Skibbereen Arts FestivalFéile Ealaíne

July 18 - July 30 2011www.skibbereenartsfestival.com

Hello and welcometo the third Skibbereen Arts Festival!!!For many years West Cork has been a haven for artistic talent and is recognised as being one of Europe’s cultural hotspots. Skibbereen once again pays homage this year to this vibrant fabric of our community that is the arts. In times like these, people need and appreciate the facets of the arts more than ever.

Following on the success of our second festival last year, we have again managed to attract some very exciting events for Skibbereen this year. As well as the many world-class artists and events coming to town, there will also be many cultural and sporting events taking place and a very special Skibbereen Children’s Festival. There is something for everyone in this year’s festival no matter what your taste may be.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who’ve helped in any way in the organising of this year’s event, to our sponsors and funders without whom this simply couldn’t happen and to the people and businesses of Skibbereen for their continued support.

A special word of thanks to Reverend Bruce Hayes and the select vestry of Abbeystrewry Church for allowing us to use their beautiful venue for select events.

FORMATIONSSAIDHBHÍN GIBSON

Formations is the result of a residency taken last year in the Working Artist Studios in Skibbereen. The exhibition is an aggregate of art-objects and drawings representing a period of time in a specifi c location, while the works also make visible the activity within the surrounds of Skibbereen. The inter-connectedness between the works is gradually revealed to the viewer as they spend time in the exhibition space.

Saidhbhín works from her immediate surroundings, questioning its balance and identity. She examines the history, people, fl ora and fauna to see how these elements characterise and inform a place. This research defi nes the direction of the work, resulting in layered and contrasting collages of ideas.

11am – 5pm daily.

MIND GARDENS AGATA KLUZNIAK& TOMASZ MADAJCZAK

Mind Gardens combines different media: drawing, photography and ephemeral installation. It explores aspects of the relationship between the person and the landscape, between the mind and its tendency to annex comfortable zones; of the ambiguity of facing different stages of change.

The installation embodies a stream of consciousness which relates to one’s private life experience, in response to the idea of the Japanese Zen garden. The forms of the landscape and the forms of the personal inner world mirror each other. Constant work might infl uence a change of the boundaries, a shifting of the comfort zone.

The Library exists as a series of custom made hollowed-out hard back books, each containing an mp3 player, a programme, and a set of foldable headphones. Together these books travel around, appearing at galleries, festivals, theatres and found spaces. Simply pick up a book and immediately fi nd yourself immersed in a world of beguiling audio encounters. The Library contains twelve original pieces, ranging from sonic art to storytelling, and rich sound-collages to instruction-based experiences, and features work by Blast Theory, Duncan Speakman, Unlimited Theatre, and a host of other fantastic artists.

SOUND INSTALLATION

Sonophore is a site-specifi c interactive sound installation developed in 2011 by Signal to Noise. As visitors enter the installation space, they are invited to use a custom interface to interact with hundreds of strips of unspooled audio cassette tape. This tape is attached to the walls of the space, and laterally spans its interior. It surrounds the participant and audience, following the space’s physical contours, which act as a structure on which the tape can be both displayed and interacted with. The project title Sonophore can be translated from Latin as ‘sound-carrier’, with the work intending to explore magnetic tape’s capacity to hold and transmit sonic information. The format of magnetic tape has a physical capacity to capture the ephemeral and transitory nature of sound. As part of this piece, this medium is mapped directly onto the physical structure of a space, connecting the sound content of tape with the building itself.

SOUND INSTALLATION

An installation by acclaimed British fi lmmaker Chris Petit and novelist/director Iain Sinclair, with a haunting soundtrack by West Cork-based composer Susan Stenger. Photographed by Robert Petit and featuring Rebecca Marshall.

Marine Court Rendezvous is made up of a series of documentary-fi ctions shot inside and around Marine Court, St Leonard’s on Sea – a 1930s crumbling modernist building on England’s south coast built in the style of a Cunard luxury liner. Originally exhibited at London’s Sketch gallery as a 12-channel video installation, MCR creates a cinematic half-world of intertwined narratives, combining new footage with fragmented scenes, exiled characters and disembodied voices from sources as diverse as Niagara,Tarnished Angels, and Ship Of Fools. Transplanted to the architecture of Skibbereen’s North Street and presented as a grid of surveillance-camera images rather than on 12 separate screens, it echoes Marine Court’s array of windows while peering voyeuristically inward and gazing wistfully outward.

LIVE SOUND PERFORMANCE WITH

THE QUIET CLUBThe Quiet Club are Mick O’Shea and Danny McCarthy. Formed in 2006, they have become recognised as one of Ireland’s leading sound art improvisation groups. They frequently play together with guests, which in the past have included Rhodri Davies, Stephen Vitiello, Mark Wastell, Viv Corringham, John Godfrey, Harry Moore, Iarla Ó Lionáird, David Toop, and many others.

Their fi rst CD Tesla was released on Farpoint Recordings (www.farpointrecording.com) in 2009 and a new release is planned for 2011. Most recently a track of their’s appeared on ‘WIRETAPPER 23’ the compilation that accompanies ‘WIRE’ magazine. A major exhibition ‘Strange Attractor’ featuring their work took place in the Crawford Gallery Cork in April 2011.

“The brilliance of the Quiet Club, the Cork-based ‘entity’ of Danny McCarthy and Mick O’Shea, is best apprehended live. Their CD, Tesla, is fascinating and enjoyable, but all the more so after watching their performance at the Goethe Institute in Dublin” Seán Ó Máille, Journal of Music Vol. 1 No. 2 - June/July 2009

DUBLINGUITAR QUARTETThe Dublin Guitar Quartet are Ireland’s leading guitar ensemble: entertaining, and inspiring; they are entirely unique in their fi eld and have been impressing audiences with their original arrangements of modern masterpieces by popular composers such as Philip Glass, Arvo Part and Steve Reich .

In April 2010, Dublin Guitar Quartet performed the entire set of Philip Glass’ quartets at St. Ann’s church in Dublin, and have also been successful in bringing new music to unlikely audiences, having played as guests of rock groups such as The Redneck Manifesto (Dublin) and Final Fantasy (Canada).

AN EVENING WITH

PAUL DURCANHaving continuously sold out performances around the globe, Skibbereen is delighted to host a special reading by one of Ireland’s most distinctive, contemporary poets.

In the words of Caitriona O’Reilly in the Guardian “anyone who has attended one of Paul Durcan’s electrifying poetry readings and been reduced to hysteria (a common enough occurrence) can testify to the unique fl avour of his work…’

Durcan has spent the last four decades taking contemporary Irish life to task. His voice is still radical and intense, displaying those combined characteristics of conscience, humour, iconoclasm and lyricism which account for his continued popularity both inside and outside Ireland.

Paul Durcan was born in Dublin in 1944 and educated at University College, Cork where he studied archaeology and medieval history. His fi rst book Endsville (with Brian Lynch) appeared in 1967 and in 1974 he won the Patrick Kavanagh Award. This has been followed by 19 other collections, including O Westport in the Light of Asia Minor in 1975, The Berlin Wall Café, Daddy, Daddy (Winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award, 1990). His recent collections include The Art of Life (2004), The Laughter of Mothers (2008) and Life is a Dream: Forty Years Reading Poems (2009).

“One of modern Ireland’s most distinctive poets, Paul Durcan is renowned as both an outspoken critic of his native country, and as a chronicler of its emergence from the repressions of the 1950s to the contradictions of the present day.” Dr. Eve PattenS

In the span of a century, entire countries rise and fall, cultures evolve, fashions transform. Yet some have endured. One such icon, Ireland’s oldest Céilí Band, was born over a century ago in the tiny village of Kilfenora in Co. Clare. The ten-piece band features three fi ddles (Anne Rynne, Pat Lynch and Annemarie McCormack), two fl utes (Anthony Quigney and Garry Shannon), two sqeezeboxes Tim Collins and his wife, Claire Griffi n), banjo and leader (John Lynch), drums (Sean Griffi n) and piano (Fintan McMahon).

Whatever the future holds, the object of the present band is to continue in the style of their predecessors. By staying true to traditional instrumentation and repertoire and applying some judicious innovation, they are determined to cement their tradition and secure the future and while so doing reach yet another generation of audiences.

NOLLAIG CASEY AND ARTY MCGLYNNNollaig Casey and Arty McGlynn are two of Ireland’s most gifted musicians. Nollaig has an international reputation as a leading exponent of Irish traditional music on the fi ddle. She joined the legendary band Planxty in 1980 and toured with them in Ireland, UK and Europe. In recent years Nollaig has recorded and toured with a variety of groups and musicians including, Moving Hearts, Liam O’Flynn, Mary Black and Elvis Costello. Arty is without doubt the fi nest and most sought after guitar player in Ireland with a unique understanding of music he performs. He played as a member of such prestigious groups as Planxty, Patrick Street, De Danann and The Van Morrison Band and with Christy Moore, Paul Brady and Liam O’Flynn.

30 Canon James Goodman, Pastor, Preacher, Poet and Professor, church builder and collector of Irish music was a true Irish Renaissance man but it’s the vast collection of tunes that he transcribed from Thomas Kennedy which he will be most remembered for. At age 30 he learned to play the uileann pipes and commenced his great collection of Irish music, contained in 4 volumes and now housed in the library of Trinity College in Dublin. In all, Goodman’s collection contains over 2,300 airs and dance tunes. In 1867 he became Rector of Skibbereen where he would often sit in front of the Rectory and play his pipes for anyone who would care to listen. His knowledge of Irish was widely recognised and in 1879 he was appointed Professor of Irish in Trinity College where his students included Douglas Hyde and J.M. Synge.

DERMOT BYRNE AND FLORIANE BLANCKEDuets are the classic combination in traditional music, and there is something magical and enthralling about Dermot Byrne and Floriane Blancke, a delicious combination of Irish accordion and French harp. Dermot’s astonishing box-playing takes it cue from the Donegal tradition, yet moves effortlessly beyond, as he brings his spell-binding virtuosity in to play as he explores other musical styles. Floriane’s playing is full with grace and light, and her classical background and training shows in the great sensitivity and dexterity with which she adapts to the the Irish repertoire. Together, they shimmer and sparkle, and provide the warp and weft for some beautiful musical weavings, and balm for the musical soul.

The beautiful and atmospheric Abbeystrewry Church grounds will again this year play host to our outdoor screening.

This year the Outdoor Screening will have a special local resonance when Skibbereen native Gerard Hurley will present his new fi lm ‘The Pier’. Fresh from its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh this new Irish feature was shot around Schull and Goleen last Summer.

The fi lm focuses on Jack McCarthy who left Ireland for America 20 years ago. His business had failed and he had to get out in a hurry. Now he is called home by his father Larry, who says he’s dying.

Finding his father fi t enough to hit golf balls in a fi eld of cattle, Jack is furious, but decides to stay in Cork. He meets an American tourist, Grace, who is quick to tell him she’s just out of a divorce and not ready for a another relationship. Jack tries to call in debts from local people who owe his father money, but their time together becomes more and more unbearable until Larry is fi nally honest with his son.

Peadar Ó’Riada formed the Cór Bean Cúil Aodha choir in 1985 as he felt that the female creative energy was not getting its fair share of attention while the men’s Cór Chúil Aodha held sway on stage at home and abroad! The choir is comprised of over 20 members, coming from Coolea, Ballyvourney and the wider Múscraí area.

The choir tonight will perform Laoi na Laoithe whose content is taken whole from the Song of Solomon or the Song of Songs. While there is a story in the text itself, it is mainly a series of accounts, attitudes and emotions about its main theme – love. Laoi na Laoithe was translated by Pádraig Ó Fiannachta and is 55 minutes in length.

36 Film screening with live soundtrack

Skibbereen Town Hall | 8.30pm | €10

Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to welcome 3epkano’s Matthew Nolan and Cameron Doyle (electric guitar, omnichord, lap steel) and Si Schroeder’s Bryan O’Connell (drums/percussion) to the Town Hall where they will perform their live soundtrack to the wonderful fi lm Pour la Suite du Monde.

In 1962, legendary cinéma vérité fi lmmakers Pierre Perrault and Michel Brault were attracted to Île-aux-Coudres for two reasons: the language of the people who lived on this small island in the St. Lawrence and the whale. For centuries the fi shermen of Île-aux-Coudres had caught belugas. The souls of the dead were invoked for a successful catch, and a unique technique was used: the men sank a trap of saplings into offshore mud at low tide to capture the white whale, a tradition that was abandoned in 1920. This feature-length fi lm is the unrehearsed story of what happened when old-timers of the island were persuaded to revive the practice. And through the magic of words and the mystery of the catch, the fi lm uncovers a spirituality rooted in the moon and the rhythm of the tides. Pour la Suite du Monde is more than a documentary; it is a fresco of the myths and legends among the traditional fi shing communities of Quebec.

THE RED BALLOON

The award-winning and critically acclaimed fanasy short fi lm directed by Albert Lamorisse follows the relationship between a little boy and a red balloon with a mind of its own that he befriends on the Parisian streets. Widely recognised as one of the most important fi lms in children’s cinema, this 1956 classic is the only dialogue-free fi lm to win an Oscar for Best Screenplay.

Albert Lamorisse is “…a remarkable artist: one of cinema’s best poets and a fearless explorer of the scary and exhilirating outbacks of the imagination.”The New York Times

GAA ARCHIVE SCREENING

Skibbereen Town Hall | 8.30pm | €8

The late ‘80s and ‘90s proved to be a golden era for West Cork football. In good times and bad, quality football has been a constant and life-long bonds are made and kept from lining out together for club and school. Following on from last year’s very successful archive screening night, this year we are concentrating on two classic football matches associated with Skibbereen.

First up is O’Donovan Rossas 1985 Intermediate County Final when Skibbereen beat Glanmire on a score of 3-11 to 0-8. This team, captained by Tim Healy, provided the nucleus of the team that went on to win the County Senior Football Championship in 1992 and subsequently the All-Ireland Club Championship in March 1993.

Anton Chekhov described his early comedies Marriage Proposal and The Brute as one act jokes. These short three handers are often played together and have at their farcical heart, disputes common to rural neighbours everywhere, about land, money and petty jealousy, which never fail to strike a chord.

Set in Anytown, Ireland, the play tells the story of 43-year old Rhonda Russell. One day, her husband rings to say he is leaving her, after almost 20 years of marriage. In the events that unfold in the quiet suburban neighbourhood, some comic, some tragic, friends and strangers are drawn together, and relationships are torn apart. In this Irish premiere, Robert Hewett’s play provides eye-opening insights into a world where relationships are not always what they seem.

Colin has played sell out shows throughout Ireland and at the biggest and best comedy festivals around the world including Edinburgh, Melbourne, Montreal, and of course Kilkenny Cat Laughs.

He has been an almost permanent fi xture on Irish television for the last decade. From a long list of credits his highlights have included the fi ve years he was the writer and presenter of, the highly regarded and critically acclaimed, Blizzard of Odd followed by a six year stint on the hugely successful The Panel for RTÉ. On the BBC he is back as a regular panellist on topical news show The Blame Game and his own Great Unanswered Questions, which airs on television, BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Radio 4.

“He is distinguishably good.. His delivery is immaculate, ultra-fast but never unintelligible. More infectiously, he has a knack of making each member of the audience feel like a friend, delivering pin-sharp observations in the form of shared confi dences.” Dave Simpson, the Guardian

Three... Two... One... Tomahawks are go!!!T.V. Jones and The Tomahawks play a wild, red hot brand of rockabilly. Their high octane sets contain some golden classics, mixed with some of the more hopped-up modern gems, with a few rockin’ originals thrown in for good measure. This is 100% Rockabilly that does exactly what it says on the tin!!!

Since turning the key in the ignition in 2008, the mean machine known as TV Jones and The Tomahawks has been speeding round the land in furious pursuit of the ultimate live experience. Left over from the ashes of Kilkenny roots rockers, The Migrant Hawkers, Noxy (upright bass) and Pius (downright drums) set about creating their ultimate rockabilly group – the group that they themselves would like to go see. Wanting to step up a gear from the classic, old school, hill-scented rockabilly sound they had plied in their previous combo – they hooked up with Jimi (voice & rhythm) and Tony (screamin’ leads), and the Tomahawks were born.

Arming themselves with some menacing original tunes, they set about souping up some classics and putting their own stamp on some of the fi nest modern stompers, creating a hell of a live mix, where adrenaline is king and the seismic rhythm is hopelessly infectious!!!

SI SCHROEDER AND SCULLION

DOUBLE BILLAT ABBEYSTREWRY CHURCH WITH

SCULLIONSome bands are destined to stay together, the songs a powerful cohesive in the intertwined lives of their performers. Scullion is such a band. Three decades on from their formative gigs together, Scullion’s signature sound is as strong as ever. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably fi lled the role of founding member Greg Boland.

They’ve remained loyal to the band’s original vision and its recasting of folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour. It’s a recipe that yielded four seminal albums and an impressive catalogue of songwriting landmarks like Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist, that still form the backbone of their set today.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see this great Irish band whose live performances are becoming legendary.

Conor Horgan began his career as a photographer, then directed over 70 TV commercials and pop videos before moving on to write and direct drama and documentary fi lms. His debut feature fi lm One Hundred Mornings received its US premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, was released across Ireland during May 2011, and was described as “one of the very best Irish feature fi lms of the last decade” by the Irish Times. At this year’s Skibbereen Arts Festival, we are screening two of his documentary fi lms: The Beholder on three Irish portrait painters and About Beauty, a documentary on the sea-based works of conceptual artist Dorothy Cross. Conor will present an intimate workshop where he will share his experiences as a director working with drama and documentary fi lm. The workshop is recommended for aspiring fi lmmakers and artists and those seeking a greater understanding of the fi lmmaking process. The participants will be encouraged to join in a Q&A throughout the session.

Arty McGlynn is probably the most infl uential guitarist in traditional Irish music. A native of Omagh in County Tyrone, he started out playing in the Showband era of the ‘60s but by the mid ‘70s he began to focus his attention on the very different world of traditional Irish music. In 1979 he released his fi rst solo album, McGlynn’s Fancy, the fi rst ever recording in which the guitar is played in an authentic traditional style. He has played and recorded with numerous Irish artists including Christy Moore, Van Morrison, Paul Brady, Patrick Street and Planxty, and has produced many of the best albums of the last 30 years. This workshop offers you the chance to learn from a real life living legend!

Michael Coady was born in 1939 in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, where he has worked as a teacher, musician and writer. Winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry in 1979 and also of Listowel Writers’ Week and RTÉ Francis McManus short story awards, he has published fi ve collections with The Gallery Press: Two for a Woman, Three for a Man (1980), Oven Lane (1987), All Souls (1997), One Another (2003) and Going by Water (2009).

Michael Coady’s work is noted for its celebration of place, particularly his home town and the people who live there. It has also been praised for its compassion. As Patrick Cotter wrote of him : “The celebration by Coady of the small intimate community mirrors the role of the bard in Gaelic Ireland, where the work of a poet was very much a public, community concern”. Coady’s most recent books have integrated and orchestrated poetry, prose and his own photographs.

POETRY READINGWITH MICHAEL COADY“It is remembrance /that allows us / little by little / to forget.”

Michael will present a three hour intimate workshop for ten writers (of poetry or short fi ction). Each participant should bring a sample of their work which will be presented and discussed during the workshop. Participants do not need to have work already published so beginners are encouraged. Places limited to 10.

Places are limited for all of the above events so booking is essential. Contact the Box Offi ce for booking information.
