renwick made of felted

wool from Ireland. The design combines a double breasted cut away style

reflecting the neckline of the ancient Kimonos, and a 19th century Victorian

bustle, with a cascade of ruffles coming from beneath. (Each ruffle was sewn and

gathered separately and laid out one at a time over 2.5 days). The coat is lined in

red and embroidered with an old Irish Blessing that says “Lord clothe me in the

robes of innocence”, which is to be said each morning as one is getting dressed.

Lynn is also wearing Black Orchid Jeans and a Club Manhattan necklace from

Queen V Fashion House and B.unique boots from Seed Sustainable Style. The

photo was taken on the snow-covered patio of Studio S Fashion House.

Financial planning for retirement For many of us, having a nest egg large enough to provide a meaningful retirement is a question. We wonder how much is enough? The answer is it depends on your personal circumstances, past, present and future.

To help stay on track to achieve your retirement goals, as well as other important financial goals, such as minimizing taxes or planning for the eventual transfer of your estate, consider the benefits of having a financial plan strategy.

One of the best ways to start is to step back and have an expert look at your overall financial situation and prepare a comprehensive written financial plan for you and your family. This type of financial plan addresses all aspects of your financial

affairs, including cash and debt management, tax and investment planning, risk management and retirement and estate planning. It ensures that you leave no stone unturned related to your financial situation and potential strategies to enhance your financial well-being.

In many cases, the key to a professionally prepared comprehensive financial plan is the level of customization it offers. A customized, comprehensive financial plan should include an in-depth discovery discussion of your goals, aspirations and objectives, a projection of your financial situation based on your current strategies and savings rate, recommendations of key investments, tax, estate and retirement planning strategies that are aligned with your goals, a projection of your financial situation if the recommended strategies are implemented and an action plan that summarizes the key recommendations with a clear guideline for you and your advisor to help monitor implementation.

Free Retirement Projection Service from Barbara March-BurwellBarbara can help you develop your retirement plan by showing you how to:

3Avoid subtle pitfalls that can cost you

3Find risk-managed investment alternatives for today’s ultra-low interest rates

3Boost your after-tax income

3Ensure your surplus capital is not needlessly exposed to your high tax rate

With her free service, you will receive detailed projections and recommendations based on your current situation. Most importantly, you will gain peace of mind knowing that you are still on track, and if you’re off track, how to get back on. She’S StyliSh, She’S Sleek, She’S Smart and she’s passionate about helping women entrepreneurs focus on achieving their definition of business success. She is Kristin Kutarna Gates, Founder of The Chic Strategist.

“I love fashion and I have a passion for strategy. A few years ago I discovered many women entrepreneurs do not have a business strategy. The main reason was simple: very few experts explain what a business strategy is, looks like or does from a woman entrepreneur’s point of view.”

“The Chic Strategist combines my love of strategy with my passion for fashion. My goal is to help women entrepreneurs create intelligent, stylish business strategies to impact their bottom-line results.”

“The most common question I am asked is, ‘What is a business strategy?’ A business strategy is what makes your business different and what success looks like for your business. Simple, right? Not exactly. This is where a strategist adds value.”

“As a strategist I am an outsider looking in on your business. I provide an objective, researched viewpoint and offer honest feedback. I look at the big picture and help women entrepreneurs break the cycle of doing the same business activities hoping for better results.”

“It’s important to start looking at your business from a strategy perspective. I offer a free business strategy diagnostic on my website to help women in business get started on their strategy.”

“Women entrepreneurs who have a business strategy create a bottom-line impact more quickly because they focus their efforts on achieving success in their businesses. So get chic and learn more about the power of business strategy - plus sign up for my exclusive blog on my website!”

His hands carefully hold the crystal glass, taking a sip. He swishes the glass in a small circle and smiles as the ice clinks the side of the

glass. His name is Blake. He is two years old, and he loves a good glass of water, while his twin brother Dierks reaches out to help.

Blake and Dierks are the two-year-old twins of Chad and Paige Sveinbjornson, owners of Emerald Water & Ice in Regina. This family is the essence of living well.

Chad steadies the crystal glass as Blake slurps the water. Dierks climbs back on Paige’s knee for a drink. “They love water. It’s a treat to have a glass of water,” Paige says. We don’t drink juice or pop. When we are thirsty, we drink our water.”

Emerald Water & Ice is a Regina-based business that provides bottled water, gourmet ice, water purification and water filtration systems. They are passionate about clear, clean water and doing their part to sustain the environment for their babies.

“Our mission statement is to provide mankind with a healthier, less expensive and more responsibly priced water purification and water filtration systems that do not damage the environment and waste our natural resources.”

“All of our systems are designed and built right here in Regina.  Our retail division presently employs four full time logistic specialists, two sales representatives and two full time installers who are fully trained to provide onsite service for our own systems as well as other systems and products,” explains Chad, Operations Manager, as the twins run off to explore the cafe.

“We service our own systems as well as other company’s systems and offer 24-hour pick up at our office. We travel across Southern Saskatchewan, so we offer distribution of dry and frozen goods.”

Emerald Water & Ice opened in 2009. They have been in the water purification industry for the past 16 years with a combined experience of over 30 years in the water industry.

“We can custom design and engineer the most advanced water purification systems for towns, villages, farms, acreages and home and business use,” says Chad.

“The best water is clean water. That’s water you can’t see or taste. Our water is smooth, clean and clear with no taste or after taste.”

“We are passionate about quality and providing a great product, something we would give to our family.”

“People see the connection between living well and good water”, says Paige. “Drinking clean clear water contributes to a healthier body and mind. Our clients want the best water for themselves and their families. We tailor our products to meet their needs, both in terms of the water type, packaging and systems. We are also proud to bring our brand new line of HIGH PH Re-mineralized water, an industry first.”

“People know they should drink good water, but get too busy. I find that bottles are a great way to get the water a person needs in a day. We offer bottled water in three and five-gallon sizes, four litre bottles, and single serve bottles. We also personalize single serve water bottles for companies and fundraisers.”

“As a mother, I think about how many times we give our children juices rather than just water, or how many carbonated drinks and the associated calories we consume on any given day. Clean water is the best possible thing you can give yourself and your children to drink. It energizes the body and contributes to a lifetime of good health.”

The woman knows what she wants and knows how to get it. She is self-assured, mature and makes no apologies. She is Dean Renwick’s muse, and she is about to walk the runway of her life.

Dean Renwick is known as a custom designer and creator of couture fashion that is impeccably structured and dramatic.

To wear a Renwick is to wear art, inspired by the intricacy of couture, impeccably structured for her. His pieces are statement making and attention getting. Wearers of Dean Renwick designs stand out because his pieces are created as accompaniments to the women who wear them.

From his Regina downtown studio and boutique, where Dean Renwick creates custom designs, as well as creating and selling his new retail line, he says that over the past 30 years, thousands of Renwick originals have been seen in the workplace, fundraisers, fashion shows and places in between.

“My designs are about showing the beauty of the woman who wears them. She is the showstopper, and I am dressing her.”

Now he is setting his sights on high-end mainstream retail, launching a retail expansion strategy in November 2013. With the help of The Saskatchewan Arts Board, business consultant Crystal Spooner and design mastermind Catharine Bradbury, of Bradbury Branding & Design, he established the business foundation and the brand that would bring his vision to life, and onto the racks of high-end retail stores across Canada and into the United States.

Dean Renwick’s first retail location in Canada is Studio S Fashion House Inc., owned by Sonja Clifton-Remple, a well known film costume designer and makeup artist turned high-end fashion retailer in 2013.

“We share the same inspi-ration,” says Sonja. “Our customer is the woman who knows who she is and what she wants. When we dress her, it is her story that brings the clothes to life. Dean’s designs embody the message that women of confidence share,” says Sonja.

This place is Bodhi Tree Yoga, located in the heart of Cathedral and downtown Regina, founded and operated by Colin Hall and Sarah Garden.

“We began practicing yoga in 1999 as a way to be a better person. Yoga is about creating freedom that begins within, which can then be shared outwardly. When we began, yoga was not really mainstream, but we saw it as a way to help others by becoming better ourselves,” says Sarah.

“Since we opened our first studio 11 years ago, the interest in yoga has grown. It is now recognized for its therapeutic benefits for the body, mind, and spirit.”

“Businesses see yoga as a way to increase productivity and happiness in the workplace. Sports teams recognize the benefits of yoga in offsetting injury and improving focus. More people see yoga as a way to improve their health, happiness and longevity,” says Colin.

Bodhi Tree Yoga is inspired by this couple’s passion for health, happiness, and living with greater awareness. Their commitment to continuous learning is reflected in their community-based approach, the programs and classes they offer and the teachers.

“Being a learning based studio is very impor-tant to us. Our broad base of knowledge and skills makes yoga accessible to people of all levels and abilities – including people coming to yoga with injuries and illness.”

“Our Teacher Training Program is longer and more comprehensive than any other offered in the province. We immerse our students in philosophy, traditions, practices and physiol-ogy of yoga. To date, 70 teachers have gradu-ated; another 21 graduated this March. Many of our graduates are teaching at the Bodhi Tree, as well as in businesses, other studios and centres in the community,” says Colin.

Bodhi Tree Yoga also offers workshops with local and international teachers for anyone wanting to learn about the depth and diversity of yoga, strengthen their practice or increase their understanding.

Sarah is passionate about yoga therapy and

the science of yoga, offering Yoga for Backs as well as one-on-one yoga therapy sessions. She also has a special place in her heart for cancer survivors.

“My mom is a cancer survivor. Our Renew: Yoga for Cancer program is specially designed to support those living with cancer. It is a very close community. We share in each other’s journeys. Some of our most recent Teacher Training graduates are from the Renew Program.”

“Growing the yoga community is central to our vision,” explains Colin. “We want people to know that they do not have to look a certain way, be flexible, or wear certain clothes. For those who cannot afford classes, we offer free karma classes and look for opportunities to bring free yoga classes into the community as fundraisers. We ultimately want Regina to be a happier, more blissful place and we feel yoga can help.”

“Our philosophy is to provide a broad spectrum of experiences through our teach-ers who come from all walks of life. Our Cathedral location is well known in the community. We opened a second location downtown to bring yoga to the people who live and work there, by making it accessible, enjoyable and tailored to the needs of people working in fast-paced workplaces.”

“We offer a place to slow down, breath, and be aware of posture and mood. Some people come to practice for physical reasons; others come for therapeutic reasons. Some people come because they are interested in learning about the philosophies and traditions of yoga, and others come to find stillness and balance.

“We want to help people live the best lives pos-sible. Yoga is for every one of all ages and all walks of life. At Bodhi Tree, we try to create an environment where people can learn, heal and find balance in their lives.”

“Sarah and I are so happy to share our passion for yoga with the people of our beautiful city.”

Serenity (noun): The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled: “an oasis of serenity”. Convalescent (adjective): Recovering from an illness or operation.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse for more than 20 years, Sheri Kramer saw the need for a place where

people could recover after surgery. She took the entrepreneurial leap in February 2014, opening Serenity Convalescent Care, the first privately run convalescent care home of its kind in Saskatchewan.

“People being discharged from the hospital may be medically stable but not healed. We provide a home environment for people to recover.”

Serenity Convalescent Care is a five-bedroom, 2,400 square foot home located in Regina’s University Park. Each patient receives his or her own room, and the care of a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

The Serenity staff provides healthy meals, dressing changes, drain removal and wound

assessments, as well as transportation from the hospital to Serenity and to appointments during their stay.

“Patients can stay for as long as it takes for them to feel comfortable and confident to attend to their own needs. We are the perfect solution for in town and out of town patients.”

“Staying in a hotel, hiring a private nurse, transportation, food and loss of wages for the caregiver costs about $1,574 per day. We provide a home environment and professional nursing care for $375.00 plus GST per day.”

Serenity Convalescent Care is registered with IFinancial and Credit Medical to assist with costs. Blue Cross covers private duty nursing costs when ordered by a physician. Health spending accounts are another resource.

“I am a pioneer in this business. I needed everything to be done right. I couldn’t settle, because I have learned what happens when people’s care is cut short. People need a place to go to recover and be cared for. That’s what Serenity Convalescent Care is all about. My dream is to have a bay of Serenities where people come to heal.”

LIVING WELL IN SASKATCHEWAN

Shaleah Whitefish has met more doctors and more princesses than most children her age. In 2011, while in kindergarten, Shaleah was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a rare childhood cancer of the liver. One year later, thanks to Children’s Wish Foundation, her dream came true to visit Florida’s Disney World and meet Disney princesses such as Rapunzel and Belle.

“It was a celebration for Shaleah, for finishing her chemo and beating cancer,” says Shawna Whitefish, Shaleah’s mom. “It was amazing for our whole family.”

“It’s hard to put into words how incredible the Children’s Wish Foundation is to do something so big for families when they’re going through the hardest time in their lives,” says Shawna. “Wishes really do come true.”

“The Children’s Wish Foundation has been granting wishes since 1984. As we approached our 30-year milestone, we granted the 20,000th wish to a child living with a life-threatening illness,” says Gay Oldhaver, Director of the Saskatchewan Chapter.

“In Saskatchewan, we have granted approximately 900 wishes over the past 30 years. The response to the Children’s

Wish Foundation in Saskatchewan is climbing, as is the need. Over the past years, we have granted on average 50 wishes per year. There is no waiting list. As soon as the child is approved, the wish can be granted”.

Community involvement is the key to making wishes come true. We are looking forward to a fundraising golf tournament with Chris Getzlaf this May.
