Kris’ Kolumn
During this past year, YOUR SKI & BOARD CLUB has been
monumental in many ways, but mostly in terms of contributions by
Board Members, New Members, and several Older Members.
We’ve seen quite a number of Members at parties and wine
tastings… and at the legendary 1st Wednesday General Meeting at
Ecco’s Pizza.
Craig Gibson, tasked with hats of Competition VP and Membership Chair, has become a huge
magnet in getting people to race and to simply gather in Mammoth! Whether it’s fishing
(with Ziba!), at his condo, or just his enthusiasm, ya gotta wanna be there!!! One day, we’ll
all hear him play…. ‘Craig would like to remind us that Membership is at a 3-year high!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!’
Sarah brought with her some tried and true experience from other, more developed,
organizations. Both her perspectives and her punctual writing have set her apart, and we
like how close this makes us all feel!
Shep and his side-kick, Tara, get the trips done. Maybe because they’ve been to so many ski
hills or know so many people who have skied and still ski, or maybe just ‘cuz they’re great to
hang with’.
Roberto, has kept the Club Condo filled and entertained us with his mastery of cuisines and
wines. He also has been informing us on what’s happening here, at Mammoth during ski
season and during summer time.
Lance Liebl, the go to guy for social events, has surprised us with more fun and interesting
wine tasting caverns than you can shake a – well, just don’t shake the wine! Our Annual
Open House is held at his yacht club, an excellent wide-open view of one of Long Beach’s
Page 2

many marinas, and he continues to find great venues to enjoy Dinner-Dances. This year’s
dance is at Malarkey’s – on Alamitos Bay!
Ziba stepped in as Treasurer - after Cherri left a pair of big shoes to fill. It’s great having her
talents and perspectives! (Are all treasurers so strong-willed?)
Ah, Ying, my dearest, shifted from Newsletter Editor to Flyer Creator and Web Mistress
during the year. (Yours truly picked up duties for getting our ski rag together).
Ken Gregg has been a stalwart of fun, wisdom, and participation for longer than I have been
on the Board. Contributing his humor, writing skills, and faith in me over the last few years,
Ken has been invaluable - and a lot of fun!
Cynthia, a former LBSC Member from a few blue moons back, has gracefully (and gratefully!)
assumed the reigns of newsletter editor. She knows her stuff (as this issue illustrates!).
Can’t wait to hear her tales…..
This year, we’ve gone to Mammoth for each and every race weekend, utilizing the Club
Condo. We’ve actually scored well, despite a few broken bones (eh, Lori?). Some have had a
good run of firsts (right, Brian?), and some have coached us well (yes, Steve?).
All year long, we’ve found a few new tables for sharing whites and reds, some with fire or
live music. To share our passions for life, we’ve worked on our themes for parties…. Some
great corned beef & cabbage, and good ol’ Irish whiskey was left by a couple of leprechauns
at the St. Patty’s Day Party. Some elves brought a few special treats to the Christmas Party,
including a loaf of authentic brandy-soaked fruit cake. Who knows what might appear at our
GO GO HAWAIIAN Dinner-Dance!?!
I know that you will reconsider and find that your Long Beach Ski Club is most worthy of your
membership investment, just $40 for a single and $56 for a couple. Better still … shake a leg
(cut the carpet?) with us at our Annual Dinner-Dance, May 16th. Lastly, Members, please
remember to vote for your favorite Board Members
With kindest regards, and dreams of slopes of that white fluffy stuff,
Kris
P.S. Don’t forget that we still have a host full of summer parties and other fun!!

APRIL 2015 LBSC Ski Club Week Trip Report By Bob & Tara Shepard
The Telluride Potluck Photo Party last Saturday was well attended with
everyone bringing some excellent food for the appetizers and the dinner
table, along with two delicious desserts! And with two large bottles of
red wine Kris Flaig was nice enough to bring back from the Telluride week trip so
that everyone could enjoy at the Photo Party.
Mike Bilinski’s DVD of the Telluride week events in both Video & Photos
were enjoyed by everyone. Thanks again to Mike Bilinski for editing and
creating a wonderful DVD!

We are still working on getting prices for 2016 Week Ski Trip. The two ski
resorts we are checking out are Big Sky Montana and Aspen Colorado.
So far, Aspen Ski Resort prices are looking better then Big Sky resort. Also, the LA Ski
Council’s Week trip for 2016 may be Banff Ski Resort as their destination Resort.
Page 8
Ski Breeze May 2015 Volume 76, Issue 12
We hope to have all of the final trip cost finished in May. Currently, Aspen Resort is ahead by only 4 votes, so it may all depend on the final trip cost as to where we’ll all be going in 2016. If you still have not emailed your pick for the 2016 Week Ski Trip, please email your pick today to Shep at: [email protected] Pizza time soon, hope to see you all at the May 6th LBSC General Meeting! Ziba’s Gold By Ziba Gibson
Ziba is very busy these days, fighting tax wars for her clients and winning most of them!! However, I also hear she may be secretly researching bait for her next fishing outing with her hubby Craig. And you know why?? 'cuz she wants to catch more than he does (like always…)
Ziba’s late addition: Have you ever heard of the term “Fishmas”? In case you haven’t, it is a term used to describe opening day for fishing in the Sierras which is always the last Saturday in April. If I had my way this day would be a national holiday. This year Fishmas is especially spectacular because we can access the high country lakes that are free of ice. Even though the road through Tioga Pass into Yosemite is still closed, it is still possible to drive to the park boundary, park and hike to those fishin’ holes that have the BIG ONES (i.e. lunkers). Would you like to know how to catch the lunkers? Come to the Dinner Dance. We’ll talk…

Who remembers Allen Wolfe?
The Allen Wolfe Spirit of the Grand Prix Award is an annual award given in memory of a long-time Long Beach Ski Club member. Some of the old timers will remember Allen who was a sports writer for the Long Beach Press Telegram where he worked since the age of 17 for 33 years. He was an avid snow skier and enthusiastic club member. Recently there were two articles in the sports section of the Press Telegram about Allen.
Wolfe covered the Grand Prix for 23 years, where he became known as the “Grand Master of the Grand Prix”, developing an encyclopedic knowledge of auto racing which he shared with readers and anyone else wanting to know about racing in Long Beach. He was known as “a giant in his field,” When race time rolled around, Allen got so excited about reporting on the race that his coworkers called it “Allen Wolfe time.” Sadly, one week before the 1999 race, Allen died at 51 years of age. Wolfe had a rocky start in life when he & a twin brother were born June 17, 1947 in Honolulu. His brother died two days after birth. Wolfe weighed 4.5 lbs & spent his first month in an incubator. Later he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, but he never complained and it never slowed him down. He was an avid golfer & skier. He attended LBSC & CSULB and earned a journalism degree in 1970. To honor Allen, the Press Telegram created the Allen Wolfe Spirit of the Grand Prix Award to recognize the exceptional service of a person each year for what is now called the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The 2014 winner was Kathy Telaneus, who has spent 40 years working in the pressroom. While Allen was quiet and may have been embarrassed by an award in his name, he would have been proud of the spirit of the recipient and the Long Beach Ski Club is proud to remember Allen Wolfe. Cheers! Sarah

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl
On April 18, we had over 20 members attend the wine tasting at the Red Barrel.
Many of the members tried the
offered wine tasting by choosing 4
wine selections of two red and
two white wines. It apparently
became popular. Accommodations
were like sitting in your family or
living room and the appetizers
were great!

As you know, our Annual Dinner-Dance will be at Malarkey's, located off Marina
Drive next to Koury's restaurant. We have a private room facing Alamitos Bay.
Malarkey's has a live band playing 60s, 70s, 80s, Rock and Roll music in the main room
of the restaurant. So wear your dancing shoes!!
Please remember to bring two checks which can be written out the night of the
dinner. One check is for renewing membership and second check is for the dinner.
Page 15

Please RSVP to Lance Liebl and make sure you select either chicken or salmon. Read
the flyer for details. Also, remember the theme is Hawaiian. Women can wear
coconuts for bras if they want to….hint, hint!#$%#
Looking forward to seeing all those coconuts at the Dinner Dance. Men cannot show
up wearing swimming briefs….. STRONG hint!!#@%U*&%!!
We will be sending out flyers for June and July soon. In June, a barbecue will be held
at the Gibson's new, well relatively new…home in Seal Beach. In July, Barbie Spatz
will be hosting a pool party at her beautiful home in Long Beach!
See you all there!

Craig’s Crag … Racing & Membership
By Craig Gibson
In addition to affiliating with 25 other ski clubs to form the Los Angeles Council of Ski
Clubs, the Long Beach Ski Club also affiliates with more than 150 clubs to form the
Far West Ski Association. The Far West Ski Association (FWSA) encompasses a lot of
territory including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada,
Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Every spring FWSA hosts a weekend of ski racing; and, for the past two years, we
have been lucky to have these races in our own backyard- Mammoth. Rather than
representing a club, in the FWSA Championships, each racer represents a league,
which in our case is ULLR. Of the eight leagues participating, ULLR came in third
place. Posted below are the results for our Long Beach racers. Congratulations to
Brian Mahoney who has been bumped to S6 Vet Men!

KEN’S KOMMENTS By Ken Gregg Even though Mammoth received a late “dusting” this week, I have to believe that even the most diehard of our ski club have called it quits for the 2014-2015 season. It was not the best of years, but it was also not the worst. And I am already hearing from Australia that they are predicting there will be another El Nino this coming year. Please join me in praying to the Snow Gods for a great snow season next year! 1. Physical conditioning – even though you may be able to see the end of the season, please plan on keeping your workout routine going to help being in shape
for any last minute ski trips. And besides it is never too late to start thinking about
fitting into that bathing suit for the coming summer.
2. Equipment – once you have decided to hang it up for the season here a couple of reminders for your equipment:
a. Skis – have a heavy coat of wax applied to the bases and don’t scrape it off until
early next season. This will help protect the bases & edges.
b. Boots – ensure that they are well aired out and then stored where they will not
be exposed to huge temperature changes.
c. Clothing – wash all, including jackets & pants, making sure to follow the specific
instructions for each garment. Then store as if you are getting ready to take your
next trip this coming weekend. Check all zippers & straps to insure that they are not broken or torn; if so, have repaired now while it is on your mind.
d. Hydration bags – this is a good time to clean them out and thoroughly dry.
Especially, if you are not planning on using it until next season.
e. Goggles – check to insure that your lenses are in good condition and then store
them with a light rag wrapped around them to prevent scratches in storage.
3. Participation – Please plan on attending our next monthly General Membership
Meeting, which is planned for the 1st Wednesday of April, on the 1st, for some free pizza @ Ecco’s Pizza and discussions on how the season has gone. Please also see the
details for the club’s upcoming Annual Dinner-Dance, elsewhere in this newsletter, and please plan to attend.
