Tuition fees, admissions essays and required reading lists... forget about them! Siesta Key University (SKU) is not your typical “school.” SKU is a “school of thought,” a new retailbusiness offering university-themed appareland gifts for all ages.

Known for beautiful white quartz beaches, psychedelic sunsets and a laid-back attitude, Siesta Key is an amazing place. In fact, popu-lar travel writer Dr. Beach named Siesta Key “America’s Best Beach,” for 2011. A small com-munity full of thinkers, dreamers and doers, Siesta Key is very much like a college campus. We like to think of all our local and visiting inhabitants as student body, united under one sun. SKU welcomes everyone and embraces all endeavors and aspirations. Together we unite for exciting experiences and good times!

Featured brands include Bella, Canvas, Anvil, Alternative and American Apparel, as well as organic and eco-conscience t-shirts. Not onlymaking green efforts, SKU gives a portion of its profi ts to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The featured line-up changes regularly as SKU issues fresh collections, called Classes. The fi rst of such featured lines is the Siesta Key Univer-sity: School of Music. What’s next? Perhaps your “major” will make the “class schedule.”

The Founders and StaffFounded by the Mettille family in 2010, SKU is the brain-child of mother and daughter duo JoEllen and Brooke. Dad, Craig, is also very much a part of the team. Having built several businesses from the ground up, the Mettille family knows what it takes to make a vision come to life. Recognizing the unique communityof Siesta Key visitors and inhabitants they thought, “What if Siesta Key had a university?”

Schools and universities offer attendees many experienes. Students discover new interests by joining clubs, meet all sorts of people, and engage in the most memorable of social events (we’re talking major good times). The Mettille’s realized Siesta Key wasn’t much different from a college campus. At least, it comes pretty close to one by these standards. So why not create an “institution” that collectively joins the com-munity together under the positive notion of “school spirit.”

Artistically directing SKU is Leigh Kosloski, a journalist and graphic designer. Leigh received a B.A. from Lehigh University in Journalism

before ultimately deciding to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she earned an AAS in Communications Design and a BFA in Graphic Design. Living in NYC, Leigh has worked in luxury advertis-ing and fashion journalism for quite a few big names, while also freelancing her artistry for the promotional materials of several musical talents. All artwork and promotional materials are her original illustrations and designs.

Also joining the staff as manager is Kathleen Rothen, a native of the Pittsburgh area. Occas-sionaly Kat’s son Fritz and daughter Kate can be found helping “students” at the campus store find the perfect style and fit.

Clockwise Founders: Craig, Brooke and JoEllen Mettille; Creative Director: Leigh Kosloski, Staff: Fritz Rothen, Manager: Kathleen Rothen

Our Products: The School Uniform You Want to Wear

SKU does not have textbooks, but we do offer merchandise that continually reflects the ever changing and expanding community of person-alities and interest groups in the Sarasota area and beyond. Regularly, with each “new term,” the founders of SKU work with local artists to produce unique items that aren’t your typicalbookstore fare. The aim of SKU is to regularly produce new collections of merchandise that reflect popular cultural trends, current events and cater to local and visiting crowd’s interests. Basically, we make cool stuff to represent vari-ous “schools of thought” for every age group.

What are your favorite activities and interests? Do you like good music? If so, you’ve come to the right place to hear many talented local artists. If you do enjoy getting your groove on, you might want to consider yourself a student of the “SKU School of Music.”

Or are you just here to have an awesome time? Declare yourself a member of our Greek system: Greek. Yep, that’s Sigma, Kappa, Upsilon. As you can tell, it is SKU’s aim to represent the many facets of an actual university, but infused with a whole new level of fun.

Whatever your age, size or interests, SKU has something for everyone. If you love Siesta Key, then why not declare yourself a member of the student body and sport some of the timeless yet unique gear. SKU uses brands you love and trust and scout out the best new offerings in casual apparel.

Featured brands include Bella, Canvas, Anvil, Authentic Pigments, New Era, Alternativeand American Apparel. SKU also offers several eco-conscience items made of recycled and/or organic materials.

The Offi cial Logo:SKU CrestThe Crest is the “offi cial insignia” of SKU. The logo is an adaptation of a classic collegiate crest. Initially, the composition projects the idea that it is emblem of signifi cance, or even judicial com-mand. A second inspection relays the concept’s true essence as a laid-back place of leisure.

The large “SKU” type sits atop the calm ocean, as the sun decends (or ascends) from the hori-zon. Incoporated into the concentric structure are several indentifying elements of type. The full name, short nickname and region have been balanced against imagery, while maintained a balance of white space that will allow for small printing scales.

Wear Your ColorsProudly!Purple is noble, passionate, mysterious and isoften associated with spirituality and creativity,as well as evocative of a peaceful state-of-mind. Countering a wise and passionate royal

purple is a golden shade of yellow. Like purple, yellow is associated with creative thinking in a very energetic sense. Some contend that yellow is the color of intellect. In any case, yellow is the color of the sun and Siesta Key sure does have a lot of sunshine!

Color theory dictates that purple and yellow are complementary colors, which ironically means they are complete opposites. Opposites really do attract in a sense that together these colors make for quite a fashionable combination. Together, purple and yellow represent our unique brand of school spirit.

Basic LogoThe SKU Basic Logo is a simplified logo, using a modified version of the slab serif Egyptiantypeface Aachen. This typeface is commonly used in scholastic logos.

This logo is often used in conjunction with more abstract artwork. It’s simplicity allows for a broad range of applications, using vari-ous production methods. It can be scaled to a variety of sizes while maintaining a sense of proper letter spacing and alignment.

Welcome to Campus

The SKU Team prides itself on paying atten-tion not only to their product, but also to the campus store. Designed as a concept boutique, the exterior has some intrigue with it’s bold purple and yellow walkway, but is more the most part unassumingly simple.

Once inside the store you are transported away from the common tiki and tropical aesthetics, to a place that is nostalgic as a classroom, but as elegant as the dean’s private library. No de-merits or homework are issued here. Instead, we cultivate the same good vibes you would

find at the best social gathers. It’s the place “students” go to kick back and have fun.

Many of the furnishings in SKU are antiques from architectural salvages from as far as Iowa. In every nook and cranny are curiousities and artifacts that lend to a library appeal. Vintage textbooks and new books line the shelves, along with interesting little knick nacks and original artwork produced by the SKU Art De-partment. Each carefully selected and placed to lend intrigue and really make the store a special place to visit.

SIESTA KEY CRYSTAL CLASSIC MASTER SANDSCULPTING COMPETITION

Siesta Key University participated in their first event as a sponsor of the Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sandsculpting Com-petition, held on Siesta Key Beach in Novem-ber 2010. Not only was this SKU’s first event as a sponsor, but also the very first time SKU goods were officially offered for sale to the public, as the campus store had yet to open.

The event, benefiting the Mote Marine Labo-ratory, was a huge success. Master sculptors from across the country created beautiful materpieces. Thousands of people poured onto the beach that weekend, many of which went home with some awesome new Siesta Key University threads!

CHRISTMAS 2010:GRAND OPENING

Siest Key University’s Campus store official-ly opened for business December 15, 2010. Just in time for last minute holiday shop-pers, the village was treated to an awesome window display complete with a purple and gold Christmas tree, surrounded by glitter-ing piles of presents.

SKU also delighted village go-ers in helping decorate the town. SKU covered a tall palm tree with hundreds of purple and gold lights.Strung from the bottom to top of the very

tall tree, the lights made for quite a beautiful spectacle. Long after the holidays, this tree remains a staple for tourists seeking photo-ops in Siesta Key Village.

Many vistors and locals found perfectly unique gifts for their love ones. Sweatshirts were particularly popular, as many northern-ers would have to leave Siesta Key’s paradise weather for blizzards and icy temperatures up north.

MACFEST: Music FestivalMay 14, 2011

Daytime showers didn’t dampen spirits at the first ever MacFest, held in downton Bra-denton, Florida. SKU was a major sponsor of the event, hosted by local musician Michael Mac. The SKU faculty took their awesome, music inspired, yellow hippie bus on the road for the event. It proved to be a great idea, as friends and family climbed inside during the heaviest of the rain showers.

Once the rain stopped, the crowd was back on their feet enjoying some of the best bands around. Featured guests included many All-man Brothers Band associates and local tal-ents such as Dana Lawrence’s Kettle of Fish, Ben Hammond and the very energetic Tony Tyler Band. The fun went well into the night and was truly a memorable time for all.

Featured brands include Bella, Canvas, Anvil, Alternative and American Apparel, as well as organic and eco-conscience t-shirts.
